Guys, have you read in fb that educators coming from UP, La Salle and Ateneo will join force with the U.S. bloggers in the effort to take Senator Vicente Sotto III to task for allegedly plagiarizing his speeches.....
The educators and bloggers will file a complaint with the Senate Committee on Ethics and Privileges against Sotto for violating the Intellectual Property Code of the Philippines.
The violation, according to the Rules of the Senate Committee on Ethics and Privileges, is "improper conduct which may reflect upon the Senate."
I was even so dismayed upon seeing Robert F. Kennedy's speech being translated into Filipino by Tito Sotto and then delivered it as his own speech in the Senate! Wow...

I still could not understand why Tito Sotto will not just apologize and admit he made a mistake with copying the works of others without citing them. What if somebody abroad copied the concept of Eat Bulaga without asking and paying royalty, what will he feel about being victimized instead of being the one who benefits from other's hard work?
And to think he is now a senator, so he should know the consequences. Now the issue has grown and wont go away even though Sotto interprets this as bullying. He is a senator not a small, helpless kid who needs guidance, and he should start to act like one.

I am glad that even though in a slow manner, the filipinos are getting smarter on who to vote this election. well, they do have eat bulaga indonesia though. I feel ashamed of him. its good if he is not running, how ever, if he resigns, doesn't run and apologize it would save what's last of his pride. so sad he had to do this.

I think he just win in the election and became senator because of his everyday appearances in Eat Bulaga....so bad and so sad that some of us voted for him because of it...

This is really a shame. I also read on the news yesterday that Kennedy's daughter (or was it a son?) is demanding for a public apology from Sotto for using his father's speech and not giving credit to Kennedy. Im not quite sure what would Sotto say this time. He is really a sham!

Yes...with that issue being gone globally, I am already ashamed of having him as a Senator in our country.

Don't mess with the Kennedy 's. They are practically America's royal family or something.

Senator Sotto, really committed a big mistakes. Because he rely only on the note given by staff. He didn't ask those staff on what is the article about and never give credit to those writers but only on his behalf.
He might be innocent in that effect and the probity of any law of the land is lesser. Because he only committed mistake and acts in good faith that the said article is coming from his staff.
He believe with his staff because he know that some of them are lawyers. Those lawyers must be put in front to ease the burden of this senator.

Yes, you are right....his staff are not competent enough. He should fired them! Because what is being put in the limelight is his future as a public servant.

HE SHOULD HAVE RESIGN! He's actually making it worse! Im ashamed that he has to be a Letran Alumni, maybe he didn't really studied in that school rather play bully in some fraternity. Who ever voted for him should feel guilty for having him around the senate. Now, the worst part is that Kenedy's daughter has taken attention regarding this Senator.
like i said in the last discussion, it's hard for them to kill!

Oh, I never thought that he is a Letran alumni! My father even commented to the news last night that maybe he did it because of lacking of intelligence and has a minimal knowledge!

Much better if he will be kicked out of the Senate by means of voting. Majority wins. Oh he's from Letran? I never knew that but thanks for that info now I know hahaha. Maybe during his college days he always skip classes and went to his "Skul Bukol" taping while the class is going on.

I really think it's enough talk and discussion, but we really know now who to vote for in the next election

After all of these things and his being so hard headed I think that he won't be intending to run for another term anymore. He is just lucky that his term will not end this 2013 I believe since he just won last 2010 if I am not mistaken so his term would end when Pnoy would end his term in 2016. He still has some time to recover from all of this.

Unfortunately, I don't think his name is on the ballot. Or else, it's a no-brainier that he'll lose.

I don't think he will really recover in terms of political ambitions. Internet is like an historical archive. Also, the media has a good habit of reusing archives from their own stories. In terms of politics, he may be not be in the chamber anymore because even parties today use social media and we still have that brouhaha from the cyber crime law. But for everything else, he might do just fine. AS long as he doesn't make another speech.

Such a bad role model for Filipino youth. He admitted that he translated it in Filipino language, so that means he knew that it was copied and lifted from someone's creative work. too bad that he should set as a good example He is a senator for heaven's sake. simple apologies for the mistake and admit he's wrong somehow will show his sincerity that he didn't mean to own a creative mind work of others. Thumbs down to you senator.

