hi friends. first of all i am very happy that west indies have won the world cup and a bit sad that srilanka failed yet another time in the world cup finals. but now straight to the topic. just checking Darren Sammy's record as captain in all 3 formats. 4 wins from 21 test matches. 8 wins from 17 T20 matches. 17 wins from 41 ODI matches. as u guess majority of the T20 victories came during this world cup. poor record in ODi and Test matches and a ok record in T20s. if i remember correctly critics from all over the world were clamouring for Sammy's head for being a poor captain.poor guy. but the bigger question is this. he has poor record as captain in all 3 formats but he won the world cup for West indies after 39 years. does this world cup victory makes him a great captain even though stats were against him?

I am happy that west indies have won because we haven't won for the longest time now . Everyone here in my country is celebrating, even though I am not a sport fan . I dont know if it make him a great captain but he will be remembered .

I do not think that Sammy is going to win any greatness comparisons based on his win/loss ratios or his batting and bowling averages. But where he scores over a lot of others is in that quality of Leadership called as "Bringing Diverse people together". The manner in which he has manfully toiled through the all the controversies that affected the West Indies cricket and kept a low profile despite constantly facing negative press and criticism is actually inspiring. When he danced with the team after the victory it was symbolic as it was a joy of a man who was hoping that his team had turned a corner. I also think his speech at the end of the match were spot on and again it showed that he is very level headed person and one who deserves the praises that he is currently getting. Cheers! Ram

His captaincy record may be poor but still that guy has done great job given that WI cricket has too many issues which turned them into average team from being a great team.Relations between players and board in WI is worst and there are too many ego clashes, managing all that plus managing talented but moody players is not an easy job.He is great captain if we see form the perspective from WI,however overall he has to go a long way .

Hey thanks a ton for your discussion. I completely agree to your point. No doubt Sammy played a major role in leading his team to World Cup victory but i do not think this all ends here. he has to go on and prove his mettle in all the other forms of cricket and then only he can prove to be a dynamic captain. He needs to work on other formats of cricket before being a great captain for his team. What say?

Sammy is a great guy and has amnaged to keep hi team together. He has managed to control the likes of Gayle and Marlon who are never too far away from trouble. He has eked out winning performances from rookies. He has not succeeded overnight. He hsa suffered defeats before winning a major world title. For westIndies to come back in Tests they have to close the gape with other teams. Most teams play aggressively these days in all formats. Back in the 70s and 80s WI was the only team which used to play aggressively. So now it is a level playing field and that makes any captain's job that much more difficult. Sammy is agreat guy and time will tell whether he will become a great captain.

Definately this world cup victory will mark sammy as best captain as well as it boost their confidence in upcoming matches. This victory shows outstanding over all performance of their team. Especially a danger batsmen like chris gayle is a big advantage for them. Hope this team spirit goes on...

I do not think that a captain can be termed as great unless he leads his team to more number of victories and a higher ratio say 70 or 80% of matches ending as victory for his team. In this way, Darren Sammy is far away. Even a % of 60% should be good enough. Also, the team should be getting to more finals, and won a couple of tournaments including some Tri-Nation and more countries' tournament(s). Yet, Darren Sammy would be remembered for a long time for leading West Indies to their first T-20 World cup win.

I must say very good question , before answering that let see what is going on in other teams . First let see India , Dhoni is no were near the captaincy of Gangu yet for many indian he is best why he bring the cup home after 20 years . So dhoni is a better captain ? Well i dont think so , any let see as an individual performance . Sachin the greatest batsmen of all time from his country point of view . 100 centuries , but he is not a match winner , right . Now come to Sammy he is not a great captain compare to the past captain like WALSH,LARA ETC , but worthy enough to be where he is today moreover he do not need 200 cr tag to prove his worthiness .
