How To Make the Best Use of the 16-Hour Long Power Outage!

Hi friends and lotters
Yesterday there was a Power cut down for 16-hours (from morning 6:00 to 10:00 in the evening). Unlike the earlier occasions when they cut down the power for so long, there was no prior notification to the consumers.
Anyways, I did enjoy a break from work after a while. I have been traveling no doubt during the end of the last month but then, staying at home doing nothing due to Non-availability of Internet and Power is rare these days.
I spent the day doing some cleaning around, washed clothes, invited a friend over during the day and we spend the afternoon playing carrom. Oh yes, the friend got me lunch from his home (so food cooked from a mom definitely added to make the day more pleasant)
The evening started getting boring as it was dark (winters are setting in so we have darkness earlier than before) - so I moved to my dad's place and spent the time playing with my nephew (they have an inverter there so it is more light).
Returned home at 10:00 in the night after dinner. Was a better day in that I could do almost so many things which I could not have if there was power and internet around. The only sad thing was that I couldnt wish my MyLot friend and Di (jaiho) on her b'day. I did but I know it was quite late... 10:00 pm is definitely not the proper time to wish anyone a Birthday on the special day....
Now to make it a discussion, what do you do when you are left without Internet and / or Power for long? And what do you think about getting a Delayed Birthday Wish?
Have a great Weekend and Happy Diwali - get some firecrackers and sweets
Cheers,
theSids.

It's not too late for best wishers
Sunny chettan is much late than you are.
He texted me this afternoon after I greeted him and wish on their wedding anniversary (he's celebrating alone cause chechi is still there in India)
That's what I am waiting for - power outage so I can update my kids albums.
I have so many printed photos and haven't pasted on their albums (yayyy)
I can also make some handicrafts for this coming season as gifts which I always do.
But of course can't do it during night time.
If it happens on night time- simply we drive to bhabycatch's place and spend the night strolling around.
I don't think we can have an elephant ride during night time in India...is it possible?

hello D
You're not late my dear.
It was yesterday but never celebrate it- maybe later (ahahaa)
I mean, we have it done last week prior to other mylotters request due to our busy schedule.
Maybe I will have another party on the 23rd of this month- it's my second child's birthday and I decided to merge the celebration

Hi di
Lucky me that I was little early
Well, I see that you have some good plans for the unexpected events like these power outages. I know the Handicrafts and you and you also write poems which is very great. Maybe someday you would get time to get all these done even without any power failures...
btw, how is bhaby's mom? hope she is doing well and recovering faster and healthier.

Hi sid...
Whenever there's a power outage here in our apartment, we just sleep.
Since we arrive here @7pm, there's only a little time to do other things. But in case it fell on a Sunday or a particular holiday, we just chat and tell different stories to each other.

Hi adnileb
How do people manage to sleep during summers without power has always been a mystery to me! I never could feel comfortable anywhere when there was heat and sweat but I think it is because you get tired at work and the busy day which is why you dont feel uneasy without the power.
I wish that the power outages happened on work days for a few times so that one could get some time off and refresh! but I know the work offices do have inverters and other backup which can last for more hours

So good thing you experienced that long hours of power outage in a cold season.
There was one time, a power outage during holy week, where the heat is soooooo,
and I was so sleepy then. So, I went to my room, removed my shirt and slept. After a while, I was in all sweat. Haha! But I ignored it as I am soooo sleepy.

Hi Bhai!

I was so worried. I sent you an email. I thought you had fell ill . I'm glad it was just an power outage! Please write me when you can. You are closer to your dad's place? Where was Bahu?
To answer your question. Back in July I lost my power for 4 days. I went to the mall, I ate out and just listened to the radio. It was so hot so I didn't do anything else.

