its quite cold here today and since Arizonans are not used to much chill we are debateing turning on the heat. my daughter just came in to tell me shes having C. make chili, since she is freezing today i told her, go ask Jr. to put on the heat if she wants. she pays on the bills. and she said, no, we should wait a while oh well, i dont worry as my room is the warmest in the house. i share a wall with the oven/stove all summer ive been having problems keeping cool. but now my room is perfect. so, are you putting off turning on your heat because of finances?

Heat has been necessary since, I believe, mid-to-late September here. The place where we had been before moving to here was poorly insulated, so we actually turned the heat on a bit earlier. Plus, my boyfriend is utterly defenseless in the face of the slightest chill, so the heat had to go on a bit earlier than I otherwise would have had it on.
Of course, the heat at the other place was cheaper than it will be in our new place. This space is a lot bigger, the building quite a bit older, and the heat is electric rather than propane.

Yep. Definitely one of the cold states.
I actually couldn't deal with being in a state where there weren't four distinct seasons. I missed having a real autumn and winter, and I spent my year in Florida trying to find a way to tunnel out.
I'm a Northerner.

I have neither central heating nor gas heater and the like ,apart from an air conditioning that I never turn on in winter. The minimum temperature is about 10 degrees below zero celsius in winter where I live.It has been 11 days since winter began, recently the minimum temperature hovers around 8 degrees above zero celsius every day.I wonder what the temperature is in winter there.

i dont know what celsius means so im not sure if you mean its cold enough for heat or what? no here it is usually hot most of the time except in mid winter and then we need to turn on the heat now and then. problem is most of them in my house is so not used to cold that the least bit sends them to the heat

Celsius i.e. centigrade,so 10 degrees below zero celsius is equivalent to 14 degrees Fahrenheit.

I always put off turning on the heat or the air. We have two furnaces, but have only turned on the one downstairs so far. We like to sleep cooler. I am a meany though and even keep the one furnace turned low whenever possible.

I'm like you GardenGerty, I put off turning the heat on, because I can always add more clothes. But my husband on the other hand is cold-blooded. So my husband doesn't wait.

We're going into summer and the heat has already been unbearable on some days. I'm trying to save on power bills because they have gone up so high over the last 12 months. I think it's something like a 70% increase overall!!
I'm pleased to say I am soon getting solar panels which means I will be generating my own power via the sun. Yay!!
Are you going that way in the US Bon?

great idea. a lot of people are doing that here. but its pricey to get everything installed and switched around. another case of having some money up front to save a lot more later. one of those rich get richr and poor get poorer things

Partly hubby and i put off turning on the heat due to finances. Like right now we are putting off turning on the heat because i am looking for work and hes the only one working making money for the bills. Also we put off turning on the heat til it is really cold out and more needed. It has only been in the 40's and 50's here outside so don't need the heat on then. Also it doesn't get too cold inside so we leave the heat off all night and by morning it is only 69 degrees in the house or so the thermostat says. So then we turn it on and when the house gets heated up to temp we turn it off all day.

Not here. We already have the heat on. And wouldn't you know it, right after the heat went on, the days got warmer. Go figure. But it is going to get cold starting this week. So it is good that we have the heat. I don't like the cold either.

I don't feel the cold to be honest and for me it's far easier just to put an extra layer on, I feel the heat more, for me it's far easier to warm up than cool down. My room we have the boiler in it so it gets hot enough. I live with my parents who are in their late sixties and feel the cold more, so I have to make allowances for them. Last night my room was like a sauna, mum needed the heating on for the washing to dry and because she was cold.

thats my problem. my room is so insulated that others on the outside rooms have to make due with adding layers etc. to keep me from smothering with heat. i may have to open my window soon.

i know how that is. when i lived in ohio, the gas bill in winter was way to much. but when we lived out where we could have a wood/coal stove, it was sure worth it getting to have 4 seasons.

