How would you know which field you are interested in?

For me it would be the illustration field but.. I'm not sure? Because my lecturer says I have no passion put into my work.
But even if I go to other fields it will probably be much worst because I have zero interest in other fields except illustration/art.
I don't know anymore.I mean if you like something would you do it every day and loose sleep over it and not do anything else except that(that means no games,no tv, no reading and etc because you have no time to do all that)Because my lecturer says if you're lazy then switch to other field.

Sometimes its best to keep all your options open, rather than choose one straight away, if one doesn't work out then you have others to fall back on. If you concentrate on just one field and spend all your time in it and it doesn't work you have nothing to fall back on, kinda like putting all your eggs in one basket. Try to be versatile.

I can't turn back and try other option because I stray to far into this illustration field already. If I switch fields then it would a waste of my mother's money. But still I am versatile, I mean during my free time i tend to try new things like teaching myself how to animate 2D graphics, make simple games and etc.
Yeah I am the type that likes to try new things, but I don't like it if you give me a massive work load on something that I like because it becomes work instead of a hobby. (Not that I wanted drawing and painting to be my hobby. I wanted an art career)

Hi trinityDownPour.
Your situation very much ressembles mine. Though my professors did not explicitly mention that I lack passion in what I study. But unfortunately I do not know where my passion lies. It is only those areas where I am not interested I can figure out. I think life is too short to check out all the possibilities, so it is better to take the safe route and try to make some time to pursue personal interests. Anyways have a nice day...

I don't where my passion lies either but all I know that I really really like illustrations. If you ask me to go into medical field, I swear I wouldn't last a month. It's even worst for me if I took accounting. (and I hate accounting) Same goes with engineering,IT and etc.

Hi trinitydownpour.
Well in that case the situation boils down to which job you hate the least. But if you really have resources of finance, then may be you can take a break and go on a big holiday or something to do soul searching...

trinitydownpour if you love illustration go for it as no your lecturer is full of prunes. an illustrator or artist can have a full life besides his a rt. in fa ct a good artist has to have a well rounded life to have ideas on what he or she wants to illustrate or paint.Illustrating can be a job and you go home from that job to do fun things in your time off.Your lecturer has given you the wrong picture and no you are not lazy just because you want a life after work. ou know what field you are interested because this is you and you are the one who has to take the courses and no one else.

"Your lecturer is full of prunes" (I laugh at this sentence)
Yes I do love illustration but with the massive workload I'm getting it makes me worried all the time that I might fail if I didn't finish it and also make me not want to do it. (But I always ended passing anyway despite worrying to much)
Sometimes it's also because of exhaustion that reduce the mood of wanting to draw or paint anything.

You should take a course that you see yourself being happy and enthusiastic about it even after 20 years. It should become your passion, otherwise, you will be just wasting your time, energy and money for a worthless course.

I am happy with the course that I'm in now. But try being passionate when you have multiple of assignments to complete and each one has only a few days(or even lesser days) to complete it and submit. And one of lecturer is known for always rejecting assignments so I have no idea what he wants even if I ask him, he won't give me straight answers. He will only ask me to do more, create more ideas.
And my other assignments have to purchase something for one time usage ( buy the frosted glass) and since I don't want to spend money on something that I use once then throw it aside. I would need to share it with others(and sometimes they are known to forget).
So basically I feel like a trapped slave.

hi trinity. i think you got a different notion about "interest". if you are interested in something, it does not mean that you devote all your time and attention to it. you could also be interested in more than one field.
and with regard to your teacher, no one knows what you like more than yourself. nobody's going to tell you that you are interested in one thing and not interested in another. you should know that yourself. if your teacher tells you otherwise, then don't mind him/her.
i say, pursue your interest in illustration and have fun doing it.

I like video games but does that mean I wanted to spend all my time and energy on it? No.. I would rather spend time doing something different all the time.
Yeah maybe I should just continue what I am interested in. And you're right that I am interested in more than one field.(Second field is ANIMATION) Since I can only choose one, I decided to choose the one that I am most interested in it.

oh yeah? you say you are interested in video games. and you are also interested in animation. but you said you need to choose only one. why?
can't you just bring your interest in animation over the development of video games? if you follow that path, you might even have a career in it.

Hi, Trinity
I'd guess your professor is trying to get you to think about your choices more; He/she is giving you a chance to decide how you really feel about your area, and choose how you respond to the challenges. You don't need to be manically obsessed with your specialization - no one would be very well-rounded if they were.
Take some time to decide how you feel about illustration, but also how you feel about life in general. Try to experience new things that'll inspire that passion to express them in your art - if you're not living life, what inspires you to create?
Anyway, don't tear yourself up trying to figure this out. Some things need to happen a little at a time... just try a new thing now and then - a new food, a performance, or heck, play dress-up. Feed your soul. Good luck with things :)

"You don't need to be manically obsessed with your specialization - no one would be very well-rounded if they were." (I agree with this)
But the funny thing about my illustration field is that it includes PHOTOGRAPHY and SURVEY SEA ART AND CULTURE (This one is something art history in Asia but I learned art history already in the first semester)
Not that I mind about that.
Inspire me to create? Well the thing that inspire me to create is looking at professional's artwork. But I'm not allowed to draw as I please unfortunately.

If you're interested at illustration/art then go for it. If your teacher said that you don't have any passion, then why not show that teacher that you really like it and you will devote yourself to it. However, playing games, reading, watching tv, etc. are our pastimes. No one can say that we're lazy by doing those things. When we get bored, it's better to do something else first. Check yourself if you are really interested in illustration/art. It will be your source of income in the future. Goodluck.

What the lecturer is doing is to encourage you put in more effort; perhaps the just realize there much in which can be accessed for your better performance.

Hi :)
If you feel happy in what you do then i guess that is where your passion lies. I may be wrong. I have interest in animation as well as softwares. But now i am also into literature writing poems

you should never let anybody dictates you in whatever field you wanted ot take. It should be your own choice. As you may regret following other's decision. You can try attending career orientation or interview people from different fields as you may gain interest with some of them. But if not, take illustration as it is what your heart desires.

I think it's nice to have other interests in case one doesn't work out, but I don't know about this teacher's expectations. You might want to show your work to some people in the field and ask them about your prospects.
I don't think you need to devote yourself solely to one interest though...

I am a computer science graduate, but I am a teacher. Teaching is the last profession I have in mind. Never have I thought when I was young that I will become a teacher by profession. They have this idea during my time that when you don't excel well in the class you will end up teaching. So, never in my life have I thought that I will end up as a teacher, computer science specifically programmer is very far end in teaching. But look at me now, where am I now, and who I am now. I have been teaching for 25years already and I still find the fire and passion on it. So in my mind i thought .. hmmm.. maybe I was born a teacher.
