I am mixed on this article. As it states that restaurants and any cart that sells food or drinks is not allowed to sell a sugared drink (aka Soda) any bigger than 16oz. Now while I totally agree that most people I know drink way too much soda and it does contribute to health issues. However, I think like anything people should be able to consume as much as they want. I'm sure the soda companies are having a stink because it hurts their sales and they may also have to change their packaging. Though I'm not sure how this will hurt the restaurants exactly as there was no specifics? As most restaurants here offer free refills on Soda or coffee so other than asking for another refill it seems silly to worry about the size of the cup. Afterall, the reason I'd go to a restaurant is so I didn't have to cook and enjoy someone elses cooking not how much soda I can consume in a sitting.

I am a little irritated at this ban. I also realize that people sometimes have way too much soda but at the same time, when did we resort to controlling what people have available to them if they have the means to buy it? I think it is a bit overboard to try and control people to that extent. It might be that people should not drink so many sodas but I think it does violate a person's rights to dictate what they can and can not have.

Cutting back on soda begins in the home probably more than in the public venu. All it means for the restaurants that do not offer free refills is that customers will buy two drinks instead of one. So they will actually make more money. There is a high profit margin on carbonated drinks anyway. I think that instead of forbidding things, Health Departments need to focus on how to provide the necessary things to take their place. It is not going to have any kind of a positive effect to ban the beverages.

Thanks for sharing this discussion. I think it is a great move by the NYC health department looking at the aspect that soda intake might put adverse effects on a human body. No doubt the sales of the soda industry would vary but they have to cope up with the laws and people need to accept this decision with open heart so that they are made aware about this issue.
What say?
