I may have to go to the Antique Road Show just to find out!

My little neighbor woman sent over a gift for the new addition that visits me now quite often. When I got home from work, her gift was sitting in the corner of the livingroom. I stared at it and thought...wow...it looks kind of creepy but it is amazing. It seems to be a Victorian style child's chair. Now I don't know anything about antiques but I know I haven't been able to find anything about it. I warmed up to it after a couple of days and I took a picture of the baby in it. I don't know if you can see it that good in the picture but it is an amazing piece even if it isn't an antique.
Are you knowledgeable about antiques? Have you ever wished you knew something more about a subject than what you do? Has anyone ever sent you a beautiful gift you knew nothing about?

Hi Jen. I looked this chair up and it seems to be a Edwardian Winged Arm chair. I found adult antique chairs like it on antique sites for about $1200. So I think this one is worth about $400. If it is a real Edwardian and not a remake. If the picture does it justice it looked like their was some fading on the front of the seat and arms so that would bring down the price. It looks like it is in good shape rather than that.

Yes, Edwardian is the type of alot of the furniture used during the Victorian Age. I am very into anything Victorian. CLothing, furniture and architecture.

It is in very good shape. The fading is actually the light shining in on it. It certainly could use a bit of cleaning up. I think I will take another picture and post it so you can see it better. I'm not planning on selling it but I am very curious about it. I wish I could just find something about this particular chair. I can't find anything current either as far as children's chair styles. Thanks for looking it up. I'll have to check out Edwardian.

With your bundle of joy seated there the chair hardly looks antique Even otherwise I doubt if this chair is hundred years old as that is one of the qualifications for an item to be categorised as antique. It could be a copy of something Victorian as you have pointed out and copying as you know is in fashion.
May be you could ask your friend about this in due course of time.

I was thinking of asking her. She is an older lady. I wouldn't think that it is not 100 years old though. It is in excellent condition. I can tell it is an old piece that she has had in her storage building for a long time. You never know I guess. I wish I could find something online about it..even if it was a reproduction. I can't find anything. I did find a larger chair that looks like it though..just not the child's.

Oh...thank you. She is certainly my pride and joy. I have a bit of a higher spring in my step but I will tell you..it has been several years since I have had a little one around me so much. I have been keeping her for my daughter while she works most every night..thus some of my absence here..lol. School, work, baby = very tired and little time.
I have searched the thing over for a mark or a name. I can compare the carvings to other Victorian styles but other than that..I can't find a thing.

I do know a few things about antiques....but just certain things. I love the chair and if I am right it has great value. I have been given gifts that I really don't know too much about. One of my clients gave me a spoon holder and milk pitcher his mother brought over from Denmark....unfortunately I broke the handle on the spoon holder. It is crystal and beautiful.

Hi Jill! I bet you were disappointed when that happened. This is the first time I have got a gift that has stumped me. It's kind of neat to research and try to find stuff out about it. I am learning stuff about other stuff because I can't find that chair nowhere..lol.
Thanks for responding.

She should be able to give u some insight on it's age, where she got it etc. It of course looks to be old but they make some mighty pretty reproductions things to. Like i said, PICK HER BRAIN, LOL.

Thank you Jo!I was hoping that you would drop in. I haven't had the chance to talk to the lady that gave it to me yet. I think I may mosey over this evening if I see her out. I have to rush out this morning to work but I am going to take a picture of that chair and post it here on your response so you can see it better. There is nothing anywhere on the internet that I can find about it.

Hi JenInTN
The chair looks good and cozy and Ms. Keely is the Princess
About antiques... I have only one Timepiece which belonged to my late grandfather. He had been handed over this from his father sometime in 1920s. Now, if that can be called as antique... It is non-functional since years as neither the repair guys know how to get it working not the only one we could find in 1998 could get any spares to fix it. But I treasure it and have it on the cupboard just because I used its alarm to wake me up all my school days (it was functional till 1992 when it fell down and something wrong happened inside - courtesy: Rats).
Now that you ask, Has anyone ever sent you a beautiful gift you knew nothing about? - I never thought in depth about any of the few gifts that I have received. maybe because there was never a need as normally my friends and even me gifted things which were common and more of daily use.

