My 3.5 years old son is interested in helping me to cook, hence I am thinking of some simple recipe for him. We have just made this simple pastry with just flour, water and honey. My son put the flour into the bowl, add some water, and stir. After stirring, he added honey too. The original recipe is actually adding sugar, but I prefer honey, as I think honey is healthier. My son wanted to pour the liquid into the pan, but I am afraid the stove is too high for him, hence I just take the pan down, let him pour in the liquid, then only I put it back to the stove. So, I just helped my son to take the pan, fry it, and take the pastry out from the pan. My son did the rest of the work. I am thinking what to do next with my son.

Can he eat peanut butter? There's a really easy peanut butter cookie recipe out there, does use white sugar and I doubt honey would work... http://allrecipes.com/recipe/flourless-peanut-butter-cookies/ Super easy and super good - add chocolate chips for a to DIE for treat!

Moreover, I haven't buy an oven yet. I'll go and get one some time later, so I can make more cakes or cookies together with my son.

Simple bread. They love kneading the dough and making bread animals. We usually make bears and turtles. I also give mine chores while I am cooking. An egg slicer is a great tool they can use without being hurt. They can cut up eggs of coarse, pitted olives, strawberries and peeled kiwi, melon etc.

hi opinionatedLady, Bread animals sound nice! I let my son use plastic knife to cut, as I am still not confident to let him use real knife at this age, but he enjoys using plastic knife too.

Hello kaka. Nice to see you encouraging your son in the area of cooking. A lot of times people think that 3.5 is too young to do anything in the kitchen. I have a friend whose Three boys were always involved when ever she was in the kitchen. They were on chairs and sometimes sitting on the counter. They started as young or younger than your boy. I spent the night there one time and they boys fixed breakfast for us. (With her supervision) The did toast hash browns and eggs. It wasn't pretty but heck, it was cooked done and tasty. Not bad considering there were three cooks and they were all under 7 at the time. The next time you make a raised bread give him some to work with. When my girls wanted to learn to cook I gave them mixes to do and I watched to see that they measured right then I had to leave the kitchen because it was had to watch them make a mess. It was easier to clean the mess up than it was to watch them do it and not get after them.

hi deebomb, I always try to let my son do whatever he likes. At the age of two and above, the kids like to imitate the adults, the kids like to cook, do housework, read, whatever the parents do. I understand we may need to spend more time to clean up the mess if we let the kids do it, but in long term, we'll save more time, as later the kids are going to do all these well and neat.

THis sounds like a very interesting pastry. I love these things. Honey is healthier than sugar. Your son is very young and that is good that he is having such interests at such an early age. He should be a great cook when he becomes a man and mom will be very proud of him.

Thanks. I suppose all kids like to cook and do housework, they just need someone to encourage them when they are young, as they think it's fun to do all these work.

Kaka, seems like nowadays children tends to be very curious and always wanted to imitate what the adults are doing. Same goes for my son, he likes to helps me washing plates and spoons although i asked him not to, since i scare he gets cold later. He even helps me to take in clothes that are dry. Sometimes even helping me to fold the clothes when he is bored with his toys. It is good that children are creative and a good helper. I always allow my son to help me out with my daily household chores whenever he is boring. Perhaps you can allow your son to help you do the simple household chores as well.

Wow..here's our next li'l Anthony Bourdain!! I guess your kid will be a great creative person as he grows up! Hmm..maybe am thinking too far but he will surely impress girls :) 3.5 is very very young to even know names of stuff we eat and this wonder kid is already helping you out. Teach him simple sandwiches that need no cooking..assembling salads..and so on. In future, he could be at a culinary school..if he continues to enjoy doing this.

thanks! Actually I think generally kids like to do anything that the adults do, they like to imitate the adults. My son always likes to help out since he is young, whenever I do anything at home. We have been making egg mayo sandwiches, and he always helps out with washing and cutting work when I cook too. (using plastic knife to cut) Recently, he started to ask me to let him do with the actual cooking part, hence I just let him try. As for knowing the names of the food, I think when we tell them to the kids, they can remember the names very well. Believe me, their memory is extremely good! Kids can really do a lot of things out of our expectations.

Children love to try new things and since things that come out of the kitchen normally mean food that is an added bonus. The pastry looks like a little pancake, did you use an egg? There is a crazy cake http://allrecipes.com/recipe/crazy-cake/ it is made with cocoa rather then chocolate and takes sugar but the fact that it is really easy to make, there is also a fun effect with the vinegar that reacts to the bicarbonate of soda/baking soda and goes all foamy so it is great to look at. It tastes somewhat like store bought cakes rather then home made cakes but it is tasty all the same and since it has no eggs it is less rich then most cakes. There are several recipes that are appropriate for young children, this site has a few http://www.bbcgoodfood.com/content/recipes/favourites/kids-cooking/ I hope he continues to enjoy helping in the kitchen and actually gets a love of cooking, right now he is probably just experimenting.

Hello my friend kaka135 Ji, Well, with my reservation concept, I feel it is too early for your son to be in the kitchen for any help. This may have some complicated issues later On. As it is now-a days children schooling is booked befor their birth, which used to come at the start of five yrs during my childhood. Children have no childhood. Please be careful, you may explain him when time comes he will take your care and prepare everything you want. But I will decline for such teaching. May God bless You and have a great time

Wow! You are now looking at the future famous cook. You can help him pursue his ambition when he grows up. For starters, give him simple tasks that is safe. Safe means no fire or cutting tools. Let him mix the various baking ingredients or fruit juices. Show him the cooking procedure and explain to the danger of fire and knife. He is not to handle these items alone. Only when he grows up he can then learn these procedures.

Awesome kid. I really admire parents having their children involve in such activities. Interactive it is. They can come to appreciate the hard work we put into it. In their young age, they can practice things that will eventually make them someone in the future. If I will be having a kid in the future, I would also do that. Involve him or her in cooking or in any household chores in relation to his gae, of course. Thanks
