Jilin meteorite

Jilin meteorite - The sample of the Jilin meteorite in the collection here in Australia.
It lives mostly in store, waiting.
It weighs 0.7 grams. This meteorite is a chondrite type, meaning it contains chondrules, or small mineral balls.

Hi folks, I haven't been in for ages, but, the other day, stuck my nose in and started chatting. Well, I answered a fellow from China, Mr. Xinyu100, and he comes from Jilin province. Jilin is famous in circles I hang out in for a very interesting reason. A few tonnes of solid rock fell out of the sky and landed in peoples yards with a great bang and crash in mid afternoon March 8, 1976. The largest piece is 1.77 tonnes. This is the largest surviving stone meteorite on Earth. There are metal meteorites that are larger because they don't erode as quickly. When I came across the chance to obtain a small sample of this stone, I of course jumped. It is only 0.7 grams, but it still tells a lot of stories. If I am ever fortunate enough to visit China, I would like to visit the Jilin meteorite museum.

Thanks a ton for sharing this discussion. Well glad to know about the Jilin meteorite museum and it would be exciting to see how that stone meteorite actually looks like. i think u should definitely give a visit to Jilin so as to to discover about the meteorite that u have interest to know more about. Even here in my city some of the meteorites have been preserved in a museum and i got the privilege to see them. What say?

Jilin meteorite metal flakes - This image shows the light reflecting from metal flakes visible on the cut face of the Jilin meteorite.
Hi, thank you for your comment, I am interested to know what the museum is that you have visited, perhaps they have some photos of their collection online, and I can look at them too. Here is a photo close up of the inside of the Jilin meteorite, the light is reflecting off metal flakes on a cut face on the stone. The metal is very very hard, and tools were sometimes made from large metal meteorites when found, large metal meteorites have the similar hard alloy of Iron and Nickel, there are two kinds of the Iron Nickel alloys usually. The Jilin meteorite is a stone meteorite containing metal flakes. The Jilin meteorite is also a chondrite type of meteorite, because it has small spheres of a different mineral in it.