Hi behen
oh no, I wasnt ill. But was busy otherwise and have been feeling more lazy these past few days. This is why I dont have much discussions here at MyLot or even much active participation. These days I have found a new interest - reading and spend some more time reading - though only stuff which I work on - website development and that too what I already have read many times
Dad's place is just a 15 minutes ride in a share cab or a bus from my place. And hence I visit them more frequently ever since I moved to this place. The last place was on the other end of the town and it took us about 1:30 hours one side. So the visits weren't that frequent. Your bahu is at her place of work. And would be here on Monday night - Diwali is on 13th and so we should be together at Dad's place.
It was so hot so I didn't do anything else. - that is exactly what I feel and do when these outages happen regularly during the summers. Though they happen for two hours twice daily those days.

At least sids, you were able to socialize with a friend and bond with your relatives because of the power outage.
Me, the last time there was brown out, i was able to saw the curtain i would like the hem to be smaller. There was 10 of them, but i was able to sew them all.
Though, sometimes when it's brown out in the evening for an hour or two, i would simply just put listen to the music in my cellphone and relax.
At least, the brownouts enables us to do things we would like to do yet cannot because of the temptation of the net or the TV.
Happy Diwali to you sids.

Hi SimplyD
Some summers and we will have those 2 hour power cuts twice every day - once in morning and the second during the evenings. The ones in the mornings are still better as sometimes they help me wake up early but the ones in the evenings are so boring - it gets dark all around and even the time that I get away from computer, doesnt get utilized better (I mean I find it difficult to cook in the candle light or even the oil lamp lights).
Hope that you dont do the hems during the evening power outages. As I think sewing is more tasking on the eyes and when done in the evenings without proper lights, it makes the eyes weak

Hi sid- I am sorry to know that you did face such a long power cut, which is so unusual. I have never ever faced but I feel if that ever happened to me, I shall be too uneasy although I am well prepared for such a situation with multiple options. I have a fast data-card (foe emergency)that would not fail easily and with inverter and generator available I think this would help my cause.

Dear Praaji
Actually we are accustomed to these 10-12 hour power cuts as we do keep having them some day (at least once in two or three months) in the name of construction or modification or even upgradation. And on most of the occasions, they announce the dates at least a day or two earlier so that people can make arrangements for the water (we dont get supply water when thee is no power). But this time, there was no such warning.
In fact last summer when there was regular power cuts again (it was stopped and not happening since for past few months) we had thought to get us an Inverter. But we did not as I wanted to get her a Laptop. Now, if we still will have power cuts next summer, we might consider the Inverter.

Yes that can happen in case the transformer of the area burns out or some thing extra ordinary happens but an inverter if used carefully can keep your power problem away for 8-10 hours easily. Inverter is not that big of a headache but battery certainly is as the cost of the same has gone almost thrice in last few years. Take care

Hi your post about powercut and spending time usefully actually brought back memories to me.I remember that when the power went off when we were kids.we used to go to the top floor of the house and sit in the balcony.I have many sweet memories of some quality time spent with my sister. We used to star gaze and talk about everything happening at school.
There were no responsibiiities to think of and it was only unfinished school work. That time was not the greatest..what with the mosqitoes having a feast....
But,it is rather wistful when you think back about it,because both of us have settled in different corners and it is a long time that we have had the chance to sit and talk under the moonlight.

hi ramiuniq
Glad that you found this discussion interesting and you could relate to the good past. I too felt similar just on the box above. The childhood days and things associated with those are always so pleasant as we grow up... Maybe coz we cannot re-live those wonderful days and times again.
Me, my brother and our friends would play carrom and even antakshari during the evenings when there was regular power cuts. The better thing today is that the regular ones are past and now we dont have them regularly. Though there are weeks in summers when we still go without power for 4 or more hours per day.

Can you explain to me the game of carrom? It sounds like you made good use of your time. I imagine I would read more if my power were out, but if it grew late it would be more difficult to do that. I would hope I would have some company to pass the time.

