In his 1991 book, The Miracle of Language, Richard Lederer wrote about poetry and the source of its power:
Poems are life transmuted into diamonds, compact and indestructible.
Inspired, naive and reckless, I wrote a sonnet. And then, I wrote another. And another. And another after that. This is one of them.
Calculus of Love
With one less fear a day, you can be brave,
Take one less worry, you can change your mood,
With one less anger, you can see the truth,
Take one less burden, life can feel so good.
With one more tender kiss, your heart gets strong,
Plus one more sweet embrace, your dreams shall be,
With one more charming smile, you'll have the world,
Plus one more word of love, you can be free.
The calculus of love is simple math,
You take the bad things out and have them thrown,
The good things that you keep, you get some more,
In time, you'll see your blessings shall have grown.
The more you trust in fate, the less our pain,
The less you fight with truth, the more we gain.
