What is your biggest health issue?

Recently, I have had to take a lot of time to think about my own health, because I had a bit of a scare a couple of years ago and now I am doing everything that I can to make sure that I am happy and healthy.
The thing that I have to concentrate on was my weight. I was several stones overweight and I began to realise that I just couldn't do the same types of things that other people were doing every day because of this; so I started trying to lose weight to see if it would help me at all.
I stopped eating junk in between my meals, and changed the meals that I did eat to reduce my portion sizes and include more vegetables than I might have done in the past. This was brilliant for me, and I am glad that I did it because I am now a healthy weight for the first time in my entire life.
What is the issue that affects your health the most? What kind of steps are you taking to try to improve that?

Just before going to my work at 8 am I have my meal and the next meal I have after being back from work at 4.30 pm. And after that at night I dont feel to have any meal and I always skip it. Aside from this, I have planned not to have any meal but just a peice of biscuit and raw tea at night.
People in my location are getting infected with diabetes, pressure, nephritis etc. I dont want to get them. I dont want to bulky too though within past two years I got bulky a bit too. I am afraid of the lethal diseases are happening all around me.

I don't like eating late at night either, so I don't normally eat after I have eaten a meal at around 5pm. However, one of the things that you should think about is whether you could eat something else in the middle of the day, because you are going a long time without eating in the day and your metabolism would be a lot more steady if you ate regularly throughout the whole day rather than just having two large meals. You would have much less of a chance of diabetes if you did this as well, which would no doubt be a good thing.

Hi Gemma
Good that you are now taking care of your health. For me it was a case of mis-diagnosis for long 5 years and eventually when they got the diagnosis right, it was too late by then. I have Ulcerative Colitis(since 2000) and even Rheumatoid Arthritis(since 2008) and medically they say that the RA happened due to the UC. And today, I also have that Gall Bladder stones (and they say the removal of GB is the only way out but as I have UC it would worsen and complicate the matters. So I have the three right now).
I have tried almost all the available medications here - Chemists, Homeopathy and even Ayurveda but I dont feel they have anything for me within my budgets. I do have a prescribed diet which I am forced to have but then it has been long time and today I go beyond that diet many a times. Still... I am hopeful that someday sooner they would be able to heal me and I would get back to life

I have been reading about these ailments on the Internet too and today I am quite confident that I know more than my doctors about these ailments. The big issue with me is the names of the medicines I find on the Forums and other places, are much different here and as I am a non-medical person, I dont understand much about the compositions.
I also tried purchasing some of these medicines and also the anti-oxidants online. But the Paypal wont allow me to purchase anything as per the rules and guidelines of RBI(Reserve Bank of India) which denies any purchase via Paypal for Indian account holders.

My biggest problem is high blood pressure, which resulted in my having a brain haemorrhage last year. I spent almost a week in hospital and did not go to work for a month, which proved to be rather expensive but well worth not taking a risk. Naturally I now have regular medication to control the level of pressure, and I have had to change some of my eating habits. I no longer add salt to food and do avoid a few other items as well.
I have even bought a blood pressure monitor to keep track of it because I have no desire to experience anything like that again.

It is awful that your health issue led to you being so ill, but I guess that the good thing is that you now know about it and this means that you are able to do something and sort it out. Not having salt with food is something that I think a lot of people should be considering because it really isn't good for us, and there is already a healthy amount of salt in the food that we're consuming anyway so adding any more isn't healthy. I stopped adding salt a year or so ago and I have to say that I don't even miss it, or really notice the difference in the taste of it.

For me the issue would also be my weight. I am not doing all I can to improve it, and I realize that. I should go outside right now and walk at least a little ways. being overweight contributes to many diseases, like heart disease and diabetes, for example.

One thing is that I quit letting my husband serve my portions. Another thing is cutting back or cutting out eating out. I am planning a few extra steps into my daily routines, and I just bought a twist board to use cause it is fun. If knowing about weight loss and health would help, I would be almost all the way there.

It's a great idea to start taking control over your own portions. I guess men can eat a little more than we can, and if we let them serve our portions then the only thing that is going to happen is that our own portions will gradually get bigger and we will gain weight. I have stopped going out to eat most of the time as well, as you can never be sure exactly of what they're putting in the food. Also it is a little expensive as well, so it means that you can at least save a bit of money while you're trying to control your weight at the same time.

One of the scary things about being overweight is the fact that we don't always realise how bad it is until something really bad happens to make us realise it. This is what happened to me, and now I spend a lot of my time trying to encourage people to do something about their weight before it becomes a life threatening issue for them. You should try to change small things about your diet now so that you don't have to worry about it as much later. You should also think about doing some exercise, as that can help greatly.

My biggest health issue is my joints deformity and non-functionality. The doctors advised me for joint replacement around 8 years back, but I wasn't ready for it. Now I have made up my mind. I just hope that may everything fall in place and my parents may see me walking again. I have seen tears of pain in their eyes. Now I want to see a bright smile on their face. There is so much I want to do for them.

