The art of writing developed more or less independently in different parts of the world. The Roman alphabet developed from the Greek, which, in turn, was borrowed from the Phoenician script. Writing itself seems to have developed independently around 3200BC in the areas around the Nile (now Egypt) and in the valley of the Tigris. There is a short history of writing here: http://www.historyworld.net/wrldhis/PlainTextHistories.asp?historyid=ab33 and a nice collection of most of the scripts which have ever existed (or been invented) here: http://omniglot.com/writing/definition.htm

Writing - or rather the representation of language in symbols - developed far earlier than the 27th Century BC, soorajsrs7srs. There is archaeological evidence that people were already writing symbols to represent sounds in 3200BC both in Egypt and in Mesopotamia, as I pointed out above.

I can't really add anything to this conversation as the question had been so elegantly. However I will add that my mother banned Alphabet pasta from our home because my brothers and I would spell out swear words.

Which alphabet are you referring to? One of my favorite stories is the story of the Korean alphabet. Korean King Sejong (around 1446) invented an alphabet in which each letter corresponds to the shape of the mouth when pronounced. He wanted to promote literacy among his people.
