Should I shave my head?

Recently I have been having really bad dry skin or what is commonly known as scurf in my family or cradle cap in babies. I found that by shaving my head short and quite far up my neck and the itches and dry skin in that area seems to have stopped. I am half thinking that if I shave it all off and treat it properly before letting my hair grow in that it won't get as irritated in the future. Get some really nice oil treatment etc.
I do have a number of wigs that I could wear if I had an emergency night out and it is coming up to Halloween so could be a good grim reaper.

Thank you for your response I think I will take into account everyone's response here and try it all in different combinations and hopefully that will do the trick.

A good grim reaper??!
Even though bald heads can be sexy on men or women, I think your condition can be dealt with without doing something so drastic as cutting off all of your hair, however, the final decision is up to you.
I would recommend getting a package of clear plastic caps, shower caps (they don't have to be expensive), and then put olive oil on your scalp every night. Rub it in. Put the shower cap on. Sleep in the shower cap.
Some of the oil might leak out from under the cap, but the oil is good for your hair and for your skin (unless you are allergic) so rub any overflow in/onto your hands, neck and shoulders if you'd like. Of course after you rub the oil into your hands, you are going to have to wash your hands (just like one would do in the nail shop after they get their nails done and oiled) so that you can do things around the house. After a couple times of doing this you will be able to guess how much oil you need to pour on your scalp to avoid leaking.
Do this at night, every night, or every other night until your scalp is in good condition. Do it for the rest of your life, perhaps twice a week. Comb any flakes out prior to taking your shower. Wash your hair in the morning using the gentlest setting on the shower nozzle--with the hottest water you can stand. After washing your hair, make sure to condition, condition, condition!!! Be super gentle with your hair!!
The bottom line is, even if you cut your hair all off, the problem will re-surface again if you do not take care of your scalp properly. It takes patience to take care of this type of thing (combing your hair may take an hour), but it can be done and your hair can be gorgeous.

I think it may be a good excuse lol. Though I think a friend of mine is very enthusiastic about me dressing up as a character called guu from a Japanese anime series or fanny Zuko from Grease.
I did try your idea but I am not sure that the oil soaked all the way into my scalp and may try shaving my head first and then continuing that idea which is a pretty good one as it did stop the physical burning and itching sensation but didn't do anything to the physical look of the condition.
I think that it was neglected so long that I need to have a good old go at it, though I will try to see if I can be referred again to a proper dermatologist as GPs only have so much experience of this sort of thing.

It's up to you, but just because you shave it, doesn't mean that it won't come back. You have to get special shampoo in order to really get rid of it. I know what you have because I have it as well.
You have Eczema or Dermatitis. It is treatable, but you should go to a Dermatologist when you get the chance.

I have been to the doctor before and I got prescribed a shampoo called oilatem but even that is not working terribly well at the moment. My hair isn't that long to begin with so thought it may be good to shave it and use some really moisturizing scalp oil as I hate the feeling and look of greasy hair. Think the hair may be getting in the way of the ingredients sinking into the skin of my scalp you see.

If it is necessary to shave your head to cure all your itches and dry skin, then you should go ahead and do it. It is alright for you to have baldhead for a while, your hair will grow back after a month or longer, no need to feel sad about shaving your head. But your itches will disappear and dry skin back to normal, that is what matter when you treat it poproperly and cure it once and for all.

I don't really have a problem with having a shaved head either you see especially since there are so many hats about since its getting colder now, its just the itches that drive me so crazy so would really like to do a proper job of it to get rid of it for a lengthy amount of time as you say. I also live in a city with a big punk and goth community so I don't think anyone would have that many problems with it.

if you ask me i would say it depends on you because only you can take a clear decision about your hair and how it can behave without it

It does seem like a possibility now, I did try the oil thing that someone else suggested but maybe think I need to shave my head first to let it really sink in and take effect.
