Sleep is a natural part of every individual's life. We spend about one-third of our lives asleep. Sleep is not just something to fill time when a person is inactive. Sleep is a required activity, not an option. we all recognize and feel the need to sleep. After sleeping, we recognize changes that have occured, as we feel rested and more alert. Sleep must be required for survival. Rats deprived of sleep will die within two or three weeks. Problem sleepiness may be assosciated with difficulty concentrations, stress, memory lapses, loss of energy, fatigue and emotional instability. Due to lack of sleep, it may cause accidents while driving. Sleep disorders can cause problem sleepiness. Lifestyle factors include not getting enough sleep, having an irregular sleep schedule, and using alcohol (or) certain medications. Of the more than 70 known sleep disorders, the most common are obstructive sleep apnea, insomnia, narcolepsy and restless legs syndrome. Large number of individuals suffering from these sleep disorders are unaware of- and have not been diagnosed (or) treated for their disorder. Most people report problems that occured due to lack of sleep are depression, heart problems, lack of immunity, obesity, infertility in women.

Thanks a ton for posting this discussion. Yes u are absolutely right, sleep is one of the most essential habits that a person should have in order to have a proper lifestyle and living. Without sleep we are actually depriving our body from taking rest and rather straining it to work hard. So without proper sleep, we will have a hell lot of problems that might be so dangerous in the long run that might completely ruin our life. So it is advisable to have a good sound sleep. What say?

I think that far too many people take their health for granted, and they don't realise just how much of an impact their amount of sleep can have on that overall health. People just think that they can burn the candle at both ends, but they should get around eight hours of sleep per night and that is the healthiest amount that they can have. Too much sleep can be just as bad as too little, and people will start to find that they're not as alert during the day and this means that they might start to make mistakes in tasks that they would normally have been absolutely fine with. I don't think that anyone realises until it affects them negatively, and it is a shame that it often has to come to that.

Sleep is what I like to call a necessary evil. It's been well established that it is an essential element for survival, and for long term health and sanity. Yet, there are many times where we tend to take a lot of short cuts for our sleep schedule. It is unfair to ourselves, where we are going to try and cut ourselves out of a lot. The health problems are vast. Of course, the problems with our own personal relationships can be just as bad. There are times where we tend to get short, and thus strain the actual interpersonal interactions. Adding that to the health problems that have been underlined, and it is just one huge loop. Many of think ourselves to be above sleep, but sadly it becomes obvious that we need it to survive and thrive.

Sleep is very important as it is the time when our body starts its self-repair. We also need it to boost up our immune system and to keep those anti-bodies in tip top shape. THat is why most people weakened by sickness are prescribed bed rest so their bodies can recover sooner. As for mental health, I also believe that sleep provides the much needed rest of our ever busy brains or minds. You are right in saying it is a natural and important part of our lives. Even animals get their own doses of sleep.
