Unusual trick or treat... treat

I went trick or treating with the kids tonight for a lil while. One house let my daughter not only pick a piece of candy but gave her a Nancy Drew novel too. I thought that was awful nice and unusual. There was also a house that gave out nickels to the kids which I had not seen anyone give out change since I was a kid. Have you ever gotten an unusual treat when out trick or treating yourself or with your kids?

A nickel doesn't get much these days.. at least when we were kids we could buy a piece of candy with it. So.. how come you guys were trick or treating tonight? We don't go until Wednesday (if the storm is going to allow it.. everyone's saying it's gonna be cancelled cuz of the hurricane).

Yes a nickel doesn't get you much but it was still a surprise to see money instead of candy or some other lil novelty. Many areas here do it the Saturday or Sunday before Halloween. The IL's invited the kids over by them they went a few blocks and then handed out candy. Then on the way home stopped to pick up pumpkins my Aunt had for us and did more by her house since alot more participate by her. Then Dad will take them on Wed!

Hi Snuggle, I have heard of giving nickels in the trick or treat bags...I remember a few years ago there were people putting razor blades in fruit that they gave out for holloween so may people elected to giving money in the trick or treat bag because parents was afraid of accepting any fruit...and it was dangereous... My children are grown and my grandchildren don't even go trick or treating any more... BUT I hope you had fun...and nickles just like pennies will make dollars....LOL

I think that sort of thing was when I was a kid in the 80's we used to have the option of taking your candy to the hospital to have things x-rayed and you never took anything that wasn't in a package from a manufacturer so no zip bags of loose whatever or fruit. Well they didn't get enough nickels to make a dollar maybe 50 cent between the three of them. But hey when I can get them to help out around here I pay them with change.

WOW! That's neat. The people must be wealthy to afford that, and it's nice to see great generosity come with great wealth. when I was a kid, one place gave out candy apples. Since this was not usual, and the apples were home made, the police were contacted by the home owner, and the apples were inspected beforehand. When he gave them to the children, he attached his name and phone number to them, to make sure that if anything suspicious happens, he could be contacted. Other houses would sometimes give out a can of coke. That was always a wonderful treat!

That kind of a neat idea. I've never heard of such a thing where people give their info when they make something home made nor having the items inspected. Cans' of Coke? Wow! That'll really add to the sugar rush the kids already have from the candy.

hi 3snugglebunnies you should h ave s een forty kids on sugar rush in the library after the kids librarian had given them a ll little sacks of candy bars.they of course ate them all then went prancing around the kids side pulling off books, tossingthem at each other and moms yelling at them, and me trying to keep all the books picked up behind the sugared up; kids it was almost funnyh and oh nmy the grumbles from the adult side. I took one grumble to my suprevisor w ho told me to tell him this was Halloween and have a little patience here. that of course did not set will with Mr Potts the mayor of T ustin lol lol that was the year the three ps all sort of jerky stuffed shirts were on the tustin city counsel Potts, Puckett and Prescatt.

A Nancy Drew novel, I would have been psyched if I were a kid. I remember when I lived at home my parents one year and they didn't want to give out candy because they were too tired to answer the door all night. So I did it. At the end of the night we had five last trick or treaters. But I didn't see one of the boys until I had already emptied out the candy bowl. So I told him to wait and grabbed my wallet. All I had was a five. So I have it to him instead of candy. He was way more happy with the money than he would have been with the candy. Glad he was the last one because I had no more candy or money. I just didn't want for one little boy to be left out.

Where do you live? We'll be right over! And how many times can my kids come by? *LOL* The strange thing is she only gave a book to my oldest not the younger two.

I used to get money when I was a kid for Halloween. I think it was nice that your daughter got a Nancy Drew novel as well even though I never heard of getting a book for Halloween. I think this day and age people are afraid to give out candy because you never know what will be inside it. I hope that the people on the east coast get to go trick or treating.

Yeah I've heard about the storm, but not too much I haven't watched the news much lately. Yes I found the book odd. Most I have seen aren't afraid to give out candy many don't anymore for financial reasons. The neighborhood where my kids were handing out candy, they come in econoline vans to dump 15 kids out of a van to go trick or treating. I understand some neighborhoods especially the bad ones don't participate in giving out candy/treats.

I am giving my students a code for zombies vs. plants. they are giving it out free. There is a teacher in the area that gives out books. She has one for the little kids and different one for the older kids. She must spend more than she did on candy, even using sites like Scholastic that give her free stuff when she spends as much as she does, but I like the unique non candy things that I have found in my daughter's bucket.

My son got a book once. I know a few times my kids got pencils. Once someone was handing out cans of soda and another house was giving out those single serve bags of chips. I have not seen anyone give out change since I was a kid.

I like the idea of handing out books. Of course, that could get rather expensive pretty quickly if you have a lot of trick-or-treaters. Since I don't have kids, I'm not certain what sort of treats are generally given out around here.

When I was a little girl there was one woman that would always make special treat bags for the children that she really knew from the neighborhood. These bags would have a full-sized candy bar, a few other pieces of candy and a dollar in them. I always thought that she was great. You see, we not only knew her from the neighborhood, but my father also worked with her. This year at a Trunk or Treat on Sunday my children were each given a book by one of the cars and they also gave a book to my husband and myself as well. I thought that was a great idea.

A novel is a really unique one that I have never heard of. Once in awhile when i was young I would get full sized candy bars and once, little plastic toys. Also some change. This sounds like a unique year for your kids then.

There is a dental office near my house. They give out toothbrushes lol....kids don't seem to get too excited about that. As for the nickles....were the people at that house really old? The only times I've ever seen anyone give out change when it was the house of an elderly person. At least it was nickles....I've seen them hand out pennies lol. Its very sweet but like some of you had said money doesn't go as far as it used to.

I honestly don't know I didn't ask and I didn't walk that close to see. I was on the road while the kids ran up the drive ways. Yeah change doesn't get anyone anywhere anymore. Though still thoughtful just the same. Afterall we participate on this site for change *LOL* But it all adds up.

The novel is an unsual treat. My daughter received coins from our neighbors and candies. She also had junk foods. She enjoyed it a lot.

hi 3snugglebunnies we did not have trick or treating when I was growing up but the first time I went to a Halloween party we had black licorice, candy corn and yellow and black gum drops plus an orange and black cheese cake that was so good wow. then one year I made home made peanut brittle and popcorn balls and the kids who came by loved them and some returned lol lol lol.one year I gave out small red apples, small tangerines and sacks of popcorn after the initial shock of no candy a lot of them took the fruit and all took the popcorn sacks. in the last apt complex where we were we were told not to give out treats as they had a big party for those with kids. we were kidless my adult son and i so we did not go although we were invited also we had an eviction notice so why fraternize with that B.a.s.t.ar.d manager jerk. He could have worked with us and let my non get a job and make some extra payment on the rent but he refused to help at all.anyway I miss the handing out of treats it was fun for me.

The novel sounds like a good idea. I bought some packages of pencils decorated for Halloween to give out with some candy. I seldom get very many here, but I like giving out something different from the year before. I also got some little bottles of bubbles I thought the kids would like. I hope the storm allows the kids their trick or treat night.
