Should people in apartment complex have surround sound systems?

Hello myLot community,
I have a question that I want to pose to the community. Do you think people living in apartment complex should own surround sound systems?
Here is my view, I have livPe in apartments for several years. While I do understand the walls of the apartments are as thin as paper many times to the point that you can hear every little noise your neighbor makes, I tend to view the surround systems as inappropriate for use by apartment tenants. First let me say, I am generally pretty tolerant of the noise. Hearing the blasting sound of a surround system that is so loud that it vibrates off the walls. Makes me avoid rooms in my own apartment because they are so noisy, and so forth tends to drive me a little crazy.
It is my opinion that surround sound systems are pretty much push the noise level to an obnoxiously rude level. Especially, considering the close proximity. I have lived above people with surround systems and next door to them. Worse of all in between one neighbor with a surround system and another with high powered music system.
Personally, I see the point to these surround systems in a movie theater. I understand people wanting to create the movie going experience at home, but at what cost. Should the cost of wanting to have a movie theater experience come at the cost of interfering with your neighbors wants for peaceful quiet in their apartments?

Surround sound systems should not be in apartment buildings. They are loud and make more trouble that having a couple of hours of the theater effect at home.. But if you are a person that must have that loudness there are wireless head phones that are avaiable that you hook up into the back of your tv.. Then everyone is happy and no one has to deal with that loud thud or what ever the case may be... I would suggest kindly to your neighbors to find those head sets... For a while there were on tv; two pair for 20 or 30 dollars... If they can afford an expensive surround sound system they should be able to afford some nice head phones too..
I know what you mean by loud surround sound systems.. when I had to stay with my mom and dad for awhile they had one... In a trailer.. get woken up at 2 or 3 in the morning... some people ready dont care about others!!!

Thanks for sharing this discussion. Well when in an apartment, we should always make it a point that we are not living as a family but living in a community and have to abide by their rules and regulations and not to do anything according to our wish. Coming back to the music systems, we should listen to music but not loud music by getting bigger sound systems and thereby annoying our neighbors.

I agree that it does not make sense to buy larger and larger sound systems especially when living in an apartment community.

It all depends. If the apartment building isn't sound proof, then I would have to say no, but if it is, then I can't see any harm in it. I don't think that I would because I know that I would not be staying in it for long.

I have lived in apartments for many years, and I have never heard of an apartment having sound proof walls. We are talking about paper thin walls here where you can hear everything. That is the issue...if the walls were sound proof there would no issue.

Yes, you have a point. You also rented to that apartment so you have the right also on that area. It is really irritating when you want peace but then your neighbor is inconsiderate about their other neighbors.I think better to talk with them politely that there is a time for playing surround sound systems and they should be more sensitive with their neighbors feelings when they are about to play music, if is a music or a noise pollution already.

I think it's not that bad if neighbors do not use surround systems at night. I had neighbor who enjoy his surround system every night. The sound nearly drove me mad. That was really really terrible!

Well, it does not matter the time of the day. It just drives me crazy. Like one day in the middle of the day, it was so obnoxious that it sent me running out of the house to run errands just to escape the noise.

The interesting thing was I asked the apartment complex if they have any rules against having sound systems. They said not at this point that they would take it up with the regional manager at the complex.

I think it really depends on how the apartment complex was built, in my apartment the walls seem pretty thick and I never really hear anything from my neighbors. I think as long as you're respectful on the time of day and the volume, it shouldn't be a big deal.

See that is kind of what perplexes me is why would you buy a surround system when you live in an apartment complex with people living so close to you. It is not even a logical purchase.

I have no problems with hearing the music or even the televion set of the neighbors. It is when the walls are shaking with the vibration that I gets on my nerves.

I think it's okay--as long as the volume level isn't on maximum, you don't use it during weeknights or days, and you are very amenable in case a neighbor requests you to tone it down. I used to live in an apartment complex back in college and we have a neighbor who even phones us to check if somebody's sleeping or if it's okay for him and his friends to watch this movie on surround speaker.
But if the owner can never be that responsible, I guess he or she better move out of an apartment complex.

As long as they dont play to loud or late at night. Id hope these people would respect others there. If they dont, then they should have this kind of sound system. What does the owner or manager say??
