Are you aware of the Japan International Cooperation Agency study that revealed that Metro Manila will crumble if a 7.2 and above magnitude earthquake strikes. This JICA study is conducted last year 2011 with World Bank and Asian Development Bank.
The JICA study revealed Metro Manila was not prepared to deal with a 7.2-magnitude earthquake in terms of existing resources and given old building structures around and within the metropolis. This will result in major fires in Manila, Pasig, and Quezon City. Fire hydrants will not be enough that it would take seven days before authorities can declare "fire out" as major fire engines come from Quezon City and Pasig City, areas which are also at high risks.
Marikina fault line is cited, now known as the Valley Point System, which runs from Sierra Madre to Sta. Rosa, Laguna. The line starts from the Sierra Madre and runs through Bulacan, Rodriguez, Rizal, Quezon City, the eastern side of Metro Manila, including Pasig, Taguig, Muntinlupa, San Pedro, and Sta. Rosa in Laguna and ends in Carmona Cavite. The fault is classified active because it moved within the last 10,000 years.
I hope and pray that this disaster will never come to reality.

Then if that is the case the people in Manila should already have an earthquake awareness because we never know when things are going to happen. We have already seen how ravaging earthquake and how much it had cost a lot of money and life. Of course, let us not just focus in Manila. The whole Philippines should be prepared.

Yes, our government are full of people who are irresponsible and as always looking for opportunity to enrich themselves. They didn't bother to make concrete plans and make use this kind of studies and report to lessen the impact of incoming disaster and will only act when the disaster already occur. Then they will blame each other for neglecting their duties.

This Jica Study has been out since last year and I can't see our government making any definitive effort to heightens earthquake awareness here in the metropolis and I can't see any plan are being prepared both by the national and local government if this eventuality happens.
Have a nice day.

Aw that sounds tragic. I live here at Cotabato City and I usually hear elders say, "what happened to the Capital city of Philippines?" Flood, earthquake, fire, crimes, piracy and etc.
I really don't know if what's mentioned are for real- but you know, media shows it that way.
But no matter what, Manila is still my fellow countrymen. I hope and pray God bless them and protect them more, if His guidance is needed then abundantly.
Take care Manilenos!

I sorry to hear that your house is built along the Marikina fault.
By the way, old houses like our house are more vulnerable to this type of quake.
The LRT they say is built to withstand a 7.9 quake while new high rise building are built on the same high building standard.
Let just hope and pray this will never come to happen.
Have a nice day.

I've read an article about that. And yes, it is a scary sight. All we could do is pray and hope that we will be spared from such disaster.

I know and studies about fault lines just came out lately because of sophisticated gadgets, nothing much we can do now but to get the citizenry prepared, take it from me pal, our old house in Malate , Manila ( when we were still living there) was turned into some kind of command and control center for relief operations during the Ruby tower quake of 1968 simply because my late father was President of the local Y.M.C.A., calamities will simply become bigger and stronger so in a way we should have a prepper mentality, sorry but we cannot rely on Government living in a poor country, we have to rely on ourselves and always be prepared

yep so experience has taught me to be a prepper, not as some do to the extremes like preparing for the end of the world but simply being prepared for the worst or a major calamity to come in our country. There was another major quake and that was the Baguio quake in the 90's and I had been to Baguio Park hotel during a LIONS convention that was totally destroyed and so was Hyatt were most of my friends were booked, and horror thoughts still pass my mind " what if these happened when we were there gosh..., and remember picking up my parents in their shop after the quake and everything just seems like not what it use to be

Yeah, this happened Monday, July 16, 1990 and I hoped this will be the last major quake I have to encounter in my whole life. The 7.8M earthquake did not made any major damage to Metro Manila but left Baguio in shambles and isolation.
I was here in Metro Manila when this tremors occurred.
It was around past four in the afternoon and I was talking to a friend just outside of our gate when the earth just suddenly the earth shook and all electric post are swaying so forcefully as if they will gonna fall. I felt as if it's already the end of the world. After the quake almost all people are outside the street and talking about this once a in a lifetime experience.
Hope this will never happen again...

That's so terrible. I don't even want to think what can happen if an earthquake that strong hits us. Let's just be prepared for the worst. The government should improve the calamity and disaster preparedness so we won't have a hard time if we get struck. They should get more resources and improve infrastructures to lessen the blow.

Let us hope that the government made preparations to improve our calamity and disaster mobility after receiving this studies. The government should have created alertness drills to make the people aware and better prepared in case the worst scenario happens.
Have a nice day.

Ye, I am aware of this fact.
This year, the PHIVOLCS director, , had a lecture about this so-called Marikina Fault Line at our university. He did say how much damage this earthquake would cause. And I just wish that our president would take these things into consideration. He should be aware that we are a very disaster prone country. We lie along the Pacific Ring of Fire, and there are hundreds of trenches surrounding us that may cause very disastrous earthquakes. Hence, he must invest in disaster control and management. It is a good investment for it could save money, effort, time, security and most importantly, the lives of our countrymen.

Hi jjpotter, welcome to mylot!
Nice to know that the Philvocs director have gone to your universities giving some lectures on earthquakes. By the way, what is the name of your school and are you aware that the Philvocs directors also made round with other universities giving same lectures.
I also wish the president will also take all this into consideration because all of this will equates to more lives save during any disasters.
Have a nice day.
