Antidepressants

I had a severe depression in 2005 and I started taking antidepressants at that time. After half a year I told my psychiatrist that I would like to quit them. I didn't want to become dependent on them and I felt that I was doing much better, so I thought that it would be fine to quit them.
My psychiatrist was a little skeptical, but he said: "Okay if that is what you want, we will try it" I quit them, and I became extremely depressed again. It was a shock that the depression returned because I thought that I was doing so much better. My psychiatrist told me to take the antidepressents again and I did what he said because I wanted to get rid of the depression.
Since that time I have taken antidepressants every day. The antidepressants keep the depressions down, but they don't remove them completely.
Do you take antidepressants? Or did you take antidepressants in the past?

I heard only bad things about depressants. I have depression but I do not take such pills. I try to control my depression naturally. I know it's hard but I do not want to become addictive. If the depression is not too severe (my case I think) it can be diminished in time (I hope!) by finding out other solution to depression than antidepressants. I'm still searching...

Sometimes it is possible get to rid of a depression without medicine. I had my first depression in 1998 and at that time I didn't know that it was a depression and I didn't get any antidepressants or any other kinds of treatment. After some months the depression disappeared, but it wasn't a very severe depression and I think that also had something to do with the fact that I wasn't able to get through the depression without medicine. In 2005 when I had a very severe depression I wouldn't have been able to do the same thing and I needed the antidepressants. I understand what you mean when you say that you don't want to get addicted to the antipressants, I used to think that way too, but unfortunately I have become addicted to them today.

I see what you mean. But I believe all medical problems have a cure given by God in the surrounding nature. We just have to find it out. We must not forget that natural substances that cure health problems have been imitated by pharmaceutic industry. So I trust there must be also something for depression. On the other hand, there is always something in our lives that triggers depression so we must eliminate this. I'm still searching...

That sounds really bad. I have also taken medicine that made me tremble. It was a different kind of medicine (not the one that I take at the moment) but I found it hard to control my hands because I was trembling so much. Fortunately my current medicine doesn't have that kind of side effects, but there are other side effects that I would like to get rid up liked the tiredness and the constant hunger which makes me eat much more than I did before I started taking the antidepressants.

Thank you. Yes, I also think that my depression will be much worse if I don't take them. I clearly remember what happened in the past when I tried to quit them. It was a very bad experience and my depression returned. I don't like the idea of depending on them and I don't like the side effects, but on the other hand I know that they help me.

I haven't been on antidepressants nearly as long as anyone who's shared before me. I started January of this year, so that's about 10 months. It was like a slow crawl back up from the deepest pit of despair. At first I didn't think the medicine was making any difference, but now that I've been on them the better part of a year I can see that it's helped tremendously. I had a weekend where my pills ran out and I was thinking to myself that it would be okay if I just waited until Monday to get it refilled. I had a total breakdown.
I don't want to take antidepressants for the rest of my life, but my psychiatrist has told me it is possible that I may struggle with depression for the rest of my life, because depression does tend to be a long-term illness. I tell myself that for now, I'm going to take them every day. I hope that in the future I will be able to ween myself off of them, but I'll think about that in the future when I'm hopefully further along in my road to recovery.

I have experienced the same thing. I ran out of medicine just before the weekend. I didn't have time to ask for a new prescription before the clinic closed and I thought that it would be okay to wait. Bad idea! I started feeling really depressed, vulnerable, anxious etc and since that time I learned to make sure that I always have enough antidepressants in my home, because I don't want to experience that situation again. I have taken antidepressants for 7 years now. When I started I didn't really know what to expect, but I must say that they have helped me a lot, and I am able to work and live a "normal" life today.

I agree with the thing that you say about addiction. It is easy to become addicted to the antidepressants and that it one of the reasons why I tried to quit them after half a year. I didn't want to get addicted to them, but now I have been taking them for 7 years and I have become addicted to them, because I feel terrible if I skip them just for a few days. It is also true that they can be harmful to the body (I got very ill from the side effects in the past) but I think that you are caught between the devil and the deep blue sea. Antidepressants are not a positive thing for our bodies but on the other hand the depressions that you experience without the antidepressants are also bad.

