Time for a new computer

(I'm using the PC right now). When I bought my Mac Mini, six or so years ago, it was brand new, with lots of room to upgrade. But with all the software updates, it has finally come to the point where I can't update anything. My Firefox got corrupted a year ago and I can't download the newer versions, so I've been struggling with Safari. I say struggling, because half the time when I click on something or search it "can't find the page". Argh! I tried to download some coupons the other day to print out, but apparently the version of Adobe Flash wasn't spiffy enough for them, and was urged to update it. Well, I can't. So no coupons. Wah! I started this discussion on my Mac but Safari took another hissy fit in the middle of it and when I came back to it, the screen was a lovely sky pink. I had originally wanted to ask what the difference was between - Intel HD Graphics 3000 and - AMD Radeon HD 6630M Technology is moving too quickly for me.

My computer is more than 10 years old and I'm about ready to spend money I don't have and get a new one. It is so frustrating--I turn it on in the morning and it's 30-60 minutes before I can navigate easily. It's like it's loading the whole world up but there's barely anything in my Start folder. I nearly threw it out the window this morning. I wish PCs weren't so costly. I wish you luck in getting a new one!

Thanks. At least I'm not alone in my frustrations. Money is a consideration for me, too, that's why I'm wondering what the difference is in the graphics, besides an extra $200.

@dragon54 I don't think you need a new computer right now. First check your Hard disk. Your hard disk must have enough room for your computer to use as scratch disk. Your computer need this to perform well. 2nd Clean your system of unwanted garbage. There's a lot of software in the internet that clean Computer system and you can download them free. Also uninstall all unwanted software and also make it a habit to regularly defrag your computer. Also check your start up by using free software, most start up programs does not show up in start up program. Cheers!

Oh I feel good when I see somebody using a 10 year old PC..:) As I see it, nobody wants it. I am reminded of Julie Andrews answering Christopher Plummer in TSOM about her dress, why didnt you give this one, she answered, the poor didnt want it..lol So there is no resale value. Which means we might as well use it till it can no longer be of use. :)

I have an AMD Radion 3000 Graphics Card (whatever that is) lol. It's not HD either but there again this PC is a desktop and cost about £460, something like that. I don't use the original wired keyboard and mouse with it though; I have a wireless Microsoft combo instead..oh, and the speakers are extra as well. It all mounts up. As for the graphics you mention..I haven't a clue what the difference is either although I would say my previous Sony had an Intel Pentium 4 processor and lasted 9 years. So you might want to bear that in mind.

Haha! I do know that the faster the processor the more tasks one can perform at once, with no impact on performance but it's determining which one's the fastest for the amount of money one wants to pay.

Wow my mother used to have a computer that really make me when I try doing anything on it , it just freeze and that irritates me because I have to wait so long for things to load . Whenever I leave the PC to load something I would just go back to find it blank . I am using a laptop got it last year and I know by next year I might have to get something new because I love playing game and my computer have to be in top shape to play the new games with all those graphics . The games graphics are so high that if you dont have a computer with lots of memory and graphics you cant do much . Every year something new comes out and taking up space on your system and , every new updates .

Hi barbara Well, there is a difference between a dedicated and an integrated graphics card. A dedicated graphics card is always better than the integrated one, unless the dedicated memory and clock speed is low in the dedicated graphics card. Intel HD 3000 is an integrated graphics card, which shared some of your RAM memory for running graphic demanding applications whereas AMD Radeon HD 6630m is a middle class graphics card with a decent graphics performance and it is much better than Intel HD 3000 if you are running graphic intensive applications that is. You don't even need that much of graphic power when you simply browse websites and all, like in a regular PC use. I recently bought myself a new Lenovo laptop which has a pretty decent power packed graphics card and now I am able to play graphic intensive games, and I am totally satisfied with it's performance. The main difference is that a dedicated graphics card has dedicated memory allocated for graphics performance whereas the integrated graphics card takes some of the memory from you RAM is going to equally effect your computing performance as it is taking some of the memory from the RAM. Your CPU handles the Intel HD 3000 therefore lowering the computing power whereas AMD Radeon HD 6630m has it's own graphics processing unit (GPU) unit so it's much much more powerful than integrated graphics card.

Finally! A definitive answer. Thank you very much. I don't play fancy games on my computer, just solitaire, but I would like to be able to watch some TV shows on it. As it is now, they don't stream very well at all on the Mac, so I watch on the PC. But now I'm noticing some hiccupping in the streaming on the PC too.

I am glad to help. Well then, if you don't play heavy games then you shouldn't be having any issues with Intel HD 3000 because they are enough to handle normal video playback requirements. Solitaire, I play that too.

I'm using the AMD right now, so far, I don't have any issue and I'm contented. It's quick and helpful to me. They say that this processor can be use for 17 hours non-stop without heating, that's according to the technician. It just I added 2 coolers. Because we don't have any air conditioner. By the way, I'm from the Philippines. I need to test the 17 hours straight yet and see for myself. Thanks

Hello BarbaraPrz, If you're using your PC just for surfing and doesn't use software that use a lots of graphics, and your graphic card still okay, there's no need for you to upgrade to any of the two graphics card above. The two graphics card are expensive and are for gaming enthusiasts. I believe your computer is still fine. Do you regularly clean your PC of unwanted trash? I think you're PC is experiencing a slow down because of too much trash in your computers. There are many free computer software that clean your computers of those unwanted garbage. Also try to uninstall unwanted and unused software. Also investigate your start up, there maybe a lot of programs loading automatically on your background that literally consume your memory. Learn also to defrag your computer regularly. Also check your hard disk, there should be enough space for scratch disk, your computer need this to perform well.

My PC is already 5 years old and it is still running smoothly as ever. I believe there's no need to replace my computer right now and that it can last for another two more years is a breeze.

I like Firefox, too. Unfortunately, something effed it up on my Mac and I can't download a new, older version of it. The new version is for a higher operating system than what I have, and I can only upgrade the os one tiny step more, nowhere near where they are now, having just released yet another one. !!New!! Improved!! can be a real pain sometimes.

Actually they are both graphic cards with the high definition feature on it, and basically these two models are almost the same in capabilities to run programs requiring high graphic process. Intel for intel processors and radeon for AMD processor.

I think it is the time to improve your PC hardwares-- to buy a new one. Technologies have been improved all the time, it provide us efficient ways to work, more enjoyable to entertain, so why not try a new computer to replace a old one which has been used for 6 years?

I'm in your wavelength simply because I too am starting to have problems with my netbook as well as the desk top computer I'm using. (Change that to having had to deal with the problem of crashing, a script is busy preventing a page from opening, errors ... for sometime now. I'm just being optimistic). Actually the decision to bet a new computer hinges on "which brand and model is best for my purpose?", monetary consideration - price-wise, value for money, downtime to learn the new features...and a lot of other things as well. Oh well, I guess one of these days, when really left without a choice, I will HAVE to sit down, do some pencil pushing and get down to the serious business of searching for the right one and plunking down the equivalent amount! Good luck on your decision making - and your choices.

Thanks. I'll probably get another mini, but the new ones don't have a disk slot.
