That is unless you want to include the Pope, who controls the assets of the Catholic Church, estimated to be larger than the holdings of the entire US government or the Rothchilds, who control every major financial institution in the world!

It actually isn't Bill Gates, largely due to the fact that the $ is weak at the moment. Therefore, whilst Bill Gates has the most money in the world (in terms of $), he isn't actually the richest man in the world.
The honour unofficially goes to Ingvar Kamprad, founder of IKEA, whose 48 Billion Euro fortune is worth more than Gates' $53 Billion
Of course, they're both incredibly wealthy....