I have a friend who takes those anti-depressant medicines regularly. She took it everytime she feels down. I know that it is therapeutic if prescribed by a doctor, in her case, she took the medicine over the counter on a friend's owned pharmacy. I hope she can see now a doctor becasue it may be detrimental to her for the effects of taking those medicines without any consultation. I hope you get well in time. Thanks

Thank you. I also think that it would be a very good idea if your friend discussed her situation with a doctor, because it can be dangerous to take that kind of medication without consulting a doctor first. One of my friends once asked me to give her some of my antidepressants because she didn't have a prescription, but I said no and told her that she had to discuss it with her doctor. It could be dangerous to take my antidepressants, because she was already taking other kinds of medicine and some kinds of medicine can't be combined. Only a doctor would be able to advice her about that.

I was diagnozed with clinical depression back in 2002, was put on antidepressants different ones, all had severe side affects on me and put me off taking them and I refused point blank when after visiting doctors, pyschiatrists that was all they were prepared to offer me. I have been in an out of counseling and last June I finally broke down, I couldn't take it any more I asked for help, antidepressants, I was fortunate in that my GP found ones that suited me, however the side affects started to interfere with my day to day life and I was in bed more than I was up and about, I was on venlafaxine, then early this year I was switched to Mirtazapine and I have to say these work! No side affects or none that I notice and I feel so much better I am able to go to the gym 3 times a week and I can cope with life albeit I have to live for today, not tomorrow. I have asked the GP if I can be on them indefinitely and she said yes, I don't envisage coming off them, I don't want to, I know what life is like without them, even if I have to take them for the rest of my life that doesn't worry me. Life without antidepressants is a life of hell and one I don't want to live in. I am likely to self harm again if I came off them. They are my sanity in this cr*p world. Thank you for listening.

Thanks for sharing your story. I think that it is great that you don't experience any side effects from Mirtazapin. I take Mirtazapin as well and they make tired and hungry, but I would still say that they are the best ones I have tried. They keep my depression down and the side effects aren't that bad compared to some of the other side effects that I have experienced when I took other kinds of antidepressants. I understand what you mean when you say that you don't want to live without them. I feel terrible if I don't take my medicine for a few days (if I run out of pills or something like that) I get sad, irritable, anxious, vulnerable etc without them. It is a little scary to experience the difference that they make.

I also quit and it felt so bad like I was out of breathing and hell is dragging me down. I know I can do it before I was quitting and nothing happens until I ate back the meds where my mom told me, I suffer this. Now I rely on the meds so much that if I forgotten to eat them, I will eat back the next day. But what you can do is cut the meds smaller portion, if one tablet you can minimize it to quarter. This is what I do. I don't plan to quit my meds because it gives me good feeling, not depressed which makes me don't want to get on to do the things.

I recognize the feelings you described. I quit because I thought that I was able to live without the antidepressants, but when I was wrong because because I felt really terrible when I quit and I realized that it wasn't a good idea. Since that time I have taken antidepressants regularly. I don't like the idea of depending on them, but I find it hard to live without them. I like the thing you wrote about minimazing the dosis, I think that would be more realistic than quitting completely. At the moment I take 3 different kinds of antidepressants.

hi porcospino,
Well I don't take anti depressants pills but I read that it has a bad effect in your health if you are taking it for a long time if you think you don't need it maybe you can stop taking it or consult your doctor.
If you are depress try to look at the brighter side of your life
happy mylotting

I think that the antidepressants are both good and bad. They help me in my daily life and that it is the postive thing about them, but the negative things are the bad affects on my heath like you mentioned. I would like to avoid the side effects, because I get very tired and I have also gained weight since I started taking them. I hope that I will be able to quit them one day.

Don't quit antidepressants all a sudden. It can badly affect you in many ways. Just consult your physician to try out some easy way. You can start Yoga and move to such a place where you can feel more charming and happiness that can help you to decrease the doge percentage dramatically and slowly you may quit them.

Everybody had a depresion. It depends of each one how to overcome it. I didn't take antidepressants and I hope I don't need them. When I was in a deep depresion I try to make many things which distracting me. More, my friends help me very much. It's very dangerous to play with this kind of disease.

I am happy to hear that you have friends who can help you when you are depressed. That is a big help, it is hard to go through the struggle on your own. I have friends who have depressions as well and we are good at helping eachother. My husband is also very supportive and I think that I am very lucky to have him. In the periods where I don't have much energy he helps me and he takes care of the practical things.