My heat here is Ohio is paid for by the landlord which is steam heat, so I'm one of the lucky one's.
But, I have to put up with noise from other tenants, like the guy above me. He drives me crazy with his video games..ugh. Then again, I'm sitting here in my shorts and a tee shirt, so I guess you're darned if you do, and darned if you don't.
I'm still hoping to move soon, but I would hope to get another apartment that pays for the heat, since it's so expensive.

oh i remember those days in apartments in ohio. yes i was quite warm and it was freezing outside but there was times the neighbors were to much. then we would move into a house and have to high of a gas bill. the only really great times i remember was when we moved from town and had nice wood/coal stoves.

Well here in Oklahoma its been pretty mild so far, its 54 degrees right now, but the nights have been getting cold like in the 20's. We use wood to heat the house, and this past weekend we finally stacked some wood on the porch, and got our fireplace going, we've been using it about a week now. Luckily we don't have to worry about finances in keeping us warm, my husband cuts all our wood we use, he likes it, believe it or not he said its a way for him to relax and he enjoys being out in the woods and in nature.

We have a fixed rate that is set in June of every year for an entire year as to how much our natural gas is going to cost and I'm so happy that it is lower this year than it has been in several years. For that reason, we don't hold off on turning on our heat. Of course, I'm also one of those people that doesn't keep my house roasting during the winter, I set the thermostat at 69 degrees and I will layer on clothes as needed.
My best friend was just complaining that it is always freezing in our house, but I really don't feel like that is the case.

hi dear bunnybon, we only turn on the heat when its really needed. Like in my bedroom I will turn it on about half an hour before I go to sleep so its comfortable and then will turn it off over the night and most of the day when I wont use the bedroom. Same goes for the living room. We need to just put it on a little so the mold stays out and only if I will spend more than half an hour in there I will turn it on.

theres the rub. here in AZ we have huge electric bills in summer and most months because of the heat. but in the few months of winter we have low gas bills. so not bad. air conditioning bills nearly 300 bucks during hot months and thats only to stay comfotable. so the heating bill should be a big relief.

I work full time so I am out of the house for at least 10 hours every day. This naturally keeps the heating bills down quite a bit because my central heating is set for 1 hour in the morning and then about 5 hours in the evening. At weekends I keep the heating on all day if required, but of course this is only 2 days per week.
If I was not working then it would be a totally different matter. I would probably keep the heating on at first, but would decide when the bill arrived whether the increase in cost was justified.

It is 36 degrees here right now and I just turned ont he heater for a little bit. I plan on turning it off in a few minutes. It's just so cold my arthritis is making me hurt worse than normal. It's so weird that yesterday it was 79 degrees. But then the rain came and then the cold.

exactly the same kind of thing here. i mean yesterday it got pretty hot for a while. it was in the 80s not bad for this area. this morning it was 54 for a while, then 61 later. still cold to us.

I keep mine heat turned down a little lower than I would like because I cannot afford to pay the bill if it were turned up higher. I normally wear a sweater around the house and I tell my kids to wear a sweater or snuggle up with a blanket when they are watching television.

I'm actually happy with my new apartment. I don't even have to turn on the fan, all I have to do is open the doors in the balcony and in front. I'm at 4th and the air just flows through from the front to the back. The downside is when it rains hard the water goes in.

Hi bunnybon
Ah, it is nice that you share the wall of the oven/stove. If I was your son or daughter, and it was a financial crunch (or even if not) I would have shared your room!!! I see it as an opportunity where all the family can get together and share some great moments together. (I know when we kids grow up and move on with our lives, both - parents and we miss the times we shared together when we were growing up). So this opportunity would definitely make the holidays even better
For your question, dear, we dont have that severity of winters in this part of the country (I stay about 50 kilometers away from the sea and winter temperatures here have never gone that low for a room heater).

so you have the heat natural all the time of course. i had thought the kids might spend more time in here as they agree its nice. but since it so small, only my daughter spent some early hours here while i was asleep to be on my computer since hers is down. she really enjoyed the warmer room tho she said.