Hi AmbiePam
I admire you for showing interest in the addictive game of carrom. Here are two links which can help you understand the Game -
http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Carrom_Board#Equipment - has lots of informative text
http://www.carromcentre.co.uk/content/8-carrom-rules - has some images which do help
I do read at times but it is mostly work related - PHP, Website development kind of stuff that I have as books. And as I was not in a mood to read for profession, I had to find something else to do. Luckily, I could get to do somethings which helped me make a good use of the power outage.

Dear Sidhu,
Luckily we don’t have much problem with power in this place. Only one day was out of power due to failure in the North grid. And winter starts so there won’t be many problems with power cuts hereon. Only summer season is torturing without power.
At the time of power cuts, I can do many things at home. But in office, the inverter is out of order so nothing can be done at present. Will get time to have a great nap.
In that case I am lucky; I got your birthday wishes in time. But I know I failed to wish you (here am not the culprit, you had given your mobile to your wife and I didn’t knew that. If I am aware about it I would have sent my wishes through mail).

Hi didi
Ah the last year, I remember I had forgotton your birthday and you told me about it a few days later. This year, I did remember as I had noted it out on my calendar
(Sometimes I start getting methodical and practical)
For your missing out on my Birthday yes, I know you would have called but then the phone was not with me and as even at her place the connectivity is bad, neither of us could get any calls for me that day.
Unfortunately this year when the power was out - that North Grid one, we too had a power outage for about 20 hours here though the newspapers reported that we were down only for 4 hours. That was unfair on their part to report this wrongly. Anyways, I do hope we wont have such power outages anytime more now. It was about 50% of India going without power supply.

I sleep. I have severe depression with panic attacks. This time of year I sink into a sad situation called S.A.D. It has to do with a lack of light this time of year. So, without power I would probably read, sleep, eat and spend time with my daughter and grandson.

Hi celticeagle
without power I would probably read, sleep, eat and spend time with my daughter and grandson.
I havent reached that age but yes, I can very well understand - the grandchildren. My late grandfather too was similar like you. He would be more happy spending his time reading and playing with his grandchildren.
The depression with panic attacks reminds me of the days when I was really scared of darkness - and it wasnt until I was 33 that I overcame it. But even today, after I watch a horror movie, the fear of darkness creeps back into me and continues for some days. Luckily we dont get too many long duration power cuts these days.

Hi silverfox
I tried my best to make it a little more productive despite the Internet and I felt happy that there were things I could attend to. I think it was the surprise element which helped as otherwise when they pre-declare and do the power cuts, most of those days nothing much happens
and I continue feeling lazy

if that things happened to me..I must be stressful
I could not cook and take a bath since the power to turn on the jet water pump was off
(what a confusing explanation
, i hope u can understand me)
and for delayed birthday wish...I Often missed my family's birthday, not because there is no electricity..but because I Just totally forget it

Of course I can understand and even relate to what you say - I could not cook and take a bath - something similar would have happened that day with me too if I didnt have a bucket filled with water for the bath (I rarely do it but I had it this time as I forgot to soak my clothes for washing the earlier night
)

The past time I had power go out..which was no where near as long as you..we lit candles and played cards.

Hi JenInTN
That is what I would have loved - lighting up candles and playing cards - actually we used to do it when I was studying and every summers, we would have my cousins arrive or us going to their place (we stay in different states and today, the age factor and family responsibilities have made us physically more distant) and as those days the power outages were more frequent, we would spend most of the evening time playing cards or even singing songs with the ending alphabets (we call that antakshari)... and our elders would be shouting at us to skip the games and study

Oh...that is really depressing of thinking on how are you feeling of not having an electricity in your place...although, we actually experiences power outages every month, but still, we have been living to that and we don't anymore complain...whereas you guys, who have winter in your country, it is really depressing because you can't use your home heating system...

