Why Don't I Get a Flu-Shot?

You know that flu-shots are 'injections of weakened forms of the flu, meant to help train your body to fight-off infection.' I have a couple of theories as to why I don't get one: one, because I'm too weak to fight an infection I get on-purpose; two, because my body is a miracle beyond modern medicine's powers to analyze. Or somewhere in between ... How do I find out? Do I want to find out? How do I find out if I want to find out without actually finding out unless I DO want to find out?

Hey myth, you don't need to find out. I'd say it's somewhere in between. Just don't get a flu shot on the basis of general principle. Like you refuse to be a guinea pig for Big Pharma and the medical profession. I'm old. I've had the flu maybe 4-5 times in my whole life. I'm guessing here because I can only clearly remember three of these times. The last one I remember was about 5-6 years ago. All you need to do is take 500-1000mg of high quality Astragalus every day. Traditional Chinese Medicine. Provided of course it doesn't adversely interact with any medication you may be taking. A little research on your part is needed here. Astragalus helps to build up your immunity. Here's a link: www.allnatural.net/herbpages/astragalus.shtml Of course depending on where you look, you'll find advice somewhat contrary to the optimistic claims of those who support the use of Astragalus. But that's the same as with almost anything these days. And I prefer to use my own experience as a guide. This is not to say it's a miracle plant, but I believe it's helping to keep me from getting sick. I worked in an office where every 5-6 months everybody had a cold. Coughing and sneezing all over the place. I never got one. Hope you don't get the flu.

I don't know. I take it in capsules. I swallow them with water rather than chew them. I've been taking it for a few years now and I can't say for sure that it's the reason for my not getting sick, but when you're in a hot, stuffy, germ filled office and you're the only one not getting sick there must be a reason for it. Just make sure it's good quality. I read once that a study was done on vitamins and a lot of them had either a lower percentage or none of what they were supposed to have in them. Unfortunately, they couldn't list the suspect brands. A good book to get is "Solve it With Supplements" by Robert A. Schulman, MD. And the website I recommend is www.earthclinic.com I'm of the belief that most illnesses and problems can be cured without the use of modern medicine. It just takes a little, sometimes a lot, of research to keep yourself healthy or to remedy whatever ails you. And, contrary to popular belief, there are cures for the common cold. But, nobody listens. I've had people tell me I'm crazy. But at least I'm healthy. So far.

I never get a flu shot. I don't do needles. And I do not trust doctors. Why? Needles hurt and sometimes doctors lie.

If you don't know why you don't get a flu shot, does it matter if you find out why? I don't get flu shots because I don't want to get sick on purpose. I don't remember the last time I had the flu, but it was a long time ago. I think when we let our bodies be what God made them to be, they can fight off viruses on their own. I know that the flu kills people now and then, but so does lightning and I don't see scientists out there trying to figure out how to stop it from happening. Must not be much money in that. Anyway, if you don't want to get the flu, don't. If you want a good reason, the vaccines that are made up today are not the same as the constantly evolving virus that will be the flu tomorrow or even by the end of the day, so how can that help?

I don't know if you want to find out why or not, but here's my thoughts on flu shots. If we live a healthy life style, don't take antibiotics for things that they won't cure, eat as little food that comes from animals that are fed antibiotics and get plenty of fresh air and exercise, our bodies will build immune systems that are capable of fighting off viral infections. We seem so adamant to disinfect everything now days that our bodies don't have a chance to do what they're designed to do. Needles to say, I don't ever get a flu shot and I'm supposedly "at risk" because of my age. About every 40 years or so I get a very bad case of flu that puts me to bed for a week. Other than that I get a runny nose now and then and occasionally a 24 hour bug.

I read in GOOD Magazine how today's playgrounds are ALSO turning our kids into wimps, by being full of equipment with 'no sharp-corners, no rusty nails, etc.'---stuff that molded the rest of us into the semi-careful, semi-toughened people we are today.

I had just been injected with flu vaccine last month. It was prescribed by my doctor way back in 2004 because of my lung problem.

I have to agree. Why would someone want to continuously year after year inject their body with a disease to fight a disease. There are other ways, healthier ways to fight off flu and cold like symptoms. How about a healthy diet! I love how you phrased that "my body is a miracle beyond modern medicine" and that holds true today. It's the nasty things we fill our body with, that breaks down the immune system and this can be reversed just by changing our diets. Great discussion

i would never get that shot. i don't even know why they made it up. people have always been able to fight the flu. you can't sign up for everything these medical people come up with.
