When I was young, I was very thin. Since going into my later years, I have gained 50 pounds. I am now fat.
I am not good at losing weight. I have joined the Y but manage to not get there very often. I always find excuses not to go. I love food and although I try to eat healthy, I still eat too much and continue to eat foods that I should stay away from.
One of the problems is that my metabolism has slowed down. Has anyone tried any OTC products that might increase metabolism?
I am also interested in other methods used to lose weight. I do walk a a couple of miles every day but I now that i should be going to the Y regularly. And I know that I should cut back on my eating especially certain foods.

Phil, have you tried the Mediterranean Diet? It's more of a healthy eating plan than a diet, but you can eat lots of food on it, and it's all healthy stuff. There's plenty of information on it out there. To help your metabolism, why don't you try eating 4 or 5 smaller meals a day, rather than 2 or 3 large ones?
Another thing that could get you started is a week on the Cabbage Soup Diet. You can lose quite a lot - up to 10lbs or even more - and you can have lots to eat. Better yet, it boosts your metabolism, so you keep on losing more weight afterwards, as long as you eat healthily. I adapted the diet on my doctor's suggestion to incorporate more protein and carbohydrate, and I still lost quite well on it. You can do it once a month if you want to.
I've done quite a bit of research on it, and written an article on adapting it. I can't post the links here, as they're my articles, but if you PM me, I can send them through. Good luck, and keep us posted on progress.

I have heard about the Mediterranean Diet but I have not yet heard of the Cabbage Soup Diet. I will have to look into the latter one and refresh my memory of the first one. With the Mediterranean Diet, you basically eat the foods of the countries that surround the Mediterranean, right? Can I do both diets together?
I am doing better as far as my eating habits but there is still a long way to go. And I need to get off my big behind and go to the Y. I am paying $20 a mont and don't even go.
I am going to PM you.

Yes, Phil, the Mediterranean Diet is pretty much based around fruit, vegetables, lean protein such as poultry and fish and some meat. This site has some really good tips, and you can download a free cookbook:
: http://www.mediterraneanbook.com/the-mediterranean-diet/ :
You can also subscribe to the newsletter, for recipes and articles direct to your email inbox.
You follow the Cabbage Soup Diet for one week, then eat sensibly for the rest of the time, so yes, you can work with a combination of the two.

Hello bostonphil
As we all know eating fruits and vegetables are good for our health. I think it's better to be back at Y regularly if you think it has a good effect on you. You also mentioned that you love to eat foods. I think there are certain foods you should avoid to eat so you can maintain your weight. Give it a try!. Self-discipline, perseverance and the will power to say no to the foods that are not healthy.
Just try! Have a great day..:)

I got to the Y yesterday and I feel so much better today. I have back, foot and leg problems. I got in the hot tub, pool, sauna and then on the machines. it did not feel that good yesterday but I felt real good today. I was able to walk a lot today with almost no pain.
I was doing real good on my diet but got stressed today and ate three Pepperidge Farm cookies to make myself feel better. They were small ones however but sugar is still the first ingredient.
I know what I need to do to lose weight. Now I just have to do it.

Oh! Wow! That's delicious..:)
Yeah! sometimes we need to control ourselves because delicious foods especially rich in sugar are so tempting.
You can do it!..:)

There are a lot of people who need to lose weight, and the best thing that you can do is to stop making excuses about it and just go back to basics. You don't have to do anything about your metabolism at all; the only thing that you need to do is to make sure that you're eating healthily and doing a little bit of extra exercise, and you should find that you lose those pounds relatively easily. There is nothing wrong with having a tasty treat every now and again, as long as they are just treats and not part of your every day diet.

I was successful in eating much less and much lighter today. And I feel so much lighter. I feel better. I think that I may have my difficulties in dieting but I do not think that it will be as bad as I thought that it would be.

Hello. I'm happy to know that I'm not the only one here who is having trouble in losing weight. During high school I weigh 48 kgs and now I'm 51 kgs. I really want to lose some weight and remove these belly fats I have and form some abs.
A good friend told me how he removed his belly and formed abs for 6 months. For 3 months his 3 layer belly fats was gone and another 3 months he got abs already.
What's the secret?
He eats only 1 cup of rice per meal and every morning he really gives time for jogging. Now his body looks good. And I'm also on my way of doing it. Tomorrow I will have some exercise. Hope I won't get too lazy to rise from my bed.

So your friend ate only one cup of rice per meal and that was all? Nothing more than one cup of rice? And he did that for three or six months. That does not sound healthy nor interesting.
I am going to cut back on eating and I am going to exercise more. My weight loss may be slow, very slow but I love food and enjoy food. I am not ready to give it up.
I wish you lick in your attempts to lose weight. It's not an easy thing to do.

I lost weight by drinking a lot of water and eating 1 or 2 pink grapefruits every day. I bought the sectioned grapefruit in a jar mostly. But I found two links that might help on speeding up your metabolism. www.ehow.com/how_4728654_speed-up-metabolism.html and www.livestrong.com/article/31364-speed-up-metabolism/ Years ago I worked with a guy who was pretty skinny. One day he told me he used to be really fat. I couldn't believe it because he was so skinny. I asked him how he kept the weight off. He said he didn't eat much at one time and he always carried a sandwich in his pocket. It sounds funny but he said that way when he did get hungry he had a sandwich and wouldn't be apt to go looking for more food for a while after he ate it. In one or more of the above articles the say to eat more frequently. Not less, just spread out the same amount of food over the whole day - 5-6 meals as opposed to 3. Certain foods speed up your metabolism. Hope this helps. Oh, with grapefruit and water I also ate other food but I stopped using Half & Half in my tea. I lost 17lbs in 6-8 weeks.

