Alliterations work well, as do puns and general wordplay.
But to be honest, I don't know if there are "tips" to create a catchy headline in the context you're looking for. It'd be like creating a YouTube video that wound up with a million views. How do you do it?
You don't do it. Other people do it for you.
You're playing to an audience, and you never know what's going to take off.
For all the praise about how great and delicious the McRib is, it obviously isn't too great, or else McDonald's would have it on the menu full time.
Not every King or Grisham book catches on enough to be turned into a crappy movie.
I think the best tip is in the title of your discussion -- "Catchy."
Think about what's catchy to you.
Are you a Meat Loaf fan? Even if not, you might be able to sing along with the chorus: "I would do anything for love! But I won't do that!" But who knows the words of the song beyond that?
Something that's catchy is easy to remember, easy to say, and fun.

Hi,
What interest people is what makes a catchy headline. I have studied lots of news items and some of them don't deal with mundane but make them look like out of this world. There's a big difference between saying "Washing Machine Busted" and "Husband Go Freak Over a Busted Washing Machine."
Human interest is what makes it, just make sure you doesn't twist the truth for its own sake.

rog0322, you got a point. Human Interest is what makes a headline catchy. Yes, it's a challenge to keep the headlines justifying the facts.

Ya know, that has been one of my trials here.
I totally agree that a good title will get reads (along with picking a subject that will get a lot of views.)
I have sometimes stopped at the end of a discussion and gone back and changed the title, sometimes it comes to me right off, and sometimes I'll get the discussion all written and sit there staring at the subject wondering what to say...
I think I've done pretty good over the years I've been here, but there are some that just totally leave me wondering if anyone will read it.

Writing a catchy title doesn't really have to do with the content initially, it has to do with your thought. I have noticed that writing itself has to do with an individuals love for writing. What we reflect on what we, writers have written has to do with our state of mind.
Whether we are being positive or negative at a certain time when we write also matters because our articles direction takes on our line of thoughts, likewise our titles. Most times if I can't think of a title before starting the article, I write first then when editing, a perfect title comes to mind due to the direction of the article or its point of view.

Hi george! I am glad to know about this thing! Sometimes I also notice this even in the television news. You will be interested to watch the whole story because of the headline.
Perhaps I can attract more response if the headline is catchy. But of course, the content should be interesting also. Thank you for sharing this information with us.
Have a nice day!

As of now, I am writing articles for a Catholic community where I am active right now. And when I look and think for a great title for the articles that I wrote, I sometimes ask for suggestions for my friends who also have the passion to write. And the other methods that I use is that I read a book. Because when I read a book, my imagination is working. And when my imagination is working, that is when I manage to think of a great title for my article