Hi Thesids!!! Great to see you!
That sounds like a wonderful antique and the fact that it was passed down through the family makes it all the more precious. I have some rings that my grandmother left me that I cherish with all my heart. Some of them are not worth anything in dollar amount but they are certainly priceless to me too.
I think that most gifts are those that we can use everyday. I don't think I have ever gotten a gift before that I knew nothing about. I might have to ask the lady but I haven't wanted to risk seeming rude. It is just that it is an intriguing piece of furniture.

Hi Jen, My (late) Dad knew a lot about antiques and used to deal in them as a hobby. I could never really get to learn about them even though he took me to auctions as a kid and explained how to tell a reproduction from the genuine thing, and so on. In later years I even bought books on them and would study them, and really loved auctions, but I would go along and still could not recognize an antique and I couldn't really take my book with me as it was rather large! I find this reaction strange and feel that I must have a mental block on it, or perhaps I am just not meant to be in the antiques business. _Derek

No...you are a master in meditation and self control.
I think it would be really neat to know something about antiques. I thought that it might be a reproduction too but I can't find a thing that is even similar. Weird. Not even a mark or name to identify it. The carvings are comparable to other Victorian work but I sure can't tell about that.
Thanks for responding

Hi Jen,
That chair looks like a mini version of some chairs that my grandmother had in her home. I love it and Keely is just adorable by the way. I'd ask around about that. I don't know much about antiques either. I have a few and I keep meaning to do a little research on them but you know how that goes....it's on "the list".

The closest thing I can find to it is a huge version and it is called a Grandfather Chair. It is an amazing little chair. It actually struck me as being a little creepy at first...lol. When I got it, it looked like it had been stored a very long time.
I know all about "the list"

Thank you bunnybon! I have searched that chair over for some kind of mark. I thought the flower carving might be an indication but anyone can reproduce that these days. Sometimes it's just neat to know where something came from.
Thanks for the response!

It definitely looks like an antique to me. Its not my style but I guess it can grow on you. It looks very comfortable is it?? I have an old copy of a book called "Little Women" with one piece of tissue paper inside the beginning of the book. It is copyright 1880 by Louisa M. Alcott and again copyright 1896 by J.S.P. Alcott. I have no idea if its worth anything or not but would love to find out.

I'm not sure really. It is sturdy enough that I could sit in it and know itwouldn't break though.
It is amazing what things can be worth. I bet that book of yours has status for sure. You could look up other copies that have the same copyright dates and see what they are going for. I think it's just neat to know sometimes.
Thanks for responding.

That's a sweet picture. She's adorable. You should dress her in a Victorian style dress and hat and take her picture in that chair.
The chair looks to me like it could be an antique. You should ask the person who gave it to you about it's history. There might be an interesting story that goes with it. You could also take some detailed pictures of it and show them to antique dealers and see if they know anything. That would save you carting around the actual chair for information.
Even if it's not an antique, it's still a very nice piece and it was nice of your neighbor to give it to you.

Hi millertime!
Thank you! She has certainly become the apple of my eye.
I think I will go over and see if she has a story about the chair. I would hate for her to think it was about money..that's why I have been refraining. It is just such an interesting piece that I am intrigued about its history.
It was a very nice gift. I was taken aback by it when I got home that day.

Very cute baby, and I love the chair. She looks like a princess sitting there. It must have cost your neighbor a fortune.

That was a very nice gift. Before reading your entire post I looked at the photo you had provided. I thought to myself wow that is a beautiful baby doll. Lol, then after awhile I decided it looked way too realistic especially to be an antique. The baby is beautiful by the way. :) Anyways hopefully the chair is authentic. Could you possibly ask a local antique dealer? It might be faster then waiting for the road show. Let us know what you find out.

Thank you! She is my little sweetheart!
I know of someone local that deals in antiques I thought of taking it to just to see. I really have no intention on getting rid of it but it is such an intriguing little chair that I am curious. I will definitely keep you posted.
