Well, mylotters, some would say they are the same, while others will disagree. Of course for me they are related but cannot really be the same. Both are probably equally important but in essence, I can truly say one is above the other. My view here, Education is whatever learned. I define it as knowledge and experience not necessarily in school. It can also be wisdom and manners, in my opinion. Degree, well, it's something you get when you master or finish a course in school, but it does not automatically means one is truly educated when one has a degree, but I guess some of you would disagree.
Let's hear from you friends and then let's give some examples to clarify our explanations, please.

Education has wider scope, it's everything about learning. But degree is part of the education level. The rank in education start from primary school, secondary school, a-level (some go to gain skills through working or vocational route), diploma, degree, master (some go to professional which is much specific skills in related area) and phd. From phd, you can move to have professor tittle.
Clearly, degree is just a small part of education structure. But, why people get the knowledge? To have a better living cause with qualification, we have better chances to get better job with good salary. But, there's another alternative for us to get better job and pays, through high skill on certain job and professional skill. This skill and professional actually can give you better income than the job with good qualification.

I want to add something here, do you think all the millionaire has a degree or a diploma? No.
Did you ever heard Boon Siew Honda? This fellow don't know how to read and he is a millionaire. He's involving himself in business. Business is something you cannot get from school or university. You can get it from the street. It's gifted. You don't really need any skill or knowledge to start one, all you need courage, self motivated and patient. But to sustain it as a going concern, you must have planning and new ideas.

I know some very wealthy, successful, and well-known people in history who have not attained any degree in education, just like the example you have given.
There are, in fact courses regarding business management in schools, but some people are just born with these skills while others acquire knowledge through experience.
Schools introduce and/or help sharpen these knowledge and skills.

You have clearly described education structure in schools resulting to degree, I have no arguments with that, but I believe I was pertaining to education in general, like being street-smart or the likes as opposed to degree gotten from schooling. Anyway, I do appreciate still your opinion on this. Thank you for that.

this is a great discussion. at least you are trying to stimulate a worthwhile discussion from mylot. education for me is broader than degree. although they are quite interchangeable because having the other presumes to have the other. when one applies for a job, the degree is what employer looks at. it is assumed that if one has a degree, he is educated in certain point and field.

I do agree on your statement about both being presumably interchangeable, and although it is also presumed that one is educated in the field of the degree taken, it is not always true, right? I mean, I have known a lot of people who graduated and have degrees in computer science, computer engineering, and the likes, and they know very few about basic computer things. It's ridiculously insulting.

What you said is true choybel. Education is a manner of learning process in life, in school, in a community, in surroundings or in a certain situation. You cannot be called educated if you acted out of character or out of values. We can earn a degree in school and be educated about it but it does not apply into general rule being educated.

Degree is the proof of the education which you require in job searching. One cannot make out from one meeting that someone has so much education if there is no degree with the person. So, it becomes easier for everyone one, the company and the job seeker. Thanks for sharing and have a wonderful day ahead

Hey thanks for putting up this discussion. I have always felt that both are relative terms but are entirely different from each other. Education is the fundamental right of a human being and is of utmost necessity for him to survive in this society while a degree on the other hand is obtained when u complete a certain course and that is helpful for the further requirements. A degree is necessary for the short term but education is always helpful for longer term goals.
What say?

Very nice points you've mentioned here; education is for long term or even for life perhaps while degree can only serve it's purpose just whenever necessary. This is what I understand from your response and I agree with that. Education being a fundamental right is also deep and true. I appreciate your input on this.
