Free video programs

Hello, I have been using Windows Movie Maker for a while, to make home videos and slideshows, with my pictures and videos, but I find that this is a very unstable program, with many problems to save videos well, unless is in wma, when I save to .avi, usually music is distorted. I have used others, with relative success, like ezvid, which is a good program, with the disadvantage that only save to youtube, and I not always want to do so, and AVSvideoeditor, this is very cool, but, unless I activate it,and pay I can´t save to any format but their own, of course, this is not told you, until you have already download it as a "free" program, and you want to save your first project. So, my question is, Is there any really free, good alternative to Windows Movie Maker, with no hidden costs, that allows me to download to my computer, in the format I choose? I would really appreciate if anyone can help me.
