How do you think your online friends look like?

I am wondering a lot of times how the people that I talk with online might look like! In fact, I create a picture in my mind fo the people that I talk more! I have in my mind an image with a specific hair colour or maybe a figure based on the impression that I get from our discussions! It comes naturally to me and I also do that from the voice of someone whenI talk on the phone with people that I ve never seen! This image in my mind isn't always correct though, I have met some people later that looked very different!
I think I also have a general figure about some of my friends in mylot as well (that don't have their pic for their avatar).
Does thid happen to you as well? Have you ever thought how the people that chat with you look like, even if you don't know anything about their real looks?

Yes. I do this too. And I'm usually wrong. Sometimes people may comment on a physical attribute they may have that gives you an idea of what they look like. If someone says they think they're fat or that their hair is long you have a little to go on. But it's not much. And I've been told that I was pictured with gray hair and looking kind of grandmotherly. I guess because I'm 64. But when they met me they were surprised. My hair is not gray and I don't look (or act) like anybody's grandmother. It's funny when, and if, you finally do meet somebody how different they look. I know one thing - I don't look anything like my avatar!

I don't look like my avatar either! :)
I didn't know your age and I think I would picture you much younger. We can only have a general impression based on the very little information that we have for our online friends! Basically, I create this image in my mind mainly from the writing style and ideas that every person has. And I do the most irrelevant predictions that you might think! My weakest part is the age, I am so cofused and I can't understand if the other person is younger or older than me!

My generation is different than our parents. The gap between generations widens in some ways. Like my mother's generation, as they became old, was more like their parents at that age. But my generation is nothing like our parents were at our age. We're more in tune with younger people than our parents were at our age. Funny. So consequently, when you don't see us, we tend to sound younger than we are. Yes, online it's hard to tell a person's age unless they say something specific. And I agree. I have a strong feeling you look nothing like your avatar!

I had some really good lasting friendships online. And they were one of the best friends i have. And the good thing, i learn from their cultures since majority of them are from foreign countries. The difference though in your discussion is that we communicate online through skype and we do video chat so, i know how they look.

I also have online friends from other countries but I haven't talked to them through skype! You must have developed very good friendships with your friends!
What about when you first met them? Before you see them on skype, were you guessing how they might look like?

Yes i do have bonded with them online and knowing them in person is much better! I have no problem opening my cam when chatting for i know that all is done through friendship nothing more nothing less. :) meeting them in person also, is a better way to get to know them better seeing them without the nasty blurry resolution of a web camera and mind you, they are more good looking in person than on cam. Ha Ha :D

I have had the same kind of thing happen to me, someone sounds a certain way and talks a certain way and usually look completely different than I imagined them to be, even with a pic of them self, sometimes people use old pics and never update them, leaving people under the impression that they are younger looking.
I have found that a lot of people have the same personalities that they portray online, but not always.

Online personality might be different comparing to the real character or a person. But some people are real in both and they express their views no matter if they do it on the internet or in person.
I've also noticed that people keep their pics for years without changing them! But I guess it looks strange to update the avatar all the time like we do on facebook! Then the other users might not recognise us with a different avatar!

I have that with some of my friends. Some of them have a picture of them at their avatar (as I usually do), but others have very different things including emoticons. Sometimes I sort of try to imagine how they look like when I`m answering one of their posts, but most of the times I just give up.

You are so right! I remember that when I read the book "Little women", I always thought the Jo must look like me, as it was the character I most liked.

Yes, people with pictures as avatars make it easy for me to create a full picture of them! For the other, we can create our own image and keep that in our minds! It reminds me of what happens when we are reading books! Books give information about the characters and we can imagine them and make a full picture in our own minds!

I just used to draw the image of the friend who just used to chat with me. The pictures which I draw in my mind is total a rough one but I had find little similarity between the picture and the actual face but I had find such an similarity for only once

Wow, you must have really paid attention to the details to imagine your friend's face as it was! I have never drawn an image of a friend, I've only tried to make a portrait of me once and I could achieve similarity to my face characteristics but I couldn't draw the hair! That's the most difficult part for me!

I think that online friends are very different from offline friends. Because you can't see them, and they might present something that's not real. I have online friends and we chat, but we don't share any personal information. So I do have an image about them without knowing how they really look like! I think that you will make a lot of friends here in mylot, people that will exchange ideas with you and make good conversations about your discussions. Happy mylotting!

Sometimes I do have this picture in my mind of how my online friends would look like. But then again, it really doesn't matter whether they will be just a faceless friend. Not all of them can we force to show how they really look to us for personal reasons. Nevertheless, a friend will be a friend no matter how they might look like.