hi aabuda
Well, there is nothing to be depressed about. It is still not that cold here and again, we do not have home heating systems. Instead there are many who have air conditioners and i feel sad for them when the power outages happen during the summers (they are more frequent during this time of the year as the loads and requirements are higher due to the fact that many houses have air conditioners).
And it wasnt a complain, instead a discussion on how I made a good use of a day when there was no power and then no internet

Hello Bro
For me surely you were not that late.. AS most of the time I used to forget friends and relatives birthday and wish them one or two days later.
That's why I have already tell everyone that please never mind as I can't keep up with birthday dates. Just remind me about it on a day so I can wish you all.
lol.. that's how I am.
About powercut, that's surely a boring thing. But when I have people around me I can manage such power cuts. But that one is toooooo long.

Hi Bro
Your birthday falls on a special day and I could remember your discussion which you had shared last year. I am lazy and forgetful but then there are people who are close to me and I do take care to remember the important dates of these. (need I tell you again that you are a special friend of mine???)
If you have a long duration power outage next time you are always welcome here or you can invite me at your place... we will spend the day chatting, playing some games and also if interested we can go out for some sight seeing

Bro.. No need to say for sure..
and that would be great if one day we can meet.
About special birth date, yes that's what putting me on even minus point. I mean as I am having my birth day on special date, most of the friends and relative remember it, even those who used to forget birth day like me... And in reverse I always forget their special days.. But now everybody knows about my low range brain, so not big problem.

We are so used to having our lives run around appliances that use power that we are at a loss when we are suddenly without it. I guess the best thing that you can do is catch up on your reading. A few years back, we would go without power for days. It was during those bad typhoons that hit the Philippines and in three succeeding years, we were without power for a week every time the storm season came. That's why I have plenty of rechargeable lights. But for entertainment, it was like being thrown back fifty or sixty years ago. I would read or do some cross stitch during the day, plus some gardening. Then at nights, we would listen to the radio. My mom and I would go to bed early since there wasn't anything we could really do. But it was good for both of us because we got more than the required eight hours of sleep during that time.

hi the sids I am in the U'S and we seldom have power outages. we have had them in this old building gold crest several times I am on the second floor and use a walker so I am stuck up here if the power goes off as elevators r un on power there are stairs bu t I need sometone to help me down aith my walker so here its no f un like you had its more like sitting in the dark as I am not able to go to someone else's place who does have power so I hate and dread outages here.hopeuflly it will be a long time before we lose power here.

Dear Ms Hately
Well, I have always been told that at The US there is a different style altogether. They use more of nuclear power and also the power outages are quite remote a thing to happen.
At my place, things were all getting better until last year. This year there has been a scarcity of power and hence we have more of the short duration power outages and low voltages. But this was unexpected a thing to have happened.

If I had a power shortage at this time of the year (it`s Spring here) nothing would keep me away from my garden). Although I am acostumed to an electric heater for my coffee, my range ans stove are gas. So I can make anything including a cup of coffee with no problem. I wouls not have music, TV or internet, but there are many thing to do at home that don`t require it. Take care!

Oh, so similar to our place. When there is scheduled brown-out in our place, people usually don't stay home. They go to a mall here which has a generator and there spend the whole time until the power is back. The mall has everything. It has a theater, beauty salons, restaurants, supermarket, bookstore, boutiques, etc. so you can practically do everything there.

Hi Cutie
The malls are opening up here too but they arent as what you mention. We have such bigger malls at bigger places though. There are some people who I know get to the malls and stay there because of the central air conditioning and other factors (girls mostly
). But you know dear,I suffer from arthritis and as such cannot be at the malls or any other places which are air condtioned for long.
Also, I find myself comfortable with family more today.

Here power cut is so common, besides the declared power cuts in morning hours, there are so many sudden ones several times, on Saturday and Sundays usually the cut is 10 hours in the name of 'maintenance'
Without electricity my cooking suffers, the grinder does not work, i have the traditional stone grinder, but i cant use, no more strength left
thanks for this discussion.
