Being Persuasive

I recently started a job in the public relations industry. Part of my job is to call news outlets and pitch stories to them about my clients. However, after two unsuccessful days in getting media placements, I am curious what advice others have to give about persuading someone to become interested in a topic in only a couple of sentences.
I know that practice makes perfect and that eventually I will "catch the hang of it," but I think looking outside the PR world for advice can be of benefit.
How has a telemarketer peaked your interest? What "catches your eye"? What intrigues you?
I would love to hear your examples!

You can tell about achievements made by certain clients of yours. You can also tell about happy experiences of your clients.
You can tell about sufferings of your clients.

Who are your clients? What is the nature of your industry - hotel, hospital, telecom?

Well, I say, just to tell you my opinion, and I tell you that I know virtually nothing inherently to sales techniques.
As a boy, I tried to do that here in Italy is called "door to door", but I've never been successful. I'm talking about fifteen years ago.
I soon realized that I did not possess the makings of a seller!
For this, I am sorry but I am also opposed to a sales job. Basically, I'm not good!

Success stories would certainly catch the attention of a listener for that matter.
