Is It a Requirement?

What I really would like to do one day is be able to afford to put myself through school to be a make up artist. Everyone that see's the make up I have done always compliments me on it. I know my family would probably laugh at me for wanting to do this but I would really enjoy that... My thing is, aren't make up artists all really pretty? All of the ones I have seen are so beautiful. Is that a requirement for that kind of job?

whether being pretty is a requirement or not you will have no problem with that you are beautiful and who cares what your family thinks because if doing make-up makes you happy thats the only thing that matters. they should stand by your side and encourage you to do what you like to do no matter what it is.

Thank you! I know I should not care what they think or say but that is sometimes hard to do... In an ideal world families should support each other but that is not the case with this one, Lol. You know it too!
12 Nov 12
yes that is the case but they have to learn to be more supportive whether they like it or not

NO, that's definitely not a requirement. A lot of times, they look so beautiful because they're artists with makeup and cover themselves up and look completely different. That's the beauty of makeup...you can make it look natural to compliment your beauty or you can go crazy and cake it on and make yourself look amazing, but nothing like how you look in person. If you want to do makeup, maybe go to school for hair and makeup. The more you're able to do, the more opportunities you'll be able to have.

That is a good point. They only look so good because of the make up. Lol. So maybe I can do it after all... I like the natural look better but I can do either one on other people. That is what I want to do is go to school for it. Maybe one day I will be able to afford it.

Do you think? The ones I have seen are ordinary working people and they don't even wear make-up. A make-up artist works behind the scenes and so it's not necessary for them to be "beautiful". They just need to be really good at bringing out the best in others. I think the course would be a long and involved one as you would need to know about various skin types and the various properties of the make-up you are using Look at a lot of top movie stars. They are ordinary looking at best but with the right make-up, the right lighting and the right camera angles, they become stunning. The cameras don't just point and shoot you know, photography is extremely technical Besides, you are beautiful in your own way.

So do you know all the tricks to alter someone's appearance. I mean with shading and highlights? Can you cover blemishes and scars etc.? I would love to be able to do that. I have a really high brow line and people ask me why I'm looking so surprised when they see a photo of me. I know it's silly but it embarrasses me (one of the many things) and the more I try and disguise it the worse I look.

The other thing I thought of...for me, seeing a woman all done up looks cheap and fake. I think the modern way is to have make up on but for it not to so obvious. A naturally beautiful woman is stunning and rare. A woman who is wearing make-up that brings out her best features without obviously wearing make-up, to me is a joy to behold. I think the right hairstyles also play an important role in helping a woman look fine.

I have seen them in salons so I guess that might be why they are all done up, to get plenty of business... I can definitely make other people look good. I have done make up on a lot of people and they have looked really nice. That is true, without make up and such movie stars are average looking people! I have been shocked by some of them truly...

It is me in my avatar. Thank you Hatley. I am glad not all of them are pretty or expected to be. I think I am okay but some of the make up artists I have seen are gorgeous! Perfect teeth and everything which I don't have... =( I hope I can prove them wrong thinking I am just a failure. I would love to be able to do this as I want to badly. I have always loved doing make up on everyone and I am good at it from what people have told me. Girls when I was in high school used to ask me to do their make up all the time! That is when I realized I must be good at it for the popular girls to ask me to have their make up done by me. Lol.

Heaven's no! And who is to say you aren't. It is all in self esteem and such as that. I wonder if you did some jobs around you could make some extra money doing make-up and that might help pay your way to school. And not all schools are that expensive. Probably would be costly to get your make-up, boods, etc.

I think to be physically beautiful is not the requisite to be a make up artist. It's your passion to do it is the requisite. If you have the passion you can make an ugly face into a beautiful one for your passion will reflect your output. There are people who are working in a saloon but if you will look at their hairstyle you can think as if they aren't working in there yet, the people they are serving have the best hair ever., So being beautiful is not a requirement to become a make up artist but the passion of doing it.

Yeah I have just seen a lot of them and they are really pretty! I definitely have the passion for it, I have since High School. Back then I was put down for everything I thought of though so I never told anyone or did anything about it... Now I really want to do it and I don't care too much who likes it or not. Lol.

That's indeed good! Yah,sometimes in life there are really people who will like your work and who will not. Whatever their reaction is, always remember that how you react and deal with it is the most important thing. Go for it and keep it up!

I suppose this would really depend on the clientele. The job of a make up artist is to improve the appearance of someone else, so the overall appearance of the make up artist should not be relevant. In the case of a make up artist working for a studio etcetera, it would not matter if the person was genuinely ugly because the ability is the only factor that matters. Sadly, if the job was in a salon dealing with the general public, then too many members of the public are foolish enough to think differently.
• Valdosta, Georgia

Right but I would not go to a hair dresser who has TERRIBLE hair, you know? Lol. I would be scared they would make me look like that! Lol. Yeah your right, in a salon sometimes people are a little more stuck up and they would care about what I look like...

It probably isn't a requirement but I guess being presentable and pretty attracts more customers or makes their customer more confident. I think nobody wants a disturbing or unpleasant make-up artist, right?

I don't think that would be a problem and if it bothers you personally, you could perhaps have it fixed or something. It can boost your self-confidence. I think that if you are good in something and you can find a way to make a decent living out of it, then you should go for it. Maybe you can use a part of your earnings there for your dental.

