A bad bout of cough lasting for more than a month

I'm so worried about my daughter. She's had this cough since October, and we've brought her to 3 different doctors. The first one gave her a set of medicines including antibiotics and a mucolytic. Apparently, the mucolytic just made it worse because my girl don't know how to spit phlegm, so it builds up in her lungs and could have caused pneumonia if not attended to sooner. The second doctor gave the same type of antibiotic with a different brand, so, that means that the bacteria will just get immune. Finally, we brought her to a pediatrician specializing in pulmonology and she is a lot better now. Plus, the medicines given were not bitter tasting, so it was easy to make her take it.
We didn't get to bring her to this doctor in the first place, because his schedule was not very feasible for us. Good thing there was a longer holiday and he was available.
I just hope she'll be in full recovery in the next few days.

How young is your daughter? If she can eat basil try giving her this herb.

Oh she is too young to eat (raw) basil. In our place seedlings of basil are sold in a mall at a little bit lower than $1.00.
Just follow the prescriptions of your doctor.
I hope nobody smokes in the family.

I see.
Oh, my husband smokes outside the house. But, yeah, I know, that still brings hazard to the family. I have warned him about it but he just cant afford to quit right now. He is worried about the side effects of quitting.

I hope she gets better soon, friend. Besides the meds that doctors give, in my country we make an insusion with avocado leaf and sweeten it with honey. It soothes the throat.

That sounds special. I haven't tried that my whole life. I'm not so fond of making concoctions, never good at that. So, I just hope these meds work.

I do use lukewarm salt solution whenever I feel itchiness on my throat which is a sign that I may have cough in the next day or two. It always works.

I hope she gets well soon. It is really bad to be coughing that long coz pneumonia might set in. With a cough that long, a stronger antibiotic is really the best.

The pulmonologist didn't give her antibiotics anymore, because she already had 2 sets from the previous doctors, and that was just a week apart.
She also hated the taste. it was very hard to make her drink the antibiotics.

@jureathome Hi there! I hope you won't mind me asking, what medicine did your pulmo give you? I'm just curious because you said that it cured the chronic cough of your daughter. Many thanks!

Hi,
I should be very concerned when a cough goes for more than a week. It is a sure sign of lung infection and it should be treated as soon as possible. Tests should be undertaken to determine what type of infection she's got to have the appropriate medication to be taken.

She is taking some medicines now, prescribed by the doctor who specializes in that kind of disease, and it seems to be working well for her. I hope this is for full recovery in a couple days.

try good sunshine on her back in the morning. it's effective. and I don't know your country, but here in Philippines, they have this ASCOF brand or any LAGUNDI leaves based syrup. In most cases it is effective. A child upon growing up will always have cough and colds, I don't think it is better to give her antibiotic every time she has cough.
