Finding a Roommate....suggestions? Is it safe to use websites?

Hello in order to save a little extra money I'd really like to find at least one roommate. Unfortunately I do not know anyone at this time and I keep seeing these websites for finding room mates. Has anyone ever used one of these sites? I looked on Craigslist and not to my surprise all the people on there looking seemed kinda crazy lol. Have you had a room mate before? Is it a friend or just someone you found somehow? I've never had one before aside from temporary college situations. How did it work out? Any suggestions on this matter?
