Hi mylotters!
Do any of you like cooking? When I was young, I found cooking to be such a tiring chore, not an enjoyable thing to do.
But now, with the TV showing many 'fun way, no stress' style of cooking, I've become convinced that cooking is not difficult when you put your heart, a little bit of time, creativity and also research, especially for new recipes, into your cooking effort. There's no right and wrong in cooking (assuming you follow the basics in cooking).
Every cook has his own style of cooking and the 'taste' which according to his judgement, is perfect. Ever since I started to do more home cooking, my taste bud has become acutely sensitive. I can taste the difference between well-cooked and badly cooked dishes. When some food are not cooked properly, I get dissappointed and will not have the interest to eat the dish. I think I can become a food critic already. Can some mylotters please share their 'cooking' story?

I always liked cooking; creating new dishes.. When I was younger I really didnt understand the basics for cooking... I could write a book of different experinces that I have had over the years.. I loved to use fresh onions; green peppers, garlic, and some other veggies.. But I had a terrible time cutting them up.. Which leads me into my best cooking experince ever.. (Thank you so much for starting this converstation you really brighten my night up and proablity will never really understand why;-)
I was in my auntie kitchen trying to cut up some onions and green peppers for omelets.. I was never really good at it.. My aunt tried to show me how, and I just didnt seem to get it... Rick (my other half) walked into the kitchen and notice I was trying to saw an onion... He asked me what I was doing.. I told him that I was trying to get the veggies ready for omlets.. Rick told me that it looked like I was trying to cut my fingers off or something.. So he grabbed the knife, saw that the blade was dull, and said thats your problem.. I looked at him like what?? Didnt have much experince with knifes.. So he showed me how to sharpen the knife and cut one of the onions.. I tried to do the same thing... Well didnt get it yet... Rick ended up doing the rest of the onions and then did the green peppers too.. It was funny when I was doing the omlents by that time.. I was nervous.. totally screwed up the first one.. Then Rick made the second one.. Learned a couple tricks to it.. Prior to that I thought that omlets had a lot of stuff in the middle.. and it all depends on the size of the pan and how many eggs I use.. The third omlet I did it.. and I was able to get it done right... I was so excited, and hungry by that point.. It may seem like a lame story... but it was a great memory for me... Since Rick was my other half that passed away 6 months ago... It was one of those memories I would of never thought of before reading this discussion.. Thank you again.

Hi sjvenden,
I am glad this discussion brought back your happy memories with your late husband. Rick must had been a good cook and taught you a lot about food preparation.
There will always be a first experience for everyone and cooking is one of them. You can't become a good cook overnight. Practice always makes perfect and even better if your other half does it together with you.
Rick must be a very valuable person to you and I'm sure, his early passing has deeply affected you. But we all know, somehow, our life here on earth will end one day and we continue to pray for our loved ones, especially those who have left us.
May Rick's soul Rest-In-Peace and May God bless and strengthen you always.

Home cooked meals are better for you and are cheaper than eating out. Plus you get the food like you like it made. Have a great weekend there.

I agree it is generally cheaper and better for you though it can be very time consuming.

I am 22 and I live with my parents at the moment. I work from home, and because of this I do a lot of the work around the house as well. I decided a couple of months ago that I was going to start doing all of the cooking in the home, and I will admit that this is something that I have really enjoying doing ever since. Before I started doing this, I just could not cook at all. Now I know that I can make meals that the whole of the family will enjoy, and I am a lot happier in the knowledge that I am doing something that is helping the family out as a whole.

Hi micha, I love cooking. I learned how to cook when i was in grade school my mom and late grandmother taught me. I love to taste different kind of dishes local and international. Most of the time when i eat in different restaurant i always want to figure out what kinds of spices they incorporate in the food that i ordered. I can cook all the food that i love with the help of my personal collections of recipes from internet, friends, relatives and cook books. The best thing gift that i have in cooking are when i smell and taste the dish i can easily tell all the ingredients they used and i can cook it at home even without following or reading their recipes and I always trust my sense of smell and taste in cooking.

Home cooking is healthy cooking by honestly good food comes from good restaurants too. I can cook and I know I'm a good cook too when it comes to hubby's preference but I know mine is not that good compare to those good chef's cooking at good restaurants.
When I was young I knew very well that cooking will never be my thing until I got married and have liked it and it eventually became my passion.

I definitely think home cookers are the best. The kitchen is your lab, and you try and find how to make something delicious. When I cook, I use family recipes. They are the best I know. It is so interesting how much home cooking flavor is always the best. Putting your heart into it and allowing for a meal to be your own creation will bring one much joy when it comes together.

I haven't cooked in a little while as it has been my boyfriends birthday this week though I believe that I will start cooking again properly next week as its much too expensive to eat where I live all the time.
I have been getting into my Thai and Asian food though recently from Jamie Oliver's 30 minute meals they are really tasty and easy to make though they do make a big mess at times so you do maybe need a helper to do the cleaning up if you put the effort in. Obviously he has someone on the TV show to clear up after him lol. I usually spend more than 30 minutes too but if you can lessen your dinner cooked from scratch down to less than an hour you are doing very well.
I particularly like using chillies, garlic, onions and soy sauce. If you have a good food processor then I recommend you try his baked salmon with noodles dish it is really tasty as are the chicken dishes he uses in that cook book and TV show. I used to like making lasagne and burgers but lasagne takes so long as it has too many elements and I dislike touching raw meat.
I am a bit of a food snob too and know the difference between well prepared food and good ingredients as opposed to the latter.

hi micha!
I am fond of cooking too! In fact, I always watch cooking shows, I also print different recipes and it is my joy to try different recipes all the time. :D
I am fond of collecting easy, budget friendly recipes. I also have my favorite cooking websites. There are a lot of advantage in cooking meals at home instead of buying food s outside:
1. you know the food is fresh and newly cooked
2. you control the taste to your satisfaction
3. you can save more money
4.you enjoy healthier meals each day
5. you tend to enjoy and serves as a bonding moment with family members
Have a great day ahead!

Since me and the wife learned to cook, we seem to enjoy more of our meals as there is always a competition of who cooks better, and of course the kids being the judges. Fortunately they love my cooking more than their mom, lol! The advantage I think is knowing the effort we put through just to make our meals being appreciated, lol!

I can cook but I think not as good as other people. Cooking shows make cooking look easy but it is not. In fact, they show many processed seasoning that say it makes food easy to cook without sacrificing the taste. However, I do not aree to that. I am not a fan of processed food. As much as possible, I am trying to use natural ingredients in my recipe.

I like the home cooked food as well. but since am not able to make everything at home all what I want, i eat that thing outside. I like KFC and I do know how to make it. another thing is that I do not have a oven. if I had I would have made so many things. I wish to have it as soon as possible. Thanks for sharing and have a wonderful day ahead.
