Taming The Beasts From What I've Started

Dear MyLotters,
Yesterday I started a discussion in politics about our re-elected president. This turned into a mudslinging fest that is still continuing to divide all of us. I said some very nasty things about the losing opponent and many of his followers particularly on this site.
I realize that everyone has an opinion and it differs from mine and yours completely. I feel disgusted in myself for starting such a ruckus. With that said, I'm going to keep my political views to myself from now on. Yes, I'm a democrat and a strong Obama supporter. With the exception of one current MyLotter who disrespected me (and I did the same back to him/her...you know who you are!) I want to apologize for my behavior the other day. We are here to vent our differences and laugh and talk. So again, my fellow MyLotters, I apologize.

Bluebell...you should't feel that you have to stay away from any particular topic. You have the right to voice your opinion. The problem I have with these types of discussions, is that people get downright rude and obnoxious. They resort to name calling and putting others opinions down, as well as making personal attacks/ It's happened to me more than one time. I, also, am a strong Obama supporter. I believe wholeheartedly that no matter if we personally like our President, as Americans we should respect the office.

Thank you, lacieice. That means a lot.
One MyLotter basically insulted my intelligence by stating that whatever she had said went over my head, no wonder I voted for B.O. I could have called that person a lot of names and then I'd get booted out of here. Dignity just goes way out the window when it comes to certain topics and politics is one of them. It could get very personal when you start being rude and belligerent, that's why I just squashed the argument because it's exhausting trying to make a point and others are so one sided. Thanks for having my back.

Bluebell, you did title the discussion with calling folks 'haters'. Do you think perhaps, just maybe, that had something to do with the tone it took?

Very true, DebraK...no wonder everyone says that 'hate' is a strong word.

i think you are perfectly right to have your opinions and you should express them. Nor should you get put off and decide to withdraw from contributing to MyLot. Indeed, you should defend your opinions robustly, but avoid name calling and insults at all costs. One can be robust but perfectly civil. If some people name-call, they have lost the argument, ignore them

If you are ashamed of your behavior, you should apologize for yours own sake, but I disagree with you quitting discussions in the political section of Mylot because of some incident. You have every right to voice your opinion. Speaking for myself, I like a good and lively debate, and if the person you're especially aiming your apology at is who I think it is, he/she can handle what most anyone can dish out.

The only part of my behavior that I'm ashamed of is how in some ways I became too combative. When someone insults my intelligence, (a current backwards MyLoter) then it gets the best of me and I too start going off the deep end. But, everyone has their opinion just like me. I respect it, just as much as they respect mine and we can all live in harmony.

FREEDOM is the word. We are free to have our own side, because it is what we believe and we need to respect it all. As what they say, respect begets respect. Let's just enjoy here and learn from each other. Life is too short to be too serious on everything. Have fun. Thanks

I read the discussion also and I wouldn't apologize. You have your opinion and you are entitled to post it up just like everyone else. I don't post on this thread because of all the other topics, this one seems to bring out the worst in people. No one loses all dignity like they do in this topic.

Thank you, Ladycwells!
You can voice your opinion without resorting to names or belittling the other person. I will say that I did some bashing but, I'm not going to go far as to throwing insults. Thank you for having my back.

My sentiments exactly, wenna. Which is why I took a step back from my discussion I started and actually looked at it. Yes, I have my opinions about the losing candidate and my opinions from the winning candidate. While both sides disagree on their own politics, at least they both remained amicable during their speeches on Election night and here we are mud slinging. If they're going to work together to get us all out of this hump, why can't we do the same?
