Acceptable Artistic Expression?

Normally liberals have a pretty high threshold for what is acceptable artistic expression, but this artist has some of them screaming foul! What say you? Is this one over the top?

How do you feel about how people are reacting to this display?

It bugs me because of its impact and racial overtones.
If gullible people didn't buy into this nonsense, and it was real art of a real witch doctor, and not a piece of propaganda, that would be a lot different.

When I saw the pic the only thing I thought of was Obama Care and that it is a commentary on the nature of the medical care that program is going to provide. I never thought of it as being anything racial. But now that you mention it, I guess some people will take it that way.
That being said, I think you are right that it's not real art, in the sense that a Halloween display is not going to be considered art. And it surely is a political statement.

How do I feel about the reaction? Unsurprised. Generally when things like this crop up, the people who don't like the politician it features support it, and those who support the politician react negatively. The reactions are to be expected.
As for the "art" itself, it's pretty clear whoever made it doesn't have an inkling of what Obamacare is. Like it or not, Obamacare is not by any means comparable to magical healing.

We've become over-sensitized. Remember when the ACLU used to regularly represent the KKK in court to get them the right to march? I think all it really did was to make people more aware of the KKK so that they repudiated their ideology and stand on race issues, but it made us all more aware of the Constitution. We knew we had to put up with that hate speech, and we knew we had to cherish the right to free speech more than we cherished our dislike for a particular group.
Now, I know that people will say this is a racist poster and that may be just because Obama is black. But since it's about Obamacare, the concept of "witch doctor" is very apt. And those are the words that people should be concentrating on, the image is meant to convey someone who is a charlatan, using magic gobbledygook to pretend to deliver good medicine.
I wouldn't call it art, but then there's lots of art that I wouldn't consider to have artistic merit.
We have to grow up and learn to accept that free speech means offensive speech is allowed. If the community hates this guy's sign, they won't patronize his business and that's how you get him to change it. But you can't force him to. How people react is the key. But even if they all dislike it, he could still have it. We need to grow up.

Stupid crap that I wouldn't call "art" if you paid me. Just like yellow pee Jesus or belly button lint in a vile. But if one is of the mind that artistic expression is so vitally important and needs increased government funding (which is a progressive stance in America) and trumps all, then STFU and deal with it.
I'm too cynical to comment on these things, though. In my mind, I picture of an Obama T-shirt-wearing, hope-and-change-chanting, PAC-contributing lefty creating this photo just to create another self-fulfilling prophecy. That may not be the case; and it's ridiculously stupid regardless. But it is just a picture and is no skin off my sack.
But it's not artistic expression. "Art" is relative. So people get to make that call individually. And I personally say this is just crap.

materfish, I'm glad you have a classier definition of art than a lot of people do. You are right that the picture isn't really art. I think it was made to be a Halloween display, but the idea was freedom of expression and whether people agree or disagree with the content, people still have that freedom.

It's gentler than "Kill Bush" so I don't personally care about what idiots choose to do.

That picture was seen at many tea party rallies. No lefty made it up.
Ann Culture, is that you?
