Sometimes the government will increase the price of the cigarette so that smoking rate will be dropping. Do you think this is a good method? I don't think it works very efficiently. I think it is better to have more public advertisement and offer more real helps for the smoking people. I know some want to quit it but it is too difficult for them to do it by themselves. So if the government can offer more free equipment or consult for them, the situation will be changed.

Maybe for young people it will stop them from getting into the habit of smoking in the first place.
For heavy smokers I think it will decrease the number of packets smoked per day. However, it will not push an addictive smoker to completely stop.
To try to eliminate smoking, like you said in your post, you have to educate people about the dangers of this addiction. Also, not allowing them to practice it in public places will help

Exactly youless, it is better to have preventive action then corrective action. Don't let them get hooked in the first place. And As I said in my initial reply raising the price may help as a preventive action but not so much as a corrective one. Because if you are hooked you will pay whatever is the price

I don't think that's going to stop anyone. They tried it here in Canada. People who want to smoke are going to smoke, and that is all there is to it. Increases in price is not going to stop a smoker who cares more about their next niccotine fix, than they do about paying the bills, or feeding their families.

That's not good method,i agree with you, even it will increase the population of poor peoples and maybe increase number of crime.I prefer if government provide some free consult for smokers. And maybe the doctor can found new ways to quit smoking with herbal medicines. To quit smoking have to come from smokers self. They can't be push to quit immediately, but need some process, step by step.

It's a good method for bringing in some extra taxes, but personally I've never heard of someone who quit just because of the price. After smoking a while you get sick a lot faster, you're tired faster, etc. If people are willing to endure all those physical consequences, they're not suddenly going to stop because the price got higher.
I suppose it's not necessarily entirely ineffective though. It might be part of a solution. If a solution will ever exist, that is...

I dont think it works. Prices have risen on them for years and still people find a way to buy them. look at the cost in usa. With all the taxes added to them. They still sell like hot cakes.

You got it right ! Smoking is a vice and not a need ! It is but right to increase its taxes , so people will make a move to stop it , it does no good to the physical body , its slowly killing itself. Government made the right moved , smokers will now adjust themselves instead of smoking in fasr pace , maybe they will plan to have it in alternate hours , hope so they will.

i think it depends. we think it can be good for the country - the economy for the taxes. but it can do harm as well for the industry where it belongs - the manufacturing and the sellers. The people who are smoking or are used to drinking may actually just be saving their money for the price they should be paying when they need to smoke or drink.

Maybe average and low-class smokers will feel the increase in prices and the percentage of smokers will decrease but not to those who can afford regardless of the price. Even the president won't stop smoking.
I would rather want them focus first more on the infra-structures and practice transparency with the taxes we pay.

No. It just makes smokers more broke!
They will keep smoking until their last dollar. I don't believe it will help the true smoker at all.
