Petitions for each state's secession

United States
November 12, 2012 7:16pm CST
Petitions for various states are listed on-line for those who are unhappy with the election results to secede from the United States. A lot of the southern states are shown with the highest numbers of signatures. Do you think this is a legitimate site and do you think that states will actually secede over this election?

To secede the states need the Federal Governments permission, which they won't get. However it does show the frustration between those receiving the money and those paying the money. If you look at some of the states you have to wonder what is happening, New York is one of the states with a large number of signatures. To me a former upstate resident it shows the growing frustration with the state having to bail out the failing large cities. In NYC you used to ride the Staten Island Ferry for $0.05 now it is free paid for by the gas tax raised upstate where the people have to drive because of no mass transit. I remember a discussion in High School about increasing the parking fee to help cover the cost of the city bus system. In Wisconsin a couple of years ago there was a news article that the highest paid government employee was a bus driver in the city of Madison. He was making more than the Governor and two to three times what other public employees were making. For the longest time NYC residents could attend college for free - well paid for by the tax payers while the rest of the state had to pay much higher taxes. I think the feeling of the people is we want a smaller government and let us decide how to spend our money. Right now if you look at a precinct voting map you see the Democrats have the big city vote but not the rural vote. In California they just passed an increase tax on the people to solve the budget crisis. With nearly half of the people paying no income tax it is an easy vote because they get the benefits and non of the pain. If the government wants to tax dividends more then lets tax welfare benefits, after all they tax Social Security if you saved for retirement and have a separate pension. Lets have everyone have skin in the game as the President said when referring to millionaires and billionaires (then proposes to tax more those making $250,000 or more the man does not understand place value in numbers.) We are becoming a population of lets take from those who have it so we don't have to work. I say let them do something to earn the money.

But at least the teachers will have their 100%medical and pension...while the rest of us...that are paying for the teachers to have theirs...have neither!

I think this is hilarious on one hand and very scary on the other. On one hand I want to believe that it cannot ever happen - and yet we could actually see another civil war because of the crazy way our political system has become. I do believe the site to be legitimate - but not necessarily recognized by the government. However, from my understanding, if a petition gets 25,000 signatures the government has to issue a response.I do not think any one will actually secede though.

I hope that we are not so far removed from the Civil War that we have to repeat that history lesson. I guess we'll find out it any of those states garner enough signatures within the time frame allowed to put secession to a vote of the people.

I just read about that...Texas has 23,000! Leave it to Texas..they are "remember(ing) the ALamo! I say good for them! Why not try..seems the government isn't caring much about hte states. I have to wonder tho...if many of these same states just recently voted Obama reelected...why do they want to secede? Why didn't they just vote for Romney and get rid of the current trouble maker? Something just isn't right in this election status...it just happened so fast - the election counting etc, and now this. If the country was so happy with Obama that they voted him back in...why are they wanting to secede from this same government?

Actually, Texas voters chose Romney..it just wasn't enough! I really think our nation is very divided on this issue and do think we are in for some tumultuous years ahead as we become even more restless.(Go Texas!)

There's not really any existing legal mechanism for a state to secede so the petitions aren't likely to lead anywhere. However, that just goes to show that the petitions are illustrating a very real political problem: right now, there's no way to secede from the United States even if the people of a state want it. That's kind of strange considering I've heard plenty of American politicians speak in favor of the right of self-determination. Practically speaking, I think it's extremely unlikely any state would vote to secede even if given the opportunity, but shouldn't people have the right to choose their own fate at the end of the day?

From reading over the posts, it seems that a lot of people in many states are frustrated and feel somewhat powerless over the election and the changes that are sure to come. I know from being in Texas that the state has a very healthy economy and I wouldn't think they would have any problem refusing federal dollars. I am not sure how much the federal government gives to support Texas, but I don't see the Federal government being able to continue the doling out money that isn't there. Maybe the petitions will cause someone at the top level of government to review the homeland policies and try to address the issues that are causing so many people to want to secede from their leadership.

Is it a legitimate site? They're posted on the White House website. Wait, no, the White House website is not a legitimate site, it's an Obama propaganda site. I doubt there will be any secession of states. This is a statement, this is to tell the President that these people are very unhappy with the state of the Union. These petitions require a certain number of signatures to get a response from the White House. I think this is a legitimate way of telling the President just how unhappy these states are with his governance and his policies.

I can assure you that I am very skeptical about anything that I read or hear because unless I have my own experience I will doubt the authenticity. I know from personal experience that what is printed in the newpaper and announced on the news is sensationalized and only has a small basis in fact. I think this election was as polarizing for the nation as the one in which former president Bush was elected and weeks and weeks were spent in recounting ballots. It will be interesting to follow to see where the story leads.

I'm guessing that the Dallas News is a legitimate news organization! Wonder if more states will follow the lead. Governor Perry was somewhat controversial in Texas, but one can hardly argue about the success of his administration. Looks like Texas has remained very healthy economically when compared to another state like California.

Wow I did not know this but I am going to have to check it out. It is a scary thought but it is also refreshing. To me it says that the citizens of these states are tired of letting the government dictate to them and not listen to the wants of the people! After a search I find that my state is one of the ones filing petitions. I think I will go sign it!

Yes I saw that Texas had like 26,000 signatures when I read the article. Wow is all I can say. NC has over 25,000 as well. It did not take long.

I live in Oklahoma and work in Texas and both states are listed as having signers of these petitions. It is interesting that I hear nothing on any of the local news about this movement, and then in this discussion a reader has seen the story written by the Dallas News. I'm gonna keep following it for a while, for sure.

This happens after every election, and we haven't had one secede yet.

I did notice after starting the discussion that the 2004 and 2008 post election periods had the same petitions. I was unaware that the site or the petitions were started. Interesting how knowledge has increased with the development of the internet.

While these petitions are not binding on the states listed, they do indicate a large amount of folks are not happy. And just because they are not legally binding, doesn't mean folks won't act to accomlish seccession by other means. People will become even angrier when prices go up, jobs are lost and rights taken from them. I've been accused of all sorts of things for conveying this grim message. I really don't care what the Obama supporters say anymore. My advice is to stock up and dig in. Times are going to get rough. http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=ILJDudUpct0&feature=youtu.be

I would never speak against a leader of our nation. I would only pray for that person because I can assure you that I could not do a better job. However, the statistics do speak about the past four years and we have not heard those facts on any of the local or national media. The past four years of Obama's administration saw a marked rise is gasoline prices; a notable increase in food stamp recipients; and a plunge of more citizens into poverty. More jobs were lost than added and the outsourcing was not halted. As we move toward a one world system, I believe we will continue to see our nation lose a lot of the economic blessing, the freedoms, and the character of individuals that made up a once great nation. The lack of full disclosure by our government officials and the hidden agendas that are now common behind the scenes practices has cloaked our nation in deception and lies. I hope that our nation does not fracture again by seccession of states, but I don't see how the entitlements can continue to be funded to prevent that chasm between the haves and have nots from widening.
