Can Aspartame really cause cancer?

I've heard that the sweetener aspartame can cause cancer. It is believed so because the body is unable to metabolize the product. It worries me because my father is diabetic and he uses aspartame to sweeten his coffee. He drinks coffee at least 2-3 times a day. If indeed it can cause cancer, it would pose a dangerous threat to my fathers health.

Well, believe it or not Aspartame has been in use for a long time. It is in mostly every diet soda on the market, it is every equal packet as well. Equal is Aspartame. They are starting to use more and more Splenda. Splenda is actually sugar but the molecular structure is changed so that the body does not absorb the sugar. And what happens in that some people get stomach cramps and wind up in the bathroom as a result. In essence it goes right through you. I never put any sweetener in my coffee. I like it black. But I do drink diet coke with equal and Splenda. I have never seen any cases like this. I even asked my Endocrinologist about it and he looked at me and said, all the years I have been drinking diet soda and being a doctor I have never seen any such case as that yet. So he also told me, if you want diet coke, go ahead and drink it.

I used to work doing translations for a Sugar Institute and some of the articles I had to translate were about the negative effects of aspartame compared to sugar. I guess they were biased, but I have alsoI have heard about it from other sources too.
