Seeing Owl is not inauspicious

India
October 23, 2012 3:50am CST
Many here in India consider an owl as inauspicious, hearing cawing sound of an owl scare many, if an owl sits on a tree near you, or on your roof is supposed to bring death of a family member living in that house. One of my renters came to me this morning, she said; her daughter in law, who is pregnant, saw an owl sitting on the drumstick tree which is there in her back yard. I told her no bird, animal is inauspicious; god has created them; it is some priests who say about this inauspicious stuff; so that if you run to them, they will ask you to perform puja and give them donation in form of cash/gold etc. I also told her, this tree has ‘ghosts’, they never harmed you till this date. Moreover owl is carrier of Goddess ‘Lakshmi’; you can see an owl near her feet always; so owl is auspicious in my opinion. She was convinced, I am happy; she thought her daughter in law might abort and lose the baby. So friends what is your opinion, are owl, cats particularly black cats inauspicious? Any other bird, animals like crows, parrots, snakes, red colored crawling insects that look like a ball of velvet that we see are inauspicious or auspicious? Please share your views and comments. Thanks in advance. Professor ‘Bhuwan’. . Cheers have a lucky day ahead. October 23, 2012

Hi Professor, We call it superstition. There are lot of superstitious people, especially those that live in areas where there is lots of folklore. In a way, I think that people who are so wrapped up in superstition and fear of regular animals are just uneducated and ignorant of what is real and what is made up. From what you have said, it sounds like the priests tell people this to instill fear in them to get their money. That is a very bad thing to do to people who don’t know they are being taken advantage of, in my opinion. Around Halloween, people are encouraged to keep their cats, especially black cats, inside because they are often killed just for the fun of it. There are some evil people who would actually think of doing such things to innocent animals.

My beautiful black cat is never happy when we make her stay in. We also keep all of our animals in during the Independence celebration. I do not know why anyone would want to hurt innocent animals or fear them, but they do.

namaskar sir Quite right. All the species are creations of Lord and as such it is just our superstition which stems from someone's personal opinion or even as you say priests. In my family and friends circle, there are people who believe the Black Cats or even the owls as inauspicious. Some even believe wailing of dogs in the night to be inauspicious. Though the white owl is considered as being auspicious. Personally, I dont believe any one of the above as inauspicious. And I have felt (based on my experiences) that the wailing of dogs in the night has always been a kind of warning to me of something bad to happen that day - and now, I dont feel them as inauspicious instead as i said, I take it as a fore-warning for me.

I also agree that different creatures in nature cannot be considered lucky and unlucky. It is just the combination of events good and bad that affects different beings.

I know that there are many people that are very superstitious when it comes to some kinds of animals. However, I am not one of those people. The main one that I've heard about throughout my life is that a bird in your home means that a family member is going to die. However, there have been birds in our house twice in the time that we've lived here and we've not have anyone in our family to pass away. I think it is just silly to be such a superstitious person.

I do not find any creation to be inauspicious or bad luck as some would say. There have always been myths about pregnancy and luck and if all this stuff was true we would not have such a huge human race. All the inauspicious things would have killed us out already.

Hello Professor. In our culture, if you see a crow somewhere near the house, it is considered to be inausticious while a magpie is considered to bring something auspicious to the family. That is to say, when something bad happens, a crow is seen while a magpie is seen when something good is to happen. Thanks for sharing the discussion, Professor.

People are misled into believing the auspiciousness or not of animals, objects and even human beings. And even those who are learned and educated enough believe in such things. And some people make money at their cost.

All what you have mentioned in your blog about owl is what Indian people do think and considered owl sound is bad and I have seen people throw the stone in owl direction so that owl fly away not only this some people even give the bad words thinking that (This is what older people have told them to do)by doing so owl will go away from their home. Whether to believe or not is one choice, but truly speaking majority of the people I have seen believing in such things.

Prof, i too hear about this kind of superstitious belief, but i don't have faith with them as well as never give importance to them. I don't consider owl and cat as auspicious things. They are one among the god's creatures.

Thanks sir,for this interesting discussion.Anyway, considering something bird, animal or insect as inauspicious has no sense because, the places we are living might have been forests long back.During which many birds and animals which are so far called inauspicious might have been there here.People who believe like this will not think about all these....Okay god is the creator of all the things on earth then why is this inequality found in his creation?it's just humans who made all these...OK.Good luck.
