Hello Lotters, I remember the line in Star Trek; First Contact when a girl from the past ask about the cost of how the ship build. "money is no longer the center of ourlives, we work for the betterment of humanity" It was never really answered how economics has changed in the 24th century of that scifi movie, how ever it is just non-fiction. I wonder, what if some one finds a way to restructure our entire economy? better than capitalism, communism, or any kind of economic structure that exist in the books and governments today.. because you really can't move with out money no matter how you try not to be materialistic...

You could go and give things away to whomever asks them, and in a way that is what the pagans did centuries ago when they buried their weapons and their goods with them. In essence they gave them to their idols. That meant that their heirs and their wives had to start afresh, make their own weapons and clothes and get their own seeds because what they would have inherited was in the burial ground. You could also get everyone together and distribute everything equally, but what happens if one is conscientious and makes more of what he got? Will not the result be that someone who was lazy demand that that man divy up the excess he made so everyone is equal again? That is wrong. You could go back to bartering, but that would mean in order to get something, you may have to load your van or truck with a matteress or whatever, and then maybe you want some furniture, you have to load the furniture in the van and what if it does not fit? So we really need money so that we do not have to carry or drive with a whole lot of stuff to exchange.

I think the greatest mistake was when America abandoned the gold standard. I do not know about my own country, Canada, whether it took the same path, but money has to have a precious metal to back it up. That is in case something happens and we know that the ordinary people are persuaded to sell their old jewelry and coins so that others, more likely the rich or the government, can keep them from relying on their small bits of gold and silver if something goes wrong. Right now with money backed by paper, it is like paper credit and that is wrong. The trouble is that not many people have old rings or watches and not many have bought those valuable coins, at least in the ordinary sense.

Hello suspenseful, I didn't of anything going back bcause those days were over. if we are moving forward and having all of these financial knowledge that are not working these days, there should be new ones coming. I wonder if money credit can be invented out of teh internet world wth out the money coming from the real paper or gold or coin.

The only way that we will ever remove the greed for money is to eliminate it, just as you are suggesting. Of course in order to achieve this is to create sufficient resouirces for the whole planet so that there is no use for money. Considering the vast amount of poverty in existence today and the ever increasing world population, this would a seriously formidable task. We are finding it increasingly difficult to even maintain the standard of living at present, so improvements are rather unlikely in the current circumstances.

To be fair that type of greed extends beyond money, so removing money from the equasion would not necessarily remove the greed. In the example that you give, all crew members onboard the Enterprise and elsewhere strive to improve their rank through promotion. A higher rank would carry more power and status, which no doubt has other benefits. Surely this is very much the same as the current passion for money.

Hello Asylum, I don't know to remove something that is part of human nature, it's in our attitude sometimes most specially if we weren't given proper breeding. there are times that when most people started tasting money, they will never let go of it and will think more of earning more money, and that's where the greed starts

How I wish that we could get out of that system right now and just work and get what we need in our lives. But somehow money is the only working system that works for everybody right now and introducing a new system of exchange would be very hard since we are all used to using money as our means to exchange services and products.

The star trek economy was somewhat like a communist idea actually. Everything will be provided by the government and you just do your job. There was no currency or means of exchange just ask for your needs and the supposed government will provide it for you. In our present setup it is you who will find means to earn for you to live. That is I guess the easiest system in existence since we all know that Communist ideals did not survive well and what you see from the present situation most of them do not have a healthy economy right now. China though they call themselves communist but they have adjusted their economy to a more open to the ideals of capitalism which is based on the money system. That is why I cannot imagine our society having no money involved in it. I think this is the perfect and most effective means to really make our lives either comfortable or hard depending on how you manage to earn it.

Hello Rsa101, The need for food and other necessities is one major factor why we need money so that we can buy them and use them for every day needs. it's hard to believe that the prices of the commodities are rising because of the rise of oil. i don't know, maybe it's not easy now compare before when life was just simple.

The only way to stop the love of money (which is the root of all evil, by the way) from controlling us is to wipe out human greed. I don't think that will happen any time soon and doubt that you could even wipe out greed. It would be really nice, though, if we could all work for the benefit of humanity, happily and unselfishly. But that would be denying human nature and I don't think it will happen for centuries, if we are even here that long.

Hello Dragon54u, unfortunately human greed is part of nature, we never knew what we really want in life. some do that's why money doesn't matter to them any-more. well, we would have a very nice world filled with good people sharing their own money to some one.well, it's not easy to deny human nature if relieving hunger involves money.

Hello Dragon54u, I agree with you. human greed is part of nature. However, this is not always a negative thing. I believe what motivate every human is this continuous need to be better. To rise in status. To get more. Without this need humanity would not have progressed. Sure sometimes with certain people the need to get more exceeds reason. However, completely canceling this drive will have more negative effect. So we have to channel it. And this is why laws and law enforcement tools were created Thank you

Have to agree with dragon. and human greed might know no bounds. It isn't money, it will be power or other forces that make you higher and more powerful from the other. It can also be pride since it forces humans to differentiate from each other. As long as people find something to divide themselves, it's not gonna be easy.

Hello Jeanneyvonne, it's hard to stop human greed unless the person is change in a genetic level but that would make it manipulation and it's not even humane. maybe not every one is meant to be rich, some doesn't know what they really want with their lives in the quest for money, to the point that they become greedy

hi, in our times money is really the center of everything,to survive and to have a good life, and i can not see in the future or just i don't feel that in the future money will cease controlling us,because people can not live without this unless money will no longer value.

Hello Tonggcv, Well, that's another problem and sometimes money does influence this things. but bickery andhate also exist in the poverty societies and doesn't need money if you realize that respect and understanding and tolerance are the main key in order to lessen the hate and ignorance against each other.

This is a lovely idea and I believe it would lead to a better life, however as of now the minority have lots of money and the majority are trying to get some of that money. it ain't going to change real soon. The one scenario that I can see that will change that is some massive disaster that sends the human race back to the stone age - in effect starting over. There is a flaw to a money less society, Some commodity or skill will become valuable and highly prized making the minority "rich"

Hello robspeakman, if nothing concrete makes a good change on our future, more rich and more poor category will rise. i don't want our future generation to go back to the stone age, otherwise it would certainly another beginning for our people. we have accomplish so much after so many long years.