It is a shame that you were not ready for it when it was offered to you, but at least you know that there is something that can be done about it. You will get a lot of help from your doctor as they would be able to help you through it. My Mum is a nurse and I know all about the help that they give people. And one of the good things is that you would be able to make your parents smile because they would be able to see that you weren't in pain anymore and that you could start living life in the way that you would like to again.

It is very hard to lose weight, I know that. I think that you have very much got the right idea though by thinking that you will go for a jog first thing in the morning. One of the reasons that many people think that they can't lose weight is because they can't afford to go to the gym. However, there is no need at all to waste money exercising, as everything that you can do in the gym is something that you can do at home. Certainly the running machines you can definitely do at home as it is much nicer to run outside in the open air anyway.

hey riya, being lazy doesnt help in this case. If you want to remain fit, you need to take exercises. if you are lazy about getting up in the mornings. Atleast try to go for jog in the evenings. But evening air would never be fresh and so its always better that you go for jogging in the mornings. Take off your laziness and try to get up in the morning..

I agree fully that being lazy doesn't help at all. I think that one of the main things that you need when you're trying to lose weight is the motivation to succeed, and this is just something that is essential because you have to have that drive otherwise you're not going to be able to do it. Evening jogging is perfectly fine, but the problem is that you then have the whole of the day to talk yourself out of it. If you go as soon as you get up in the morning then there is no way that you would choose not to do it because it would be over before you had the chance to change your mind.

That's awesome! Good for you. So many of us, including myself, would be better off if we would lose weight. I am on disability, so I have several health problems. My doctor would tell you my worst problem is the damage done to my neck and back from a car accident. I would tell you the worst problem I have is my migraines. Technically, the back and neck problems are more serious. However, I have migraine pain more than 18 days a month. I go through prescription migraine pills like candy. I cannot get rid of them. And that is my worst health problem.
Congrats once again on your accomplishment!

I think a lot of people do need to lose weight but one of the worst things is that you need to have amazing motivation to be able to do that, and a lot of people just don't have that motivation. I am sorry that you suffer so badly with your migraines. My Mother gets them from time to time, and they don't really ruin her life but I do know that she is in a lot of pain. The problem with prescription medication is that sometimes it can make the issue even worse if you take too much of it so maybe it would be a good idea to try and cut down a little bit.

Id say stress is my bigest problem and I counter this with yoga and meditation. Allother health problems I have can be traced back to stress.

Stress is one of the most dangerous things that is out there because of the fact that it can cause so many negative health issues in people. Exercising is a brilliant way to relieve stress, and yoga is a relaxing exercise that you can do to try to deal with the amount of stress that you have in your life. It is good in a way that you know that your health problems have been caused by stress, as this means that you can rule out anything else that would have been worse, as there are many worse things that certain things can cause in our health.

What I am dealing with right now is a ton of stress brought on by a series of events from last year. That stress has caused me to lose 50 pounds, and not in a good way. I lost muscle mass, energy, feeling weaker, and now getting sick. I admit, I was a heavy guy, my biggest being 5'9" and weighing 355. I played football, and was a weightlifter, that's why I was so big, heavy, and brutally strong. But, even though being the size of a small horse does not sound practical, safe, healthy, or reasonable to most people, this is where I was feeling my best because I still had agility, and ran quite a bit. Now because of the stress, I am still pretty strong, but I am not the gorilla I once was. Ironically, I know people that are bigger than me, but I weighed more than them, which baffled their minds, until they found out what I did. The biggest problem I as mentioned was the stress issue. Last year, I was hit losing my job, being thrown out of school, and losing my apartment, having no money, nor could I find any work because the employment situation was so bad. I did managed to get past some of the problems but I still have a long way to go. Some of the problems took care of themselves, but for the rest, I had to learn what was going on with my health and body, and learn how to overcome that, since I was not able to go to a doctor. I learned that mental problems like stress and depression can easily turn into physical health problems, as it alters the body's signals, and chemicals, and everything in between. I lost interest in everything I loved doing, and everything was just so negative. I was working hard to find even the smallest things that made me happy to cherish those things to build from that. On of my big setbacks right now is my environment. It is hard to make a recovery when your environment is in shambles, so my goal is to move someplace else, where I can improve my progress. In fact, I just received health insurance not to long ago, and I had to take a health assessment and the results of that showed that I need to address the depression as a top priority. At least a test agrees with me. Once I can get past everything that has caused me to fall down, then I can concentrate on smaller things to address, return to the things I loved doing, and finding ways of making myself happy again. Sorry for the long post, but this is the first time anyone has asked me about what is wrong with me, and actually cared.

