When I was a young kid I used to watch cartoons just as kids do nowadays. But i feel there is a key difference. Cartoons twenty years back used to be drawn so much more beautifully and were more aesthetically pleasing than those that are drawn (or computer generated) nowadays. Obviously I am not generalizing but msot cartoons of this day and age are so simplistic or simply ugly when it comes to facial features. Anotehr key difference is the fact that cartoons used to give a small message or some food for thought. Nowadays most cartoons are not based on that essence. Have you noticed these differences?

Bugs Bunny - Bugs Bunny eating a carrot
I am not quite sure about this, I find it very difficult to measure the facial expression of a cartoon character that I was watching over 50 years ago with the current cartoons. There are only a select few characters who have survived for a couple of decades or more, and it was inevitable that they would change over the years. One definite improvement nowadays is the versatility of cartoons, with studios such as Pixar taking us into a totally new level. If my parents could see some of todays cartoons they would be totally amazed at the reality compared to earlier works.

I agree with you about the Pixar cartoons. They are of good quality. However I do miss the hand drawn cartoons of the past.

Not only that, we have today's "live action" of yesterday's cartoons - such as Scooby-Doo, the Flintstones, not to mention all the super heroes who are now in live action form. Pixar is wonderful, though! Who doesn't love the Toy Story "toons"?

Yes they have, with the help of computers. many cartoons are done now only by computers. Where in years past they were done by photos or pictures. Have a great weekend there.

Computer generated cartoons are not all bad, but some of them are rather haphazard in the way the graphics and characters are generated. A key difference lies in the Mickey Mouse cartoons for example. Once we noticed that shadows do not exist in the new version and the topics are so void.

I think that they have changed from when I was a kid and used to watch cartoons. I can remember that every cartoon had a message about treating people right and what not. Now the cartoons that they have out don't have a message at all and if they do have a message its not one that I want my kids to know about. I can remember watching G.I. Joe and at the end of the cartoon they would teach you something and end it with "and knowing is half the battle" I wish that they had more cartoons like that now a days. I am not sure about the drawing of them as it seems like they actually have more details today than they did when I was a kid and are better to look at as far as that goes but they are lacking in the messages that they provide to kids now.

Ted Turner's "Captain Planet" did likewise - with environmental messages at the end of every episode. Of course, my favorite character was his evil twin, Captain Pollution...lol.

This is true, there was a greater concern about the fact that cartoons would play a part in the development of children. Nowadays the only important factor is the amount of money that can be earned.

Did you know that the original cartoons where created for adults only? It wasnt untill they were out for a little while that the creaters realized cartoons were appealing to children.. That is when Walt Disney and other creaters created characters that were geared to children.. You didnt see many cartoons for adults only.. Now in the last ten years or so cartoons are made for adults and cartoons.. And unless you actual sit down and watch tv with your child there is a possiblity that they are watching cartoons that they shouldnt watch.. Granted there may of been cartoons for either adults or children during the off times they were not so popular..

I do notice that many of the cartoons that come out today are not nearly as pleasing to the eye as cartoons that I used to watch when I was a little girl were. In addition to that, I have also noticed that there is not as many cartoons available today as there were when I was young. You see, one of my fondest memories from when I was a little girl is getting up early on Saturday mornings and watching cartoons with my brother and sister while we let our parents sleep in. That simply isn't an option today.

My children grew up watching more Japanese anime than American cartoons. Anime seems more fluid and expressive somehow. Even today, they are both in to it, although they are young adults. I enjoy it, too. Back in my day - when dinosaurs roamed the earth haha! we had The Flintstones - who weren't exactly a sign of beauty - and Bugs Bunny, Road Runner, Tweety Bird, Felix the Cat and the Archies (when I was a teen). Mostly a bunch of animals. That includes the Archies...lol.

I also noticed the difference. Actually I just did when one morning I watched a cartoon with my daughter. And I realized that there was really a big difference, I even told her. I even said to my daughter, that cartoons before are more fun and kids can learn good moral with cartoons. But nowadays, there are cartoons that really needs parental guidance.

Yes I have noticed, it's mostly just flaunting visual effects with cartoon nowadays, the stories are cliche, recycled and the music is not as good. The old ones make use of classical music and the hand drawn art is better! Check out hayao miyazaki, most of his films are hand drawn i think and does not rely too much on computers, you will see it's much more beautiful.

One obvious difference I observe is there's a lot more cartoons now than in the past. And some cartoons are not meant for children, but for young at heart. Also a lot of these cartoons are low budgeted and you can see them from the artistry of the cartoon characters and story line. But there's still a lot of cartoons around today that I find beneficial to children. Dora the explorer is one example, it's my daughter's favorite.

My mom always say that the cartoons now the characters always seem angry and are always shouting. Not just the cartoons but toes shows on nickelodeon and Disney too. She thinks they were much nicer back then when me and my sister use to watch. I slightly agree cause I love me some family guy lol. How raw it is and not afraid to break boundaries lol
