I am a LIAR!

The homily today hit hard, many cringed.
The Priest asked: Do you love God? Everyone nodded and said yes.
The priest added: Easiest of commandments, what about do you love your neighbor?
When no one reacted, he said that those who answered yes to the first question lie if they cannot answer the same to the second question.
For our God gave us two commandments, love God and love our neighbor.
I turned to my daughter and whispered I am a LIAR. My daughter pulled my hand and squeezed it and whispered I am a LIAR, too, Mommy.
True: we do lie if we say we love God yet we do not love our neighbor.
Gosh, my neighbor? Love my neighbor? How is that again?
Oh God, please, I need much help on that, or forever I will remain a LIAR.

This is a very difficult commandment for many of us. I have been hurt badly by a lot of people, and trying to even think of them in terms other than anger or outright rage is nearly impossible. I do need healing in that area and beg God for the grace of forgiveness so I can love and serve Him as He desires. Alas, peace in my heart is fleeting at best.
When we succumb to the power of unforgiveness, vengeance, hatred and anger towards others, we are doing the work of the enemy. It is my greatest hope and petition to the Lord that all men might experience love for each other, so we can all love God sincerely and live peaceably with one another and ourselves. We cannot be at peace within ourselves with negative feelings towards others, and I ask you who read this to please pray for God's mercy to permeate my soul so I may be merciful in thought to those who have hurt me.
Christ gave us the best example from the cross and the whipcords that sliced through His very flesh on His way to Calvary. We also need to express that kindness towards those who have done us harm.
Lord Jesus, you asked of us to love others as we love ourselves. Heal us from the burden of rejection and sin that prevents us from loving those who have done harm to us, send forth your Spirit to renew us and bring us closer to you. Amen.

Thanks a ton for sharing this discussion. Well i know that it must have been very much embarrassing for u and your daughter from within for lying but we too have no options either. Even if we do not like our neighbors then we have to admit it, but then since we should all stay together in a society so we have to respect our neighbors no matter how rude and harsh they are. But if we love God then i do not think we should feel guilty even if we do not love our neighbors. For me God is far more important than my neighbors.
What say?

love your neighbor first, far more important than loving God first. when you love your neighbor, you'll understand how to love God. Are you married? How about, why is it that there are so many divorces in the world and all the story books say they married and lived happily ever after? Because that is what they'll never do.

Human beings are born with sin and we will forever be sinners. I am the kind of person that genuinely cares for the well-being of others, however, I also acknowledge that there are some people that I'm just not able to love. Therefore that makes me a liar as well. The reason that I say this is because I don't see the commandment of "love thy neighbor" to be something that is taken literally. Instead, it is something that really means to love all people.
I honestly don't think that there is a person alive that is able to love everyone that they encounter in their lives.

Well, we may not love all our neighbors, because there are some reasons. However, it doesn't mean that we don't love God.
Yes, that was the homily today, and i guess most people don't do the second most important commandments. It's difficult to love an enemy. But it can be done, but it will take time for the wound to heal before we can, in that case.

I kind of think that it's a weird issue. I don't think anybody EVER is sinless and could follow a religion's commandments and beliefs a 100%. Not even the priests. I don't think you lied... but again, I'm not religious, so I'm kind of seeing this from the outside. If you feel you love something, you love it. Love should be unconditional.

and we don't even have to look far. with our own family and relatives, there are people we just can't stand. :( there are people we'd rather help or be kind to without even thinking about it - friends, officemates, even strangers. we're all imperfect humans so we compensate. :)

You are not a liar my friend because most of us really loved our God,Who teaches us the greatest love to all.We could not say we love our neighbors because we have some sort of misunderstandings to them the other day,yet when some sort of a
happening is going the first person we could ask is our neighbor, who is always happy to help our chores. We just needed some adjustments in our ways but loving our neighbor is still at work.We are all humans with many sins because we are born
not so pure yet we can become one by acting as what God have taught us to give love and so that we could also be given the acceptable love from our neighbors.

Hello Eileenleyva, It's hard to be a Christian, it's one of the reasons i don't go to church now a days. because i don't want to feel guilty of being sermoned and then still after leaving the church after the mass, i'd act as if nothing happen. it's basically HARD most specially if the neighbor is annoying. luckily, my mom is a good person, a negotiator and knows how to talk to people.

Hi friend, Why don't you try to convert the lie as a truth? Start to love your neighbor and convert your lie as true. There is nothing wrong in lying without our knowledge as well as based on the situation. We have the ability to convert the good lies in to a real one. So love your neighbors and love God
