Tohru Honda

Read or watch Fruit Basket? Do you think Tohru Honda is a Mary Sue? She does have Mary Sue traits but I think people abuse the term Mary Sue already. As for me I don't like Tohru Honda because she comes off as a really boring character to me. Anyway the entire Fruit Basket story is boring to me. But the point is there any real people with her personality? What makes her so easy to be related by most girls? Even I myself a girl don't even understand the appeal of this character. And Fruit Basket is popular.

It's popular because of its characters. Plus they are also cute. I like fruits basket and one episode there made me cry once, the one about that little usagi/rabbit. Tohru. I can say, yes, she is a mary sue. But I don't hate her or like her. She's far better than Bella Swan if you ask me. At least she got traits that are good and worth admiring. But she isn't realistic. Not many people are like her, maybe that is her appeal?

@trinity: Wow, took me awhile to find this discussion again! Maybe you are cold to these characters because you find them under developed? I assume you are a writer and you are looking at the story in a writer's perspective. @mei: -sob- Yeah, it was hard not to cry. I am immune to romance drama but family drama... it's so hard not to cry. Being abandoned and denied by your own parent is too painful to even think.

Agreed. She's way better than Bella Swan. But I have to admit she's pretty unrealistic. Even my own friends who seem to have similar traits to Tohru can actually get angry and curse. The usagi boy? You mean Momiji Sohma. I think he's okay. But the cold blooded me finds it difficult to cry or sympathize with the Fruit Basket characters. (And Kyo is better off as a Monster that resembles Charizard from Pokemon)

To be honest, i really don't like tohru too... she's really unrealistic.. but the way she reacted when she saw the true form of kyo and admitted that she was afraid, i thought, i'd already knew her, but i'm wrong... when you read the manga, i've realized that she made an effort to please everybody... she doesn't want to have an enemy coz she doesn't want to feel alone AGAIN.... most of us, know how to hide or feelings, and tohru is that kind of character.. but by the time goes by, situations and experience mold her to act natural that she's really have a heartwarming personality... until she reached the point that she's that girl.. a boring yet understandable that can make people change like she do in her self.. the author made tohru to be the way so that we will appreciate every characters in chapters or episode.. she's kind'a mary sue but i think in very special way..

At least she is not entirely useless. Haha. It reminds me again of Bella who just HAD TO HAVE A BABY WITH HER DARLING EDWARD and I think that resulted in a bloody war? What the heck.

I watched Fruit Basket and I think I know why you don't like Tohru. She is such a passive and meek girl. I personally don't like or dislike her. Her being meek have it bad and good side. Her passiveness really annoyed me, but her way of understanding other people is remarkable.

True. Passive and meek characters are boring because I'm clearly the opposite of that. I think only passive and meek girls in real life will be able to relate to her.

Maybe Ran kotobuki is more your type, trinity? She's the one from super gals. The one with the orange hair hehe, she's active, sociable, strong, fashionable and very tough. Maybe you like her?

@TrinityDownpour I don't know boss. Aw, don't be like that. Not every character with bad design is awful. I mean, look at dragonball and naruto. The art is not good but the characters are easy to love and like. I can't think of a female character which fit your description at the moment.