Thanks for all the info. I have started searching on line for tips and suggestions. There is a lot of information out there and some of it is conflicting. Nutritionists and others in the diet field do not always see eye to eye. I am getting a lot of good ideas and using what i think works for me best.

Yes bostonphil, our metabolism slow down in our later years and they are responsible for our weight gain as we grow older. And as we age we also have the tendency to led an inactive life that added pounds to our bulging body.
I can see that you are looking for a quick fix to your weight problem because as you say you are lazy to exercise. Most OTC pills are ineffective and most of them lighten anything but your wallet. Also some of them are outright dangerous to your health.
So the only effective way to regain not only your sexy body but also your health is through proper nutrition and exercise.
NO PAIN, NO GAIN !

You hit it on the nail. My metabolism has slowed down and I am no longer as active as I used to be.
I know what I need to do. I need to exercise more and eat less plus eat better. I would also save money if I ate less food.
I wanted a quick fix. I was hoping that there was something out there that would speed up my metabolism so that i would not have to diet or exercise. But I guess there is not.
Like you said, no pain, no gain.

Weight loss is a multi billion industry that feeds on our desire to have a sexy body without sweating it out. But actually, the wonder pill is still just an illusion. There is nothing better than a good work out and a good balance diet.

It sounds like you know what you need to do but the problem is getting motivated to do it. I hear ya, I'm the same way! Have you ever tried joining work out classes or groups, or organized one? Sometimes having it be more of a social thing helps and having other people around to motivate you can keep you from getting too lazy. There are also lots of online sites and apps that help you keep track of your calories and exercise. Sometimes keeping track of that stuff and being able to see it all in black and white keeps you motivated also. Good luck!

Joining or organizing groups would not help me. I am a severe chronic insomniac and my sleeping is so erratic that I can not be counted on. often i can not get to the Y because I did not sleep at all the night before. I also have a slipped disc and facet joint syndrome. I do not believe that I could participate in work out classes.
However, some of the machines at the Y really help. There is one that really helps my back. it is for lower backs. The pool and hot tub also helps. I need to get to the Y more often and I just need to stop eating so much. I eat too much and I do not exercise enough. I need to change.

I know how you feel. Ever since I was young, I was never extremely thin. I guess my bone structure is a bit big so no matter how much I diet, I still look big.
Just this year, around May 2015, lost my appetite to eat due to virus for a month that I lost 15 pounds. Was able to put it off and my current weight is now 145 pounds. I'm still 25 pounds overweight and trying my best to keep some more off.
Here's crossing my fingers.

Hi bostonphil,
You already have the solutIon to your problem. As one gets older, one's metabolic rate tends to slow down. In other words one is not burning as much calories as one consumes. So where does the excess calories end up as? They are stored in the form of fat. You are right that you must eat less and exercise more. But there's another ingredient which you must have before you succeed in your quest to lose weight and that is strong determination or will power without which your effort to lose weight will amount to nothing. So work on your will power first and you'll see results. Have a nice day.

Yes, my slowed down metabolism is the biggest problem. When I was young, I ate as much as I do now but never put on a pound. Now, everything turns to fat.
Is there anything I can take that will help my metabolism speed up?

They say that the amount of food we eat (calorie) should be directly parallel to the amount of effort we put in our daily exercise. Sounds ideal, but that's what I do now, if i eat a lot during the day, I make it sure, to double my time in exercise, but not too strenous, just enough. For example, if I have my usual 30 minutes walk, i usually add 15 to 30 minutes more of my time. There is no secret recipe for weight management, I believe, but discipline on things. You may consult your doctor or dietician for further assessment. Good luck to all of us. Thanks

Thanks for posting this discussion. Well i can understand you problem as i have also gone through the same situation as well. i was very lean and skinny during my childhood days and subsequently gained weight like anything. I took up a sport like running, playing tennis and that really helped. I lost weight in quick succession and also i was indulged in morning and evening walk and they also worked wonders for me.
What say?

You have reminded me that I used to dance when younger. i took both ballet and jazz. I also walked about 10 miles every day and I walked fast. That probably helped keep me thin. Now I walk about two miles every day but ever so slowly. I joined the Y to use the machines. I like them but getting to the Y is difficult for me. I am just lazy. That's all.

I do not know if I could handle 8 glasses of water a day. I know that fruits and veggies are good for you but I also love other foods. I love food. That is one of my big problems.

I know what you are saying is correct but I am lazy and I love food. I eat too much. That's a problem and I love a lot of the wrong foods. Another problem. It would probably help if I would get to the Y more often. Once I get there, I love being there but getting there is the problem. I hate exercising but I like the machines at the Y. That is among the reasons that I joined.

When you say preparations already available in the marketplace, what are you referring to?
I know that i need to exercise which is something I am bad at doing. I am trying to eat lighter and healthier but it is not easy.
