‘Navratri’ is a festival dedicated to the worship of a Hindu deity Shakti/Durga. The word ‘Navaratri’ literally means nine nights in Sanskrit, ‘nava’ meaning nine and ‘ratri’ meaning nights. During these nine nights and ten days, nine forms of Shakti/Devi are worshiped. The 10th day is commonly referred to as Vijayadashami or "Dussehra." We shall be observing this in our home by performing ‘puja’ for 3 days only; my elder son has come here with his wife, 4 kids from Hyderabad; my daughter has come with her kids too; we have invited our friends and relatives; they will remain present; they can feel the effect of the Mantras chanted by the priest. On the auspicious occasion of Navratri ; one can chant the following mantra after getting up in the morning; Karaagre Vasathe Lakshmi Karamadhye Saraswathi Karamoole Sthitha Govinda Prabhate Kara Darshanam Any such festival that you observe and feel blessed? Do you invite your kids; friends, relatives? Please share your valued opinion and comments. Thanks in advance. Kalyani October 16, 2012.

Hi, Having relatives, friends and member of the family to come home for an special occasion is quite exciting. It's good to welcome them and let them stay in your house and don't care about the noise, the mess and of course the extra money you will spend for your visitors. I am actually of planning to go home to my dad's house for his birthday. But since money is really a big factor for me to go I am now in the process of saving so that I could able to go. My situation is a bit different though co's going home to dads means I have to spend more... not just for my family's transportation cost but also for food and other things when I get home co's dad is not living a well off life, though he has work but the money he has is just enough for him and his family. So going to him means I need to have more money with me to support myself and family as well as them when I get there.::)) I am happy for you and your family. I hope you indeed enjoy every bit of their stay with you.

Hi, It is very nice that your house is full with all your children and grand children. I and my wife also become happy when our son come to visit us. I have only son and he is only 23 years old. So our family is very small. In our Hindu culture our festivals are celebrated with great enthusiasm. In our city Navaratri is celebrated everywhere. All the people gather together and dance garba. Beautiful idol of Durga mata is worshiped. From childhood I have the habit of chanting the mantra you mentioned in the morning, Karagre vaste Lakshmi, .......

dolls golu - keeping dolls golu
We invite people for Navaratri 9 days as we keep dolls steps (bommai golu in Tamil), which is keeping the variety of dolls depicting so many mythological, social events and idols of deities on steps meant for that. We make different types of Sundal, which is made out of ground nut seeds, bengal gram, chickpeas, dry peas etc. each day and give this sundal along with betel leaves, betel nuts, banana, kum kum and turmeric to ladies. Along with this we give small mirror, small comb and kajal box too along with glass bangles.

Our biggest family gathering throughout the course of the year is Christmas. That is when our family all gets together. First of all on Christmas Eve we typically gather with family members in Cincinnati where I have the opportunity to spend time with my cousins and my aunts and uncles. On Christmas Day we will usually spend some time with my mother, siblings and nieces and we will also typically spend some time with my in-laws and brother's in law as well.