It's too bad and too disappointing that the senator does not have a competent staff who knows how to write speeches and can research well...

I guess the senator is still very strong on his stand that there is nothing wrong with the speech he delivered and is even trying to hide behind the constitutional provision that he cannot be sued as he possesses an immunity from it.
I think these people are just asking for a simple apology for the mishap that the writer had done. I think if that was done a long time ago this would not blow up to this proportion.
The thing is that there is only Sen Santiago who is the one saying that Sen Sotto is wrong but other senators are quite mum about the issue. I think others are trying to avoid the issue at all and even Sen. Enrile is taking it easy and like it is backing up Sen. Sotto by saying that they are even copying laws from other countries like this thing is just a natural phenomenon happening in the senate.

Half of the senate will be open this coming elections. I think this is why many are shunning the issue already. Most are either busy planning their comeback or whoever they want to replace them if they have no intention of coming back.
Most senators would be silent on this as they do not want to create an atmosphere that they would be at odds with each other. So they are just waiting for Sen. Sotto to make his move on what to do with this since this is his doing and other would neither want their names attached to this infamous senator who is on fire.
I just hope that the senator would just give in so that the whole senate would not at all be drag into this bad publicity and not let the whole senate from tackling this issue as many are thinking of pushing the complaint to the ethics committee. It would just waste time just to deliberate whether there is a cause for the complaint and many speeches would again be delivered just for this issue.

Senators don't want to touch this because this will affect them, especially if they want to be elected.Nobody wants an unpopular colleague, no matter how useful his connection he is inside the chamber. If the public gets angry, they will have their say no matter what politics you pull inside the halls of Senate.

Here's the tip lady; "respond to topics related to your country" if you don't get it either research on the subject matter yourself! or don't respond at all.
I was putting on this topic starter's shoes and for some reason it can be humiliating to be asked to make it clear when the topic itself is as clear as the sky, if you know what I mean.
I wonder, is Indian politics been bored lately?

I really laugh out loud when he said that Plagiarizing is not a crime in the Philippines. Obviously he's bending our laws to the point of breaking the intellectual property law of America.

According to the news a senator is immune from any complaints or questions regarding whatever he says in the chamber. He is not liable for anything he says because he is protected by the Constitution hat provides him with immunity. Even if a compliant is filed against Sotto, it looks like this won't go far as he has found an ally in the Senate president himself. It seems that he has no plans whatsoever about apologizing and the only option we can do to stop this humiliation is not to re-elect him in Senate. This should serve all of us a lesson that we should choose our elected officials carefully to avoid future regrets.

I agree that if this is filed within the chamber, it won't be of no consequence. However, we do have that court of opinion, which includes social media and bloggers. Even if g he got away from actual punishment, people in the internetverse aren't gonna forget him completely after making their life almost near hell after teh cyber crime law provision. Technically, he got away but the public can still kick his bottom in many ways. That's why good about the internet and social media.

I hope those complaints will push through for it is really shameful being a copycat at that, for it is now being exposed on a global level. I'm looking, I hope, for a resolution through legal means for it may have negative effects rather than positive effects on his political career. I think, he needs to find new researchers, intelligent and tactful ones. Thanks

yes...I think the blame is not only on himself but to his staff as well....I remember when I was working in the Office of the Vice Governor, I have a colleague who was the one who write speech for the Vice Governor...so how much more that a Senator does not have? I guess, he should hire one because we know for a fact that his intellectual capacity is not on the same level with that of Senator Miriam Defensor-Santiago!

Cool, this would a progress in giving justice and fairly treatment with regards to the senators of our country and other people who plagiarize the works of others. Hope this certain move will turn out to be productive and to show our nation that justice really exists.

I've heard the news in the TV. i was also disappointed and disgusted. imagine being a senator and delivering a copied/translated speech.and his alibi was that, copying someones speech is a form of flattery.
instead of being convinced, i became more irritated against him. hahaha. first, he was the one behind the cybercrime law. i will not vote for him anymore.
