Okay here is the deal. I use Xperia. WhatsApp came preinstalled and I use it. I have another phone, say X. If I buy a new SIM card put the old SIM in X and use the new one in Xperia, can I still use WhatsApp to send or receive msgs if people send it to the old number? That is do I need to register afresh with the new number or I can use WhatsApp connected to the old number although I'm using a different SIM?

Not sure can you change the number without changing the SIM but i do know it will automatically get the number of your SIM as the point of contact. Maybe you should feedback to them on this.

I tried with a new SIM maintaining the registration with the old number and it worked.

As the program's operation is tied to the mobile phone number, you will have to re-register onto your new number. Entering the old number will render the software inoperable when the app center need dispatches a PIN via SMS to your new number for the program to run.

I was also imagining that something of this sort will happen but not at all. I'm really shocked. I changed the SIM and opened WhatsApp, it started to work with the old registered number. It didn't even ask me to re-register. Strange but good, Solves my purpose.
Good day!
