I was reading this article http://www.democraticunderground.com/1002428306 about JK Rowling donating sums of her earnings to various charities to the point of losing her billionaire status. There was also a mention that she used to be on public assistance before she made it big in her career. Do you agree or disagree that if you have had some sort of financial hardship that you would be more likely to donate to charity? I think it's commendable to donate money when it's far more than you possibly need to survive. I think we'd all like to be in the position where we can give because we have no financial woes.

Hi,
Giving away part of your billions make you go easy on the IRS. Ta exemptions may be the main reason why it is more profitable giving to charity than to pay taxes. If her motives goes beyond that, then her action is commendable. After all, what will she do with the excess money, it is just another extra burden to carry in the long run. As Jesus said "It is hard for a wealthy man to pass to pass through the eye of the needle..."
Personally, the things that I don't an cannot use belongs to somebody else so I have to give them away.

Your cynicism in this instance demeans us all. Rowlings was a welfare recipient at one point, until her talent turned her into what she is today, but if anyone thinks a writer of her stature does it for the money has no idea whatsoever of the demands of the creative urge, and I pity them.

grandpa_ lash, hi, I do understand what you saying and if she is done with a good heart it is good for her, there are very less people in this world like her. but one thing is why make the donations public. It could have been anonymous also. Making it public means something. People giving will just give without the other hand even knowing. see my point. haha well it is all how people understand.

Pour encouragez les autres.
Besides, it was probably her agent who made it public.

hi 3SnuggleBunnies yes if I was a millionaire or billionaire I would donate to
charities like mad. but alas I am in the situation of needing some donations myself lol lol I am proud of her for all she has done and how she has viewed her financial status. She seems like a really likeable woman and very intelligent one too. If I had oh m y I have yes and no I am not donating to anyone as I am just paying my bills and keeping some snacks on hand for my diabetic lows and hoping for funds for Christmas.

I think that it is great that she is donating money to charities. Having been on assistance in the past I am sure she recognizes the hardships that people can face. I think that if I were to have the resources to help out like she does I would do it in a heartbeat.
So what if she is no longer a billionaire. Its not like being a millionaire makes her close to broke right? I am sure people love being on Forbes list, but she obviously thinks that being a good person means more.

Agreed!
I think I saw that she wrote another book. I saw it at Target the other day, and I was actually tempted to buy it because Harry Potter was such a huge hit! But I passed it up. Maybe I will get it as a X mas gift for one of the kids.
It is nice that she's donating a lot of her money. She can't possibly use it all and doesn't need it all. I think I'd probably donate a lot of it too.

That's fine.
Giving out with a heart counts. Despite of how everyone might say that may or can degrade you, passing out good things and blessings in life will be the most rewarding feeling than being recognized as one of the billionaires alive.
For me, if she had been poor before who got rich out of her wits and talents, this also affects (or moves) her in donating her share for the better of humanity. She would have know better how bad it feels to be broke, to be a single parent, to be less fortunate. So that means, it is fine. She's not doing this out of popularity as for what I am seeing so far.
Thanks for sharing your thoughts and happy mylotting :)

Hi 3SnuggleBunnies, thanks for sharing this information.
I like her saying in the interview, "You have a moral responsibility when you've been given far more than you need, to do wise things with it and give intelligently".
It is true the feeling is different that when a billionaire person donates to charity compares to ordinary people donates to charity. Many people sees the billionaire's donation as part of their publicity for reputation and fame as they are able to donate such a huge amount. But regardless donation is made by the rich or ordinary people, as long as the heart of the donor is genuine and sincere, that is all it takes and counted for. Blessed are those who can receive the donation because it helps many who are in need. =)

I think it's more commendable to donate money when you don't have much. A billionaire who gives enough away to make herself only a millionaire doesn't really resonate with me.
I am glad she is giving it away, of course, and I think financial position does make a difference. They say that the lower the income, the more, percentage wise, that people give to charity. (Not including JK Rowling, of course!)

Good for her! Having billions doesn't mean you have a better life but using that money to help others means you have a life that matters. I don't expect anyone to impoverish themselves giving to others but when you have more than you can possibly spend it makes sense to me to use some of it to help your fellow man.
Personally, I would invest a couple million so I could live off the interest and start setting up self-funding (investment funded) foundations to help people. I'm sure that's one of the things her financial advisers have suggested. She remembers where she came from and how dehumanizing it was.

I think it's nice that she donated the money for sure. There are far too many dollars in the pockets of some that won't come off with a penny to help those in need. It is a shame that some people have enough to help so many people but instead insist on maintaining a status..I mean.even if they gave a million, if they had a billion. You know?

I Think that teoretically all of us would donate if we became billionaires. I just wonder how many of us would get to the point of actually doing it. I think JK Rowlings is an example to follow. We don`t have to be billionaires to help some. Help is not even all about money donatons: we can help donating our time.

I think a billionaire can give all the money they want. Also such people do it for reducing the income tax as far as my country is concerned. It is better than making all the money into black money. At least some benefit is there.People like us can donate only if we have enough money. If we don't have money enough for ourselves,no point in donating to the poor.I would say that we should have enough money to give others so that we would receive God's blessings.

If everyone in the US (I know that she is from the UK), who made that amount of money donated to charities to that amount, I would not have students who were hungry Monday mornings because they did not have enough to eat over the weekend.
My husband and I have already talked about if we won it big in the lottery what we would do with the money. I would love to have a foundation that focused on making sure that all students had the supplies they needed in school to be successful, and help students who have the drive to go to school, but not the money.

I heard this morning that George Lucas has just sold the rights to Star Wars to Disney for 4 billion dollars, and has donated the nentire sum to charity.
There should be more like them.

it is a good deed indeed. This donating money also reduces the amount they pay tax also so God knows her heart and if pure heart than her reward is truly in heaven. There are also trusts that do not the the needful and the donated money do not always go to the poor and the needy. Therefore, if I were to give i would give to the needy in their hands and made it sure myself that the money goes in the right hands. It can be a trick of publicity as well. When one gives and it is anonymous that is bets way of giving and you other hand does not know that you have given. See for eg, the famous movie actor, salman has being human as a trust and all the money that is extra and need to be taxed might be going in the trust to save tax. There are so much one can do but no one is doing anything. it is just for the name sake i guess. When you see Mumbai, how dirty it is but still no one cares. Only people filling there pockets. I am sure there must be problems there in other countries but the own people do not do anything about it. they make tall claims but the end result is zero..There are lot of stunts in the world which is tried by many people. So many these famous people call the press to announce all this and it is not pure giving then.
Just my heart out. Thanks for sharing and have a wonderful day ahead.