Well yeah you should look presentable in any job you take on in my opinion... My make up would look good but like I have said before I don't have good teeth so I didn't know if that would affect my success in that business...

No, I don't think that being a very attractive person is a requirement at all to be a makeup artists. However, I do think that a successful makeup artist should always present themselves well. For example, I don't really think that a makeup artist that doesn't wear makeup herself would really be a successful makeup artist. I've seen some that are very pretty, but then again I've seen other makeup artists that are just pretty plain looking. Don't be discouraged because of something this trivial.

Yes presentation is a requirement for this kind of work. Your absolutely right, I don't have to worry there because when I leave my house my make up goes on, at least a little. I don't think I am ugly or anything, I just know that I am not gorgeous either.

It sounds to me like a very sensible choice of work, people always want help with make up, and there's no way that it can be done online, so its the sort of training, once you get it, that will always be useful. I can't see why your family should laugh at this idea, if they would they are wrong. I have read in a lot of places that how we feel about ourselves affects how we look, a lot of those make up artists you see are probably very confident about how they look, and that's what makes them look so attractive. Is there anyway you could just start by selling make up, and then move on to getting some training?
• Valdosta, Georgia
18 Nov 12
Yeah I have always been good at it and always to do it professionally. Hopefully I can do it. They probably are very confident. I am not as confident but I know I can do make up well. I don't know if I could just sell make up, not sure how to get involved with that...

I guess it's not a requirement but it's just a more appropriate if you put make up. In order for you to convince others that you're a good make up artist so that they will be encouraged :)

First of all, you are pretty. Secondly, I don't think so. While you're right a lot of them are really good looking, I'm thinking about some of the shows I've seen. Like Project Runway where they actually show the interaction with the makeup artists. Or there was one on cable where a guy needed a makeup job for a bit he was doing. And that woman was not pretty. She wasn't ugly, but she wasn't pretty. Definitely, they aren't all good looking. But they know what to do with what they have.
• Valdosta, Georgia

Thank you Ambiepam. =) Yeah, I am hoping as long as I can do make up well that I will be able to do it even though I am not gorgeous or anything...

I do not think that being beautiful is a requirement for being a make up artist at all. But putting make up on can make so many more people including myself look so much better. I would love to be a makeup artist as well. I used to do my friends makeup all the time when I was in high school.
• Valdosta, Georgia

Well that's good for me! Lol. Yes make up can enhance beauty. I used to do everyone's make up in High School too. I knew I was good at it when the popular girls wanted me to do their make up, Lol. I still have people compliment me all the time on my own make up. I would love to do it.

LMB, no, that is not a requirement, but good rapport and social skills would be a plus. My daughter is a make-up artist for Mac cosmetics, and yes, I think she's very pretty, haha, but I have met many of her friends who are just average friendly people but add make-up to them, and it makes a world of difference. Don't forget, small eyes can be made to seem larger, chubby faces can be made to look thinner, and thin lips can be made to look bigger. This is what most do to enhance their looks,...add a great personality, and you're all set. I think you're very pretty and would have no trouble at all doing this, as far as looks go. You seem to be very personable too from what I gather here at myLot. And to let you know, my daughter did not go to any school when she started out...she just had an interest in it, and she started at May Company with Lancomb, then moved on to Mac, which she absolutely loves. Don't worry about your family laughing at you, they won't for long. Especially when they see what kind of pay you'll get....then we'll see who laughs last.

Yeah, social skills is a must! =) That is awesome that she works for mac, that is a good company to work for. Thank you kashmeresmycat! I have just seen many make up artists that are so beautiful that I wasn't sure if no one would come to me because I am not model pretty. Wow, no school either? She must be amazing at what she does! Yeah once I am getting paid the laughs will be at them! LOL. Not really I wouldn't be that way but you know what I mean. =) Thank you SO much for your response!

Hi Loving! Not everyone who is a makeup artist is a beauty by everyone's standards of what beauty is. I've seen some makeup artists on TV shows where they compete to get contracts. Some are men and some are women. I wouldn't think you would be hired for what you look like. You would be hired for what you can do to make others beautiful.
• Valdosta, Georgia
15 Nov 12
That's true. The ones I have seen I thought they were really beautiful. I don't think I am at that standard looks wise. So, I wasn't sure if people would come to an okay looking make up artist... Yeah, I am good at make up from what others tell me...

I would tell your family where to shove it. If you want to do it then go for it. I know schools costs a lot (I went 4 years, and currently going for another program), I do course by course part time (so I can still work). I would call the school, and look into it more, many will take course by course, part time you have x long to complete it my other course was 5 years part time online so it helped finacncially. I dont think it's a requirement I look at the job they do and good work not what they look like. We all look different and I;m sure not everyone thinks we all are pretty, but many who say this and judge this way hate themselves and trying to make themselves feel better.
• Valdosta, Georgia
15 Nov 12
Thank you 911Ricki! =) I should tell them where to go... Schools are a lot. I would have to look into some options to see if I can even go. Yeah I have seen most of the time and they are gorgeous! Maybe its just the make up though...Lol.

its kinda i think a requirement because how can someone trust that you can make them beautiful if you can`t present your self the way you want to be.. I`m not telling that you have to be beautiful as the beauty queens are but at least make your self presentable for them to trust you...^_^