Actually, I like having my own image of them! But most of the times it has nothing to do with the reality!
I do it with voices as well, have you ever listened to a radio show without knowing the person that does the show and imagine how he/she looks like? I've done that and then I looked online I realised that my imaginary picture was very different from reality.
It's true that it doesn't matter how our online friends look, but as you get to know them it's inevitable to create an impression about them!

Hmmmm in my mind also create a image or picture about most of the mylotter like Dianan madam looking very nice when she is feeling angry, Hatley Grand ma is healthy means fat and her memory power is sharp, Ravi uncle smily man, Sreekala a sweet looking women, Vidhya my brother like body builder means his body is healthy, HWG friend is beautiful women, etc. I can say about all but for example these all are sufficient.

Haha! Yes, that's how I am thinking about it too! I have some characteristics that are combined with my image and they make each friend's personality. All online friends have something interesting that becomes their strong characteristic! Thanks for your comment! :)

I am not sure, I don't have a visual image of them, but I do think avatar's have quite a lot of impact on how we see people, or they do on me, as when someone changes their avatar I find myself thinking of then differently. They reveal something different about themselves.
What scares me though is that there are a few people I know online who if I should ever meet I am going to very disappointed when it turns out they aren't really a cat.

Haha! I know what you mean! But for some reason, I believe that some people might be more real when they are online, comparing to who they are offline. Because they can express themselves and keep this "anonymity" that internet offers. Of course, there are people that do the opposite and they present a fake image about themselves, we can never know!
I haven't met any of my online friends offline, they all live in other countries. But I do have a visual image of them, and their avatar is very important for me as well. I guess that our avatar shows something about our character and what we like!
Thanks for your comment!

Funny But good question.
I really prefer not to make friends whom I have not known personally, but yes there can be a lot of curiosity about the kind of appearance of the person whom you have only known online and through your chatting. But I feel all this risky to keep such friends have shared with them your feelings and thoughts.
Its not about that I am an introvert kind of being but its like that I do not feel that urge to go to an extend that I will be befriending someone whom I have never met nor I have seen before and this idea will not at-all fascinate me.
But being in touch with somebody like that and sharing a relation of friendship or something more can lead to lot many excitement and thoughts. Mostly you will portray such images in your mind like the way that person have presented himself or herself to you.

Yes, I agree that the images come from the way that the other people describe themselves. But sometimes it can be based in the writing style or the ideas, without really knowing and details about the physical appearance. I have never met an online friend in person and they are people that I have met through online sites and I keep communicating with them through those sites. Everyone is from a different country so starting a friendship like this is difficult and hard to maintain. But many people have done it and I guess it is possible!

Most of my Online Friends have a picture of them. For those who don't, I do try and make up what they look like.

Well, That's why I like to place a real picture. And not some drawing or pic from the net. If people don't show their face I don't wanna be bothered by imaging what they look like.

I like having an image for each one of my online friends, that's why I create one when they have random image for avatar. But seeing the real picture is much more direct like you said and we can actually see the person that we are having an online discussion with!

Yeah,I sometimes imagine the people who chat with me online, how he/she looks like, just like you to think about their hair color, how tall they are, even their appearance.I do believe imagination is not correct enough because it is only on the basis of words they said online. For me,I think it is not necessary to meet online freiends face to face.Just share your opinons,happiness,etc.together.What do you think?

In the most part, I agree. I like mylot because I can share my opinion and feelings with people that have never met me, but still, they will give me their honest opinion and sometimes they might tell a truth that my close friends won't say because it might hurt! I think that it's very different to meet someone online and them meet them face to face! Many people are afraid of this because they think that they might dissapoint the other, or be dissapointed.
However, I think that online friendships can develop to offline friendships as well, if the two people have a lot of common interests and they have fun both online and offline!

I wonder that too since I have a lot of online friends from online games. Luckily, we always keep in touch through Facebook so I know what they look like more or less. I just noticed that friends from online games are younger compared to friends from Facebook apps/games. The latter are usually adults or parents looking for casual games :) It's funny when you have this mental image of them in your mind and they completely look different when you find out what they really look like XD

Haha, yes! But surprises are good right?
I also have some friends from facebook games but we don't talk so much. My online friends are mostly from the reviewing site where I write regularly. Most of them have pics but some of them don't, and since I read their writings a lot, I have also an image about how they might look! :)
Of course life is full of surprises and they probably look very different!
Happy mylotting!
