This new girl is only 15 and I take this into consideration. But it wasn't my first job when I was 15, so I cant relate all the way. You can tell she lacking responsibility, and just plain knowledge. I asked her to sweep the floors (all the floors), and she sweeps one corner says she is done. I then asked if she did ALL the floors and walked around pointing at what I meant (btw she didnt do it, yet said she did). I ended up going around doing it, then she screwed up an order (she over charged a customer $6), honest mistake, and I'm not balming this on her age. BUT when I go counting the tillw hen we closed the till money wise was short $116, the interac (minus the $6 she over charged) was short $15.07. I had to stay an hour after my shift to fix evreything, and it didnt all balance (I couldnt find the money). The manager has nothing but good things to say about this girl, and saying how good she is compared to the other teenager we hired. I will admit that, but mybe it's the lack of work experience and life in general.

hi Ricki it sounds like she needs to learn prices and learn to charge right as somehow she screwed up on the money there fifteen dollars is fifteen dollars. she needs to be shown how to make change.

The register does most of that now Hatley. I will admit I am bad with math and so I try to make sure I rely completely on the computer and not mess up when entering something. If I do I call someone from customer service over to assist me so I know I'm giving the customer back their change right, etc. Still, I think the girl needs to work on her nervousness and just concentrating on one customer at a time. I remember being nervous when I first started out on my first cashiering job and with so many people in line sometimes it can be overwhelming. She needs to learn to take a deep breath, ignore everyone else, and not be afraid to ask for help.

Modern registers show the amount of change due, but the cashier still needs to be able to count out change properly. $116 is a huge amount to be short when the till is counted down! Any of the stores I've worked at would've fired me on the spot for that sort of shortage.

I agree, most computers will do it, unless you dont punch it in right. But I can see a few mistakes, but $116 is a lot. Also, the fact she can't follow basic directions.

OMG she sound like me , I am like that and I was not aware of how inexperience I was until I start college . I think she will learn if she wants to, after one mistake and you show her she should pick up fine . The manager is not aware of what she doing since you are taking care of things for her but keep her under your wings she will learn if you continue to guide her .

I remember when I started my first job I kind of wanted to be lazy on somethings. I'm not counting the job I had for four days before I decided it was my senior year and I needed to concentrate on that better... I do remember that the whole cashiering thing was scary to me and I'd have rather of not done that, and I remember messing up and feeling so bad. I also remember trying to skimp on chores. Now I love to do chores but that's a side thing. Hopefully this girl will get better with experience, but she may also need to work on her nervousness. I know that when you have a long line behind you it can be a bit overwhelming. I've learned to ignore everyone BUT the person I am helping at that moment.

MY 3-yr-old son knows how to sweep the floor and this teenager when ask to sweep the floor was just sweeping the corner! Age doesn't matter here but laziness and irresponsibility does. I do have a computer shop business and before I hired someone to take care of it. Do cashiering, cleaning and everything 'coz I know I can do more than this maintenance task and earn more but it ended up to do the job alone than having someone with you who can't do even the simple task assigned. Not to mention shortages and sometimes she gives a customer 600 minutes instead of 60 minutes. Can't imagine!

At 15 years old, this girl still has a lot to learn, but a job as simple as sweeping the floors should not be beyond her capabilities. Laziness will get her nowhere. On the other hand, she does need to learn how to count, how to charge correctly, and how to make change. Having a till down by $116 is insane! That's a lot of money that's missing! Unless she learns quickly, you may be losing a lot more money in the near future. She may be better than the last teenager you guys hired, but you need to point out to your manager how much money her till was down by, and maybe check her till a few times a day to make sure she's not screwing up too badly.
