In my family's Thanksgiving, I couldn't go vegan, but I'd go vegetarian! I usually skip over the turkey or eat just a slice to make it "thanksgiving". But the best part are the sides: cheesy potatoes mashed potatoes and gravy stuffing green bean casserole broccoli casserole dinner rolls pumpkin pie I don't know how to make a good Thanksgiving meal without cheese and other dairy products! I'm sure that you and your son will be a lot healthier though. Just make sure that you eat protein, calcium, and vitamins B12 and D. I know some vegans have issues with getting enough of these nutrients because instead of adding new foods to their diet, they just get rid of the animal sources.

I certainly couldn't go vegan, I do a lot of body building at the gym and need protein, since most if not all protein is animal related, sure there are alternatives, but give me a big plate of turkey, pork or fish any day, my muscles won't build on beans and lettuce leaves.

That's nonsense, beans, peas lentils and other vegetables all contain protein all the best, urban

Mmm yes that is definitely bad timing. Personally I wouldn't be too thrilled if someone sent me an email about a calf being slaughtered! Your son has good intentions but maybe he should sail his ship alone, I am sure he will have withdrawal symptoms when it comes to Thanksgiving and everyone is tucking into deliciously mouthwatering turkey! I tried going vegetarian once, until my partner started cooking bacon, now that is one smell that is enough to drive anyone to eat meat!

I don't eat beef or lamb, I don't like the taste of either, so it's a palatable preference rather than an animal one. Now pork I couldn't live without. I could eat it till the cows (ooops) come home. There's always a confusion about vegans and vegetarians. Vegans don't eat anything related to an animal like milk, eggs, cheese etc, these are strict vegans, whereas vegetarians will eat eggs, cheese, fish, milk.

im thinking bacon would get me also. its right up there with turkey smell on special days. so im not sure how far this will go but a few days without meat never hurt anyone i guess and son says he feels better and would like for me to. he really never cared for pork anyway. his weakness has always been beef. and no i will never give up my cheese so we are vegetarianm not vegan after all.

Interesting that it was bacon that got you! I was reading about vegetarianism before (when I was considering making the change) and there was an article about the smell of bacon being the downfall of many vegetarians! It seems like the kind of thing that if you do without for a while, it will be easier to cut down on in the future. I am more of a once a week meat eater. I don't cook it at home (except fish), but when I visit people or share meals with them, I don't refuse meat. I don't think bacon would do it for me, since I haven't eaten pork in 7 years...

Hi Sounds like a fair enough deal. I'm wondering why you would do such a thing after agreeing? Do you genuinely support your son trying to go vegan? Do you intend to make it up later... even in secret? I guess turkey is a big deal as a centre-piece for Thanksgiving, but there are alternatives. Did you know about Turfkey & other whole vegan turkey's? They're supposed to look & taste just like the real thing so omnivores can't pick the difference. I can't speak for all vegans, but for myself, I don't miss any part of a traditional diet or any centre-piece thereof. Most things like that have been successfully emulated from 100% plant ingredients for those who cannot do without. In the USA, they have a huge range of such goods, but I'm not sure about their availability where you are.

very sorry to say i had to go with the turkey today. i generally eat less meat then anything anyway but this is a very important tradition in my family. i didnt sneak. i told son i was doing it and also, i bought ALL the dinner and more to make up for it. so there. other then today, ive only had one bite of meat since i tried this. and i intend to try more going without meat. dont know where to find any of the vegan special meats stuff and likely i bet it costs a lot more?

No, no vegans here. I know that too much meat is no good for you. Especially beef. That is the worst. I eat mostly chicken and pork chops with vegetables. I like vegetables. But I also like meat. And of course fish. Remember this, too much of anything is no good for you.

Well, if its turkey you want then its turkey you will have. No one can make anyone else doing anything they don't want to. But I do understand his feelings on it also. You both can compromise on this.

