What does "bar and bat mitzvahs" mean ?

Hi mylotters, when reading papers, i encountered the follow sentence like this :Her daughter was just reaching adolescence , the age when many Jewish children celebrate their bar and bat mitzvahs. My friends, what does "bar and bat mitzvahs" mean?

Well, "bar" is a male connotation, and "bat" is a female connotation. It pretty much is a long standing tradition for teen boys and teen girls in the Jewish faith that means that they are coming into manhood and womanhood. They have to recite from the Torah, they have a big celebration, and they go through certain rites of passage.

Thank you very much. From what you write i see "the bar and bat mitzvahs" means that girls and boys become adults when they go through the rites of passage.
