Do you want to handle a team, or do you prefer to be a team member?

I am contended being a member of our team in our workplace. I was offered several times to handle sub-groups in our team, but I really don't like handling people that much. It's not that I don't have leadership skills. I have experienced before in college to be the head of our organization. It's just that I don't think I can balance administrative tasks with my work in our office. How about you, do you prefer to be the leader? Or would you rather be a member of your team?

I prefer to be a member of the team, but in my school I work as a teaching group leader of the subject we teach. To be a leader, you have more responsibilities. So I prefer to be a member only. This way I don't have to be held with so many responsibilities. Thanks for the discussion, arystine.

Thanks for the response. I also do not want to be tied up with additional responsibilities. That's why I prefer to be a team member. :)

This is something that I am having to think about a lot at the moment because I am considering what career I would like to go into. I think that I am actually a lot better at leading a team than I am at being a member of that team. I am the type of person who is able to get good results from people but I can get along with them and have a bit of a laugh at the same time, which is something that I think is very important at work because people don't work at their best if they are stressed about deadlines or worried about what the reaction of their manager is going to be.

Given a choice, I would always just want to be a team member. Unfortunately, one thing I couldn't stand is poor or lack of leadership. I've been lucky enough to be led by great people career-wise. So when I'm put into a group and I see that leadership is lacking, I almost always step up. Then I'd be pegged into a leadership role. I guess it isn't too bad as I'm sure it has helped me in my career.

I really have to take my hat off and salute those who are leaders of a team. It might appear to be easy, but even when managing a small group, it can be rather tiring and taxing. I have tried my hand at the old leadership role. I wouldn’t go so far to say that I am hopeless at it. But it is just not something that I found myself jumping for joy and moving forward with both arms swinging to do. So yeah, I’m better at being a contributing member of a team, than the person who just makes it all work. In the end, there are born leaders. It is a really frustrating job, as if everything goes wrong, it’s the team leader that gets chewed out. Even if they tried their best to right the ship, and if everything goes right, well so what, you were just trying to do your job. I really admire those who lead the team, and do so successfully.

Thanks for the response. Likewise, I admire natural born leaders. :) it's not all glory and status. It's big responsibility.

Hello arystine! :) I don't think I am a leader type. I can say I can be a better member than a leader itself. For me, I find it hard to lead cause I am just a low-profile person. I don't like leading too much specially if I am not good with such things on what should I do. If I know what to do, then I can teach others, but not lead... It's a different thing. Glad that you can become a leader of your own!

I would prefer to be a member of our team. Its because handling members is so difficult. Besides, I am loyal when it comes to following instruction, but still, it depends on situation.

I would like to be a member of a team as I dont have wit, energy, smartness enough to lead a team. There is no stress in being a member. If I can do, I would do more than a team leader, being a member of a team.