I don't know anyone (well enough to have Thanksgiving with) who is vegan or even vegetarian. It just isn't Thanksgiving without turkey as far as I'm concerned. I love it and always buy one that's bigger than necessary so I will have lots of leftovers, so I'd be sneaking a piece of it, too!

yes im afraid that 65yrs of routine and tradition is getting to me. ive never been a big meat eater. always prefering to eat mostly the other dishes and ingrediets but still enjoy a little here and there at times. i should do a search to figure out the difference in vegan and vegetaruan. not sure of that. its confusing.

Hello bunny. What a challenge for your son to pay for groceries.. No meat for a while. There are a number of companies that make meat replacements. Morningstar farms Baco and lightlife produce meat substitutes. they are all pretty good. They even have a bacon. But you can make your own. There are recipes all over the net. Here is a list of good vegetarian foods. http://www.ehow.com/info_8776184_meat-substitutes.html You can also get vegetarin turkey. It is called tofurkey http://www.tofurky.com/ourstory/ingredients.html http://vegetarian.about.com/od/shoppingproducts/qt/buyingtofurky.htm If you can find a Seventh Day Adventist store You can find all kind of vegetarian foods. Better than a regular health food store. Good luck with your experiment.

I couldn't go vegan. I'm just too used to eating meat. I don't have red meat too often but I do like it every once in a while and I love my dairy products, cheeses and things. We don't do Thanksgiving here but roast turkey is my favourite thing. I have no idea how people can give up those foods and go vegan.

im not sure if the turkey will taste different but im definately going to try it. most meat has not tasted good to me before this. yesterday i tried a bite of my daughters pork chops she made. i used to love those. yet this tasted bad to me so im wondering if it does get to be a habit to eat meat.

Wow, if only someone would give me an offer like that, I'd jump on it...:) I don't know any personal vegans, but a few years ago my family and I went on a 40 day Daniel fast which consisted only fruits, vegetables, and whole grains. It was hard, what I missed most was cheese pizza, but it wasn't that bad. Ironically my husband who complained, (in a light manner) about not eating meat today said he wants to go back on it because he physically felt better and lost weight. Of course he says this after "filling" our freezer with a lot of meat... Seriously though, your son would have regretted it is he offered that to me, because I would do some serious shopping, (I know what vegan foods to get to help with my sweet tooth cravings) and would thoroughly enjoy myself. As for missing the meat? Not really. I use to be a big bacon and ham eater, and now when I see or smell pork, it makes me nauseous.

It took me years to give up the bacon, that was the hardest one, but trust me, after a while, now it smells bad. As for vitamins, I don't believe that for a second. Sure if you don't eat meat and the food you eat to get your protein is not organic, you will need vitamins and I am sure that since he is going "vegan" he knows to avoid fruits and veggies grown with pesticides. Unfortunately that is also where the high costs come in, because really when you think about it, the price of one serving of meat is more than one serving of veggies, unless the veggies are organic.

my son has never really liked to eat pork so he wont miss that. i on the other hand love bacon and ham and its hard to give that up. but funny thing is, he loved his steaks and beef and also his milk. so he may very well lose weight. i just hope he keeps up his vitamins cause i told him he may miss certain ones that give him strength

No way, I do not have any vegans in the family, but we do have friends like that. I couldn't do it, but what I do is a slight compromise, and I'm by myself. I try to eat no meat at least 4 times a week. These days I only have vegies, etc., and no meat involved. Then, the other 3 days I do have meat if I want to. I try not to go crazy with it as I'm really trying to cut down on my meat content because of cholesterol. I do eat fish quite a bit, as I just love it. If I could afford fish every day then I would eat it that much. Thanksgiving? Well, all I can say is, I already bought my Turkey and do plan on eating it, along with all the other goodies. I think it's just a matter of compromise within yourself. It's too bad that the both of you couldn't compromise and once in a while you could eat your meat too. Have fun and good luck! It IS healthier I must say, and hey, he's footing the bill!

