How Much Do You Tip?Are You a Good Tipper?

Are you a good tipper? Just read this article on tipping: http://shine.yahoo.com/financially-fit/common-tipping-mistakes-221500121.html (NOT a referral link.) I'm not so sure I agree with the recommended amounts for tips listed in this article but I do believe in rewarding those in service positions who go above and beyond their assigned duties to provide me with an excellent consumer experience. Tipping is purely subjective for which their is no set formula. Suggestions like the ones listed in this article are general guidelines and should not be taken as gospel. I fully support tipping but think that it should be done realistically based on one's means. If you have it and more to spare, tip away; but if you don't, be prudent. Giving the store away doesn't do anyone any good; modest money management will provide a storehouse of funds that can be shared by all over a much greater span of time. Negative cashflow effects us all; I am sure that those being tipped would rather get something rather than nothing at all. Always try to be kind to those who treat you well as a consumer, your small act of kindness just might brighten someone's day. So are you a good tipper or a wise tipper?

For me it often depends on the situation. Where I am at, who I am with, the type of Service I get, and of course how much extra money I have. There are places I know I will always get good Service especially when it is a smaller Mom and Pop type establishment and then I tend to tip better if I can. But personally not all people deserve good tips so I let my better judgement and finances for that week decide.

At least you dine with those who are willing to tip others for providing good service and that is a good thing.

Aabuda I am also agree with you not use any tip or not like to give the tip to anyone. I feel first I should do better than giving the tips to others.

I don't agree with this article either. I agree that above and beyond or a freebie does deserve a tip. To me a tip is a reward. If they aren't friendly and go beyond the call of duty I don't tip. I was in customer service for thirty years and I never got a tip! And I don't think that is fair. A waitress is a representative of the company she works for just like I was. What's the difference? And, if I have a voucher or gift card and am using it is probably because I am broke and don't have the money otherwise. So to say in this article that we still should tip the usual amount is rediculous to me. If i can afford to tip why am I using the voucher or card? I agree with the something rather than nothing theory too. I am a wise tipper.

Here, here! celticeagle, I understand your point of view; you are truly a wise tipper. You are a real person who lives in the real world and you've still got heart. The one point I'd like to differ with you is regarding you never having gotten a tip; that may be so but you received much good in your own life for making a difference in the lives of those you served. Keep this knowledge and know that you are still appreciated.

Still appreciated, huh? That's nice of you to say. It felt good to help people and they were thankful but no real tips money wise. I always enjoyed my job.

Hi, You are right. Our small act of kindness just might brighten someone's day. I always give tip for providing good service. I don't know the percentage. I give the tip as per the quality of the service provided. I think I am a wise tipper.

I always try to tip 10% here in Mexico. With lots of people short of money here, Im sure most people are happy getting that. Its funny I see many here you dont tip anything.

I tend to agree more on tipping based upon what you can afford. I mean there are a lot of high prices right now. The economy is tight. If a server goes above and beyond then I definitely make sure I leave a tip. If the service was poor or mediocre I do not feel that I have to give a tip. The tip should be for going above and beyond rather than just the basic level of service in my opinion. I do think the standards of tipping have gotten way out of control. I mean it is like the standard tip is 20% of the bill. That is high. I agree with the 10%, and I do try to generally give at least 10% for a tip. Personally, I feel 15 - 20% I better have received outstanding attention and service.

mariaperalta, I know lots of people do not feel obligated to tip at all, but like you, I do try to tip at least 10% for good service. If the service was great, I try to tip more. We should not take advantage of others to satify our greed, it's bad karma. aireanna18, my views on tipping are very close to yours; if I tip more that 10%, it is for exceptionally good service. Good deeds should not go unrewarded.
