Bankruptcy and medical bills

You know, I've thought for a long time that our problems were going to be over in March of next year because that is the time at which all of our credit cards are going to be paid off. However, because of my husband's cancer treatment that he had to go through for half of last year and the first month of this year, we keep receiving medical bills that are just putting us deeper and deeper into debt. Of course, there is no way that you can consolidate your medical bills and the hospital that he had to use will try to get their payment from the state (it is a university hospital that is state owned) through income taxes.
It feels to me that the only solution that we have to this problem is to file bankruptcy. It isn't because of the fact that I want to get out from under our debt. In fact, I am glad to say that we are actually only five months out from having all of our credit cards paid off. However, my husband didn't ask to be a cancer patient and he definitely didn't ask to have these thousands of dollars of medical bills come to him despite the fact that he has health insurance.
Have you ever been through a bankruptcy? Do you think that even considering bankruptcy is taking the coward's way out of things? Is considering filing bankruptcy something that you believe a person should be ashamed of?

I am so sorry that you're having to deal with this.
My family is dealing with similar situtations and it is really difficult. It is pretty sickening to me how much doctor bills pile up. We actually were similar trying to pay off credits and we did and then mom got sick and has been fighting 3 years.
I don't know what we'll do but so far just struggling along. I pray the best for you.

I appreciate the prayers that you are sending up for us and I will do the same thing for you and your family.
It just doesn't seem fair to me that not only do our loved ones have to struggle with their illnesses, they also have to struggle with these astronomical medical bills that go along with their illnesses.

I mean at least when it comes to cancer there are little things that some medical facilities will do to help us, but it is usually not enough.
For example, I learned recently that the reason that all PET scans are done in trailers is because insurance companies will not cover a PET scan that is done in house. Thus, the cancer treatment centers keep a trailer with a PET scanner on site to save money for their patients.

No I don't think it is fair at all, either.
It is one of the most disgusting things I've found about our economies and our world, today. The numbers for cancer are only rising. The world is not changing in ways of helping us. They won't even help us in cutting out the huge fees for medical care. They don't help us at all. And the sickest thing of all is that the products we buy into every day are more than likely the causes for all of it. We should be finding different lifestyles or in the very LEAST cost effective help in our health care facilities.

THere`s nothing to be ashamed of, Dorann. It would be if you had gambled your money until you were on heavy debt. But it is not your fault that your husband had that expensive illness and if anyone is to blame is the laws that don`t protect people from getting into heavy debt when they are ill.

I couldn't begin to agree with you any more than I do. It is true that there should be some kind of assistance for the government for people that go through catastrophic illnesses. However they seem to think that you will be okay if you have health insurance and this is not the case at all because you have to reach your out of pocket maximum and for us that is thousands of dollars every year.