I have had turkey for Thanksgiving for so long that I wouldn't know what to do if I didn't have it. My youngest daughter once decided to go vegan but it was fairly short lived. I know it is supposed to be better for you but it would be hard for me to go through the holidays without even a nibble.

I don't think that it would ever be possible for me to go vegan, although there are times that I think that it would be possible for me to go vegetarian. The Thanksgiving dinner wouldn't be an issue for me at all. The reason that I say that is because of the fact that I just don't like turkey. For Thanksgiving dinner I've been known to eat only the sides and never touch the meat because I tend to think that turkey is just too dry. However, you couldn't take meat and dairy products all away from me, I don't know if I would be able to survive.

yes i have played with the idea myself for many years because of hearing so many good things about it. but never had the courage to act on it even tho, i dont eat a lot of meat anyway. just certain things mean certain traditions at holidays like turkey. thanksgiving isnt the same without it.

Hi bunnybon We dont have thanksgiving here and also I dont think anyone here gets to eat a turkey as it isnt a bird found in India. My wife is a sort of vegetarian though she sometimes has fish. My late granny was a vegetarian in more stricter terms - she would not have even eggs or fish. But neither ever object or make it an issue when others on the dining table are having the chicken or mutton food. Though there are some whom I know, will make a fuss even at the sight of a non-vegetarian item.

This happened with me when I saw for the first time a chicken (or hen) being slaughtered by the butcher. I didnt feel eating chicken for days and if I was forced, I felt like puking it out... but then over time, things became alright. Maybe my parents were more rigid and they said - you should have everything which is served to you because that food comes from the Lord. He provides us with food and so you should NOT say NO to anything that comes to you. And then, mom did not cook anything else but chicken for the next few days and so I had no choice. I did feel bad that time, but today, I do realize and value the fact that whatever is served on the plates for dinner, is valuable and I should respect and be thankful that I could get some food. ps: I am not negging or denying the views of your son, instead I respect them, but I thougt I should share how we (me and my brother - he was on a special treat of brinjals/eggplants) grew up

No, I don't. We're not exactly farmers, but we're close enough to understand that many of these animals would not live if we weren't going to one day kill them & eat them ... Circle of Life! In fact, I wouldn't mind if I were eaten when I stopped living (of course, it would be better for everyone if I were cremated then and added to some gardening soil ... living forever as an added nutrient )

one way to look at it. except farmers dont kill the same way these slaughter houses or factories do. my dad killed for food and got it over with. and was kind to them when they was alive. thats how it should be for every living thing that has to die.

I have never been a vegan but I was a vegetarian for many years beginning when I was about 48. Now I'm a pescetarian. I stopped eating meat because at the time I was a member of PETA and I saw an undercover film that was absolutely horrifying. I won't say what it was about but it took place in a pig slaughterhouse and involved the most inhuman torture I have ever seen. I know animals get slaughtered but to torture them first is abominable. The slaughterhouse was closed by the government shortly after the film went public and an investigation was started. I have never eaten meat since then. And I was a great fan of pork, bacon in particular. I use to save the bacon grease and cook lots of different foods in it. So I didn't change my diet for health reasons. And vegans are very purist in their beliefs. A true vegan will not wear or use anything that comes from animals - leather, wool, etc. - as well as not eat any animal. So I will not be missing turkey as I do eat fish and fowl and dairy. But only if it's organic.

One of my best friends is vegan. He does miss turkey as well as many other meats. I'll catch him talking about how good certain meals smell. I even caught him once highly intoxicated eating a hot dog. He greatly regretted it in the morning. Your son is right in that they're plenty of other things to eat besides Turkey. They're also many meat substitutes that are very tasty. I will say though that if you have any guests over they'll be disappointed if they do not see a turkey on the table. I think that being vegan is a choice you need to make for yourself and not a lifestyle that you should switch to if you do not believe in it. I'd just make your son a special vegan meal and cook a turkey for everyone else.