Stress is ever something that is good, and if it is because of something that happened to you last year then this is bad because it means that it is lasting much longer than it should be doing. In a way, losing a little weight would have been good for your health, but it does sound as though you have lost too much now. Have you thought about seeing a doctor about your stress? There might be some way that they could help you, and this would mean that you would no longer have to worry about your stress taking over your life.

The biggest health issue that I am dealing with right now is my back problems. I recently found out that I have a herniated disc in my back and my intention is to lose some weight to help with that for the long term. In the short term, the thing that I am doing to help with these issues is that I am having physical therapy, regular chiropractic manipulations and massage therapy. This is helping in the short term, but I know that the weight loss is the most important in the long term.

It can be bad when you have problems with your back, because it might mean that you can't really walk round as much as you should be able to. My Mother in law is having issues with her back at the moment and it means that she is not able to work. This is having a negative effect on her because it means that she is just not able to work like she might have done in the past. She is trying to lose weight as well and I honestly do think that this would help her problems as it means that the body is not trying to carry as much weight.

Actually, i don't have a big health issue. Except that, the last time we have an annual physical; check-up, my cholesterol was some notches over the normal.
I was given simvastatin for that and after a month it's now okay again. Hence, i am now having meals composed mainly of fish and veggies. I do eat meat, but only once in a while and they are of the lean type. I eat chicken without the skin.
Most of all, i exercise by dancing vigorously and doing crunches, so the fat on my stomach would melt. I feel good that i am lighter now, by 4 pounds.

It is good that you have managed to get it back down to normal, as it is something that can affect us in the long term if we are not able to do this. Often, we don't realise how bad our cholesterol is because it is something that we don't automatically get checked for in our country. The best thing for everybody to do is to just make sure that we are eating a healthy diet daily as this means that we are much less likely to struggle with things like cholesterol. and we will therefore be able to have a much better and healthier future.

My biggest complaint: tinnitus (ringing in my ears ... kinda like you hear right after a loud 'bang' or 'crash' or 'slam', but all the time (it seems)).
The only way I might control it: keep my blood-pressure down, which I don't know any way to do except lots-&-lots of garlic
Any other suggestions (for the tinnitus OR the blood-pressure).

One good way to be able to keep your blood pressure down is to try to reduce the amount of stress that you're under on a daily basis. One of the ways that you should be able to do this is to write down everything that is causing you stress, and then trying to think about everything that you could do to reduce that stress. Whether that means giving colleagues a different responsibility at work, or whether you ask a family member to look after your children for one night a week, every little thing would help you to get rid of at least a little bit of stress.

I have a lot of health issues. But one of them is my asthma. I have asthma since when I was grade 1. And I even regret how I got it. Because I eat a lot of junk foods way back them and that's the time when they discovered that I have an asthma when I came through a sickness and I couldn't really breath so hard. :)

I was diagnosed with asthma when I was a lot younger, and I struggled with my symptoms all of the way through my school life because of the fact that it did impact on my ability to get involved with things like sports. Then I started to play an instrument that I had to blow into, and I think that it must have helped my lungs to learn how to blow air properly, because it made everything a lot better. Now, I am even able to run without getting out of breath so things are a lot better than they were when I was younger.

Hi GemmaR, The biggest health issue so far was my heart i think something is going on and i do not know what it is. Recently i have had some shortness of breath and difficulty in breathing, i think i need to do some exercise since i am always sitting here in front the computer. Now every morning and night i try to walk around and do some simple work outs to help my heart to pump properly. But to be sure i will visit my doctor after i receive my health card which going to be release within this week.

It is horrible to have something wrong with your heart, because we all know that this is something that is one of the most important organs in our bodies. In order to keep our hearts healthy, the best thing that we can do is to try and eat a healthy diet and get regular exercise. This means that the amount of fat that is surrounding our heart can be reduced and it makes its job easier. You should also try to avoid stress as this can put pressure on your heart and this is something that you could do without if you're already having problems.

There is no way that you can possibly be gaining weight without either changing the amount that you're eating or changing the amount that you exercise, because the only way that you can gain weight is by overall eating more calories than you're burning off. It can be very easy to increase your portion sizes without really thinking about it, and a lot of us do it without realising, so the thing that you should do is have a look at the packages and see how big a portion size should be so that you know in the future.

Now, I have a job that demands a lot of overtime. I can get less amount of sleep. I get migraines. I am trying to control my body to sleep six hours a day. I guess this is not enough for me. In between breaks in the office, I can get a nap so that my mind can rest for a while and it might lessen the migraine. I am still continuing to search for vitamins and medication that can help me overcome this issue.

It sounds as though you are far too tired and are very stressed because of this. One of the things that you could do would be to make sure that you try to eat a healthy diet, because this can help you to feel a lot better about everything that goes on in daily life. If you are working long hours to the extent that you're not able to get enough sleep then you should seriously think about whether you should be working such long hours or not, because this is something that is never good for your health and could have serious side effects in the long term.
